If you drank this much alcohol... would you drive tomorrow?

16.4 units (lager)... starting 1pm finishing probably 7pm. Driving tomorrow 11am...

1 glass of wine of an evening and you're an alcoholic on Mumsnet.

Hardly.

More than your weekly allowance in a few hours then some of us will raise an eyebrow. Bring a self professed heavy drinker is something that stopped being impressive or vaguely interesting around the age of 20.

Chumleymouse · 02/06/2022 15:20

6 pints over 6 hours is not really binge drinking in my book.

AryaStarkWolf · 02/06/2022 15:21

Yes I would

Smartsub · 02/06/2022 15:21

My concern would be whether I would stop at 6 once I got a taste for it, especially at a social thing where people tend to just bring you the next one, although I am getting better at abandoning drinks when I've had enough.

@Oblomov22 no people with the exception of young people don’t drink that amounts unless they are an alcoholic. You are minimising and that’s really dangerous. Better to be offended than not face up to reality. Being an alcoholic is not just a daily reliance on alcohol.

What an odd thing to say! Actually a lot more of today's youngsters drink less than my age group (50's) did when they were young. Also, when I have a get together with my sister (about once a month or so) we will definitely have more than the equivalent of 6 pints. Neither of us drink much the rest of the month. Neither of us are young people or alcoholics. I am sure there are many people of all ages (like the OP) who are just like us. I have my face very much in reality, thank you, I'm not minimising so stop being quite so dramatic. It's not a choice between teetotal or alcoholic, sometimes people let their hair down. Doesn't make them alcoholics!

Reflexes and judgement can be affected before someone feels fuzzy or other effects of alcohol.

I can see with the numbers others are posting why it would make sense for other people to do so, particularly if you know how well your body will handle it. There are too many factors for a universal judgement though the rough estimates can be useful. Only you know the factors for yourself.

I personally wouldn't, but I was once forced into a car with someone intoxicated and it was fucking terrifying even though it turned out (after they were pulled over and arrested and so tested) to be technically under the limit blood alcohol wise. It was only through sheer luck no one was on the pavements and the driver stopped when she did after she'd hit so many things. She wouldn't have said she felt fuzzy, insulted to have it implied, so I'm overly cautious and wary of thinking I would absolutely know I or someone else is sober enough after drinking.

EwwSprouts · 02/06/2022 15:27

Wow is 6 pints over a whole afternoon and part evening really that bad? Even at say a wedding or all day barbecue etc? Looks like I need to reevaluate my "letting my hair down" days 🙈
If you're planning on 6 pints between 1pm-7pm then that's going to the bar every thirty minutes for a bottle/half a pint. For me, I'd call that heavy drinking and not drive. But I am a lightweight and lunchtime drinking always hits me harder. If you regularly have 'let your hair down days' then maybe your body can deal with it.

You'll be fine to drive tomorrow. It wouldn't even cross my mind. I can drink 2 bottles of wine, and be up the next day at 630am, bright eyed and bushy tailed.

And over the limit if you were breathalysed.

Gross. A planned binge. A binge drinker so committed to getting pissed, they plan it. And who is arrogant enough to believe they will not harm anyone else.

Oh calm down Hmm

Hallyup89 · 02/06/2022 15:34

Just don't drink so much. It's not bloody difficult. The fact that you feel you need to drink a huge amount of alcohol before you've even started is absolutely insane. I'm surprised you can stay off the loo for enough time to drink that much tbh.

PineappleTart · 02/06/2022 15:36

OP I always go by the one hour for every unit with the time starting when you finish the last drink. I add an hour or so

Ignore those acting like you're having a couple of bottles of vodka, enjoy yourself Wine

OnaBegonia · 02/06/2022 15:39

1 pint per hour for 6 hours is not a massive binge
MN is ridiculous about drink, 16 hrs before driving will be plenty time to safe for driving.

Oblomov22 · 02/06/2022 15:44

@LilacPoppy

"don’t drink that amounts unless they are an alcoholic."

I disagree.

I don't think this renders you an alcoholic.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 02/06/2022 15:44

I barely drink any more - mainly due to my job, also because my recovery time has changed drastically.

It has been a long long time since I’ve had the equivalent of 6 pints. If I did, I’d probably give it a good 24-36 hours.

My bladder wouldn’t thank me either. It wouldn’t be a day out but a day in. I’d never be away from the loo.

It's 6 pints of beer... yes I would drive.

I think you need to take a look outside of your house, maybe visit a few street party's going on this weekend, get your head out your arse and take a look around.

The OP has already said she’s a heavy drinker - street party my arse (with my head well and truly out of it)

BusterGonad · 02/06/2022 15:58

I don't think anyone having 6 pints in one day is an alcoholic. That's a ridiculous statement to make. You didn't just imply it about the Op. It was a sweeping statement.

It's going to the bar once an hour. If you're with two other people it's 2 visits 😆

JinglingHellsBells · 02/06/2022 15:59

Late to the party, but supposedly our bodies get rid of 1 unit per hour.
