Boring question about hanging washing out

When do you do it?

Some days I'm up at 6am and we have bright sunshine but I'm not sure if I will look ridiculous hanging washing out so early!

Today the sky is white cloud, not a bit of sunshine. Would you hang washing out?

I know the rules about not leaving it to get darked on, and the spider willies, but no one has actually told me when the right time to hang it is!

I was a serial tumble dryer user prior to this year when for various reasons, but now I'm able to hang washing I want to get it right Blush

I’d never use the machine on timer while we’re asleep or out because of the fire risk but if I haven’t done a load in the evening I will put it in the machine then switch it onto the hour cycle as soon as I get up so it is ready to peg out before I need to leave for work. There’s something really nice about being out in the garden very early in the day doing something useful, although my hands get frozen if the temperature is very low. I get why you felt the need to ask by the way.

We hang out whenever it has the best chance of drying. If that's overnight, then that's when it goes out. Wind is more important than sun, hence it drying overnight in the dark!

We keep an eye on the forecast, both for it being dry, and the wind speed. I've no idea how this became my life! 🤣🤣

motogirl · 03/06/2022 10:32

I put it out when I get up (I wash in the evening) on work days around 7.30am, non work days whenever... I put it up at 11pm last night as I predicted a lie in

cottagegardenflower · 03/06/2022 10:38

As early as possible if it's dry. Look at the weather forecast if you intend to go out.

LunaLoveFood · 03/06/2022 10:42

I hang it out and soon as the washing machine stops.
I even put a load on when I finish work and pop it on the line about 7pm in the summer. It's usually dry by the time I get up so I can bring it in and put another load out.

cobden28 · 03/06/2022 10:46

I have to let my two small dogs out into the garden first thing for toiletting, and if I'm thinking of hanging any washing out I always look to see if anyone lse has got any washing out.

Today is a glorious sunny day and a few of my neighbours have got loaded washing lines, so I've hung my weeks' washing out as well. Got to hang the washing out as early as possible in order to get the maximum drying benefit from the glorious weather.

Fire risk? LOL.

Fire risk? LOL.

You'd be surprised. It's my line of work and whilst I know I see a far higher amount than the average person, I'm reticent to put the machine or dishwasher on while we're out or asleep.

SirChenjins · 03/06/2022 11:22

Why is it more dangerous to leave the washing machine on compared to the fridge or any other household gadget?

HaveringWavering · 03/06/2022 11:25

I’m really curious to know what it is about hanging out washing in the early morning that could be considered to be “ridiculous”?

Hanging out washing in the rain- ridiculous.
Hanging out washing in the snow - ridiculous

These are literally the only 2 washing-based scenarios I can think of as ridiculous.

if my neighbour had their washing out at 6am I’d be full of admiration. You worry far too much about what your neighbours think.

Isn't that the number one cause of house fires or have I just made that up? I'm sure the fire service advise never to leave appliances on when you're out. I certainly wouldn't after seeing a dishwasher spectacularly stop working and black smoke started bellowing out of it, very grateful I wasn't out when that happened.

You’re misunderstanding how statistics work. Of course you will see more in your line of work, because it’s your line of work.

As it happens, my line of work is plane crashes and other aviation accidents. I’m not afraid to fly as a result.

Washing machines have timers precisely because they are designed to be put on overnight and be ready for you when you wake up. You really think that U.K./EU safety regulations would allow this if it was a fire risk?

You’ve made it up about being the number one cause. Not even close.

I have explained this is probably due to me being unsure of myself in many situations for to being autistic.

Hopefully this thread has given you the reassurance you need then.

Mrsjayy · 03/06/2022 19:57

Might need this 😃

Tightropetenacity · 03/06/2022 23:35

I don’t envy your electricity bills

I only use the dryer. Bills the same if I use it or not thanks to solar. But I'd pay for the convenience.

Perhaps this is one of those threads you should just scroll past then? I did say I have o lot recently been able to hang it out. It's not tedious to me, I enjoy having the washing out. I was simply looking for advice because despite being in my 40s this is new to me. Next time you want to post a smug 'I'm better than you' post, have a think about it's impact. I don't really care but I can see how many people would.

I reckon you've taken that post way to seriously, your reply is way out of proportion and unbalanced. I don't hang out I'd mention that in a light-hearted way. Hardly "better than you" or *smug", it's pure laziness and lack of time. If you take that kind of offence at innocent comments that seems to be a you problem and maybe don't post on a public forum if it's too hard to read replies differing from your ideal....

Tightropetenacity · 03/06/2022 23:36

to being autistic.

Explains a lot. I don't think posting on public forums where people can post their opinion on what you post is for you.

Have a great day/night.

@Tightropetenacity

Away you go. It's been a good thread, it's not 'too hard' for me Hmm
