Boring question about hanging washing out

jubileetrain · 03/06/2022 08:14

When do you do it?

Some days I'm up at 6am and we have bright sunshine but I'm not sure if I will look ridiculous hanging washing out so early!

Today the sky is white cloud, not a bit of sunshine. Would you hang washing out?

I know the rules about not leaving it to get darked on, and the spider willies, but no one has actually told me when the right time to hang it is!

I was a serial tumble dryer user prior to this year when for various reasons, but now I'm able to hang washing I want to get it right Blush

I often wake up early and stick on a washing while I make a cup of tea then go back to bed for a while. Then by about 7.30 am I am hanging it out. I like to get mine out early.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 03/06/2022 08:27

I don't get the eco settings which take twice as long as regular. What does it do??

TheGetaway · 03/06/2022 08:29

dementedpixie · 03/06/2022 08:24

I put mine on a timer so it starts by itself in the morning

I always use a timer too.

The best feature ever on my washing machine! It allows me to get 2 loads out before I leave for work

TheGetaway · 03/06/2022 08:31

I’m a rebel and also leave or even hang it out overnight. Can’t see any reason why not

Sits around a fair bit. Short cycles have more spinning / agitation to get the clothes clean. Eco cycles let the washing soak in the soapy water more to use that as a way of cleaning the washing.

Look ridiculous hanging washing out early? Is this really something that needs to be considered?Confused

I genuinely didn't know, none of my neighbours do it that early so I guess I was just going on the examples I have, just wondering if there was a reason for them waiting until a bit later.

@MagnoliatheMagnificent

It uses less electricity because it relies more on soaking & less on agitation.

jubileetrain · 03/06/2022 08:33

Thank you everyone, I shall go and peg it out now and hope the sun breaks through!

For the people wondering why I was concerned about looking ridiculous it is because I am autistic and a bit unsure of myself sometimes. I'm very aware of people 'seeing' me do things and don't want to do it wrong, I guess it stems from masking.

I leave for work at 5.15am and will sometimes hang the washing out before I go.

Billandben444 · 03/06/2022 08:37

If the ground is wet then washing won't dry until the ground does first - presume it's to do with humidity. When I had a garden I never left washing pegged out overnight as I imagined birds and rats and spiders (and werewolves?) running along the line with their muddy paws/claw. Had a vivid imagination in those days.

LucyLeaseExtension · 03/06/2022 08:37

@jubileetrain

i love hanging mine out early, i love washing, it makes you feel like you've done something, yet it takes very little time/energy. Absolutely no reason not to get it out there as early as possible.

LucyLeaseExtension · 03/06/2022 08:39

...and yes, it goes out unless it's actually raining (properly, not just spitting) it's just an extra rinse (except when I lived in London) if you're in the U.K. it should be nice everywhere today.

ComDummings · 03/06/2022 08:41

As early as possible is good.
I must look a bit weird sometimes, if I have a lot of washing to do I’ll even hang it out at 6pm on warmer days, I feel like even an hour hanging out will reduce the time in the tumble dryer so might as well do it even at that time 😂

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/06/2022 08:43

If it's dry ,hang it out. I often hang out before I go to bed in the summer and its dry by 10am and then I can get another load on. Give everything a good shake before you peg it out and hang up tops and shirts on hangers to reduce ironing.

Who will be watching you and thinking you're ridiculous at 6am? 😂 Just peg it out!

hepaticanobilis · 03/06/2022 08:21

Missing the point but how early do you all get up to put the washing on if it's ready to hang by 6am? All the washing cycles my machine has take over an hour to complete, some as long as 3 hours (apart from the 15 min quick wash).

Delayed start cycle. Only works for darks for me as I need to stain treat light wash as my children seem to think they live in a Daz advert.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 03/06/2022 08:44

Just hang your washing out. If people are up that early and can be arsed to judge you then they are the weird ones.

Minniem2020 · 03/06/2022 08:46

Mine is often out by 6/7 am, I set the machine timer the night before to come on around 5am. It's a habit I started so it would be washed and hung out before I left for work. I wfh now so don't really need to it but the habit stuck and it works for me.

LowlandLucky · 03/06/2022 08:49

More to the point, why do you care what your neighbours think about the time you hang your washing out ?

It's chucking it down here. Apparently nice this afternoon, however. Time will tell, given this afternoon's forecast is the polar opposite of what we have right now.

I have actually said about this

I’ve hung laundry at 6am when I get up (I use the timer function on my washer to finish at 6, a brilliant function).

If I’m feeling particularly slovenly, I will pop out a load in the evening (I’m spider willy immune) & let it dangle in the breeze until after work the next day.

I rather like the thought my jumbo knickers wafting in the breeze, heralding the sunrise.

mrsfoof · 03/06/2022 08:53

At this time of year, I often do a load after the kids have gone to bed and leave it out to be darked on Smile. Sometimes, it's dry enough to bring in at 8:30am before we go to work / school.
Either way, I can get another load done first thing before we go out, if needed.

newnamethanks · 03/06/2022 08:55

Scots granny, now long gone, had Rules about this. It has to be hung on the line in a particular order, small to large. I found this out when she spotted my disordered washing disgracing the household and toddled into the garden to show me how to peg it up correctly. It was important to her as 'the neighbours would see it'. So watch it OP, who knows who's looking at it?😀

Some days I'm up at 6am and we have bright sunshine but I'm not sure if I will look ridiculous hanging washing out so early!

If I was up and out at that time (which I’m not) I would just be impressed that you had already done a wash by then. Surely not that many would see you.

Of course you can leave it overnight as I often have. Out for a week has been my record.

Greatoutdoors · 03/06/2022 09:02

If the ground is dry, your washing will dry
