Boring question about hanging washing out

jubileetrain · 03/06/2022 08:14

When do you do it?

Some days I'm up at 6am and we have bright sunshine but I'm not sure if I will look ridiculous hanging washing out so early!

Today the sky is white cloud, not a bit of sunshine. Would you hang washing out?

I know the rules about not leaving it to get darked on, and the spider willies, but no one has actually told me when the right time to hang it is!

I was a serial tumble dryer user prior to this year when for various reasons, but now I'm able to hang washing I want to get it right Blush

Never.
Out of the machine into the dryer here. No one's got time for tedious pegging.

mumda · 03/06/2022 09:15

My neighbour hangs lots of washing out. He starts washing at 5am and the washer going into spin cycle wakes me up. It's a full line by 6 and then another load or two. Make the most of good drying days.

DonorConceivedMe · 03/06/2022 09:15

I don’t envy your electricity bills @PuffedJoy

Threetulips · 03/06/2022 09:16

I always hang it out early - even on days off so I get another load done.

i have even hung washing out late at night and it stays out - so an extra shake if I think there might have been spiders about!

If it’s dry outside hang it out . Don’t overthink it!

Very much this!
Gosh I've never even considered this before and I've been putting washing out for 25 years! Grin

glamourousindierockandroll · 03/06/2022 09:20

I always feel extremely smug hanging washing out at 6am. Go for it, OP. Your neighbours will think you a domestic goddess.

FfeminyddCymraeg · 03/06/2022 09:20

Serial washer over here - I peg out day and night, whenever it’s needed. Like a few others, I often do it the night before if the forecast is dry but I’m not planning on getting up early the following day.

SirChenjins · 03/06/2022 09:24

Whenever I can - which includes the night before. I leave for work at 7am so often don’t have time in the morning. We’re still standing and no harm has come to us.

Perhaps this is one of those threads you should just scroll past then? I did say I have o lot recently been able to hang it out. It's not tedious to me, I enjoy having the washing out. I was simply looking for advice because despite being in my 40s this is new to me. Next time you want to post a smug 'I'm better than you' post, have a think about it's impact. I don't really care but I can see how many people would.

Thanks again for all the replies. I think the idea of 'if the ground is dry the washing will dry' is something I will definitely think about. It makes sense

I always thought it was the sun that dried the washing but it isn't,now I peg out all the time ,just occasionally I bung it in the drier to finish it off but mostly it's dry.

Missing the point but how early do you all get up to put the washing on if it's ready to hang by 6am? All the washing cycles my machine has take over an hour to complete, some as long as 3 hours (apart from the 15 min quick wash).

Wash it overnight then hang out when you get up

Mrsjayy · 03/06/2022 09:30

I feel lazy most days my neighbours have their washing out by 7 they are pensioners so I think thats always been their routine, mine out by 9 usually. Op put your washing out when you want.

megletthesecond · 03/06/2022 09:31

Leave it overnight and in light rain if it's not needed straight away. It'll dry even on cold winters day.

RewildingAmbridge · 03/06/2022 09:32

I do have washing rules but not about time, if it's dry it goes out, I've been known to hang stuff out when it's already dark (the horror!). I do hang out my things and DHs things separately so start with mine then go on to his or vice versa, and order things so all trousers, all tops, dresses and anything that needs hanging then socks etc DH thought I was mad until he tried it, realised you can fold as you take it off the line and put it straight away without the additional chore of sorting. No need to sort before hanging as you just take things from the basket in the order you want to hang them.
DSs gets done separately as he has sensitive skin and can only use a particular unscented detergent and I prefer fragrance for mine

I saw this on MN a few years ago and it’s been one of my best life lessons!

I don't get the eco settings which take twice as long as regular. What does it do??

It soaks rather than agitates. Soaking takes hours. That's why the cycle takes so long but uses far less electricity

PurBal · 03/06/2022 08:19

Oh yes. The washing machine timer is my favourite thing so it’s ready to go out at the crack
of dawn. And I always feel a bit of pride putting it out early. Like I’ve got the hang of this adulting and parenting lark. On sunny days I also get annoyed if I don’t have any laundry to do, seems like a waste of a nice day 😂

Did I write this comment? Grin

If the ground is dry, your washing will dry

There is an app called -hanging washing?- that tells you how long it is likely to take to dry in your location.
I often hang mine out very early and also go with the ‘if the ground is dry ‘ thing

drying washing outdoors gives me much joy 😊

PostMenPatWithACat · 03/06/2022 09:47

If there's enough blue sky to make a pair of sailor's trousers it will dry.

Calmdown14 · 03/06/2022 09:50

Of course you can. But then I sometimes deliberately peg overnight and will hang up in drizzle.

It's amazing how quickly it dries on a bright morning. You can have another load out by 9

Threetulips · 03/06/2022 09:51

There’s an app? Whatever next!

rumred · 03/06/2022 09:59

If the forecast is good i hang it out the night before. I give no shits about my neighbours washing. I love line dried stuff. Smells so good

Use the delay start timer?

I set mine so the machine starts at 5ish and it's ready to hang out by 7.

In typical bank holiday fashion it's raining where I am and I've had to put the dryer on Sad

Mrsjayy · 03/06/2022 10:00

An app! Who woulda thought 😀
