"Nobody, not one person, has said that if they feel fine they'll drive regardless. They've said that if they're not over the limit and they feel fine they'll drive.

OP will be fine to drive legally, she's said even with that being the case she wouldn't drive if she felt even slightly fuzzy."

The problem with that is you don't know when you are under the limit. Its an assumption. And can be a very dangerous one at that.

If you plan a heavy session, then also plan not to drive for the next day. That's the only way to be sure you don't drive while over the limit.

I'm in Scotland and the limit is lower here, which I think is a good thing. Drink driving ruins lives.

You do know that if you've had six pints over six hours and stopped drinking at 7pm, you'll be fine by 11am next day.

As I said earlier, I never drive with a hangover so I probably wouldn't drive in OP's shoes, but there's no risk that she'd fail a breathalyser.

No you don't. You assume it. Of course there is a risk she might fail a breathalyser. She also may not, but it's a risk.

And for me, one not worth taking. I would rather be on the cautious side. If I'm planning drinking anything more than a couple then I don't drive the next day.

Robostripes · 02/06/2022 18:35

I don’t drink pints but on the basis that 16 units is about a bottle and a half of wine, I’d happily get through that in a sunny afternoon and wouldn’t even think to question whether I’d still be over the limit at 11am the next day. Usually if I drink in the afternoon and stop by around 7/8 I feel completely sober by bedtime.

toomuchlaundry · 02/06/2022 18:52

@Robostripes many people think they are fine to drive in the morning after drinking over the limit amounts of alcohol the night before as feel sober, and then have a shock to find they are over the limit the next morning.

I agree.

When the limit lowered here, it really did make most people much more wary about driving the next day after a few drinks.

It's certainly common with the people I know to not drive the next day if they are drinking any more than a couple the nights before

autumntimebrowns · 02/06/2022 19:37

Just be scientific about it and buy a breatherliser kit

AliceMcK · 02/06/2022 19:43

6 pints of larger with 2 meals (I need to eat after drinking, plus breakfast), a good nights sleep & plenty of fluids, I think I’d be fine.

For me would fully depend on what I was drinking, larger or cider I’d be fine, but more than 16 units of wine I’d be apprehensive as it effects be differently.

MoodyTwo · 02/06/2022 19:47

OP I have no idea, however 6 pints , although more than your weekly allowance is not bad, have fun !

Shade17 · 02/06/2022 19:56

I know of someone who had 2 pints at lunchtime. Got the train home after work - got in the car and drove home - met a motorcycle head on at the brow of a hill - totally motorcyclists fault as he was overtaking and on wrong side of road etc - motorcyclist unfortunately died at the scene.

However, the person driving the car, although technically not at fault - driving position, speed, etc was all as it should be, they were breathalysed as routine and found to be just very slightly over the limit but over the limit nonetheless and therefore prosecuted and riddled with the "what if" guilt ....

So, this person was still over the limit maybe 4+ hours after having 2 pints? Doesn’t seem to add up…

toomuchlaundry · 02/06/2022 20:00

@Shade17 maybe shows some people take longer for the alcohol to work through their system. So should always err on the side of caution

Oh I understand, I’m just saying I wouldn’t even have thought to worry that I’d still be over the limit tbh. When I was younger and used to stay out drinking until 3/4am, yes then I thought about it, but not if I’d been drinking during the day and finished by 7/8pm. I might buy a breathalyser kit to see!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 02/06/2022 20:14

I'd be in bed all day after 6 pints - so no 😂

toomuchlaundry · 02/06/2022 20:17

It would be an interesting exercise if everyone who says they would be okay after drinking a certain amount try a breathalyser kit in the morning and see if they would be @Robostripes

iklboo · 02/06/2022 20:31

Gross. A planned binge. A binge drinker so committed to getting pissed, they plan it. And who is arrogant enough to believe they will not harm anyone else

Oh give over. I absolutely wouldn't harm anyone else after drinking 6 pints - or unit equivalent - because I don't drive.

I have one and always test in the morning after I've had a few so know my limits. So far I've always been well under or totally clear. I do seem to metabolise alcohol quite quickly though for some unknown reason, just from looking at my testing results and timings. I can handle quite a lot and have never had a hangover either.

FlowerDee · 02/06/2022 20:41

I’d be dead after 6 pints 😵

NotMushroomInEre · 02/06/2022 21:45

Nobody is asking about other people's alcohol tolerance/intolerance. The OP asked if she'd be fine to drive 16 hours after having 16 units. The answer to that, according to all guidelines, is yes. So she won't be driving whilst drunk.

SirChenjins · 02/06/2022 21:51

Unless she is. Only way to check for definite is to buy a breathalyser and check as pp have said.

NotMushroomInEre · 02/06/2022 21:53

@SirChenjins unless she is an anomaly, she'll be fine. Do you really think those breathalysers are accurate? If they are, why are they not a legal requirement?

Oblomov22 · 02/06/2022 21:56

Dead?

FFS

Hmm
1FootInTheRave · 02/06/2022 22:04

I always thought it was approx 1 hour per unit?

Bizarrely after 6 pints I'd likely be comatose and rough as a badgers arse the day after. Equivalent units of wine and I'd feel okay.

Dh is the opposite.

VWCV · 02/06/2022 22:04

FlowerDee · 02/06/2022 20:41

Well you wouldn't have to worry about driving the next day.

Sunnysal · 02/06/2022 22:05

I was breathalysed at 10am after 2 bottles of wine the night before. No problem and the limit is very low here.

WouldBeGood · 02/06/2022 22:06

Yes. That’s fine

Yeah, going with your gut instinct is far better 🙄

of course they’re not 100% accurate, but will give a reasonable indication. If they’re showing you’re over then you’d have to be a dick to get behind the wheel.
