If you drank this much alcohol... would you drive tomorrow?

16.4 units (lager)... starting 1pm finishing probably 7pm. Driving tomorrow 11am...

Just because most of MN dare not drink more than a thimble of sherry at Christmas, doesn't mean OP would be.

Oblomov22 · 02/06/2022 14:12

@LilacPoppy

"That’s not normal for anyone other than a very young adult/student or an alcoholic."

That's sort of OTT comment, is offensive, to alcoholism and what a serious thing being an alcoholic is.

Are you more concerned about getting a fine and points for being over the drink drive limit or actually the possibility of injuring or killing someone because your reactions were not quick enough?

As someone who was injured by a stupid driver who still thinks they weren’t in the wrong despite being prosecuted and banned from driving, please don’t take unnecessary risks with other people’s lives. ☹️

Getting banned. Not remotely concerned about hurting anyone because I wouldn't get behind a wheel if I felt slightly fuzzy, I'm not a scumbag. I won't be on the floor after a few beers. It's 6 pints of lager not 6 pints of Jack Daniels 🙄

Why would you calculate 1 unit per hour when you STOP drinking. Surely you start metabolising shortly after you start. I have an alcometer thing. It is very reassuring when it comes to driving the next day. I have never been over the limit in the morning. So I’m happy to know my body well enough now to be able to calculate my limits. A bottle of wine is about 10 units ( I don’t drink strong reds) I would be totally safe, and have proved it enough times to know that driving the next morning is totally legal.

MarvellousMay · 02/06/2022 14:14

I wouldn’t in the morning but would in the afternoon.

Wow is 6 pints over a whole afternoon and part evening really that bad? Even at say a wedding or all day barbecue etc? Looks like I need to reevaluate my "letting my hair down" days 🙈

I always think of the josh widdicomb joke:

'People who drink always say they dont do it to get drunk its just that they like the taste... well I like the taste of milk but Ive never downed 6 pints of milk in a night'

Svara · 02/06/2022 14:14

Why not think of it as if you have to drive at 11am, then how much can you drink if the event ends at 7 rather than the other way around? So just set a lower limit accordingly?

L0bstersLass · 02/06/2022 14:15

Two issues here - one is will you be sober enough, second is will you feel well enough.
You would be sober enough as the half life of alcohol is 4-5 hours so you'd be under the limit by 11.
So it comes down to if you feel well enough. If you feel dreadful then I'd suggest you don't drive. If you're fine then crack on

Nope I thoroughly admit it... and again this one is for another thread, which will give people on here the chance to dust down their high horse that is obviously kept stashed away for such occasions. I drink to get the buzz. If I drank for the taste I'd have a can of lilt!

It’s between 60 and 100 minutes per units and that countdown only starts once you stop drinking.

It doesn't start when you stop drinking, your body starts metabolising alcohol straight away.
That's why if you drink slowly through a day you don't get as drunk as if you consumed the same amount in a short period of time.

Figgygal · 02/06/2022 14:30

Op go enjoy your day
Mumsnet seems full of tee total pearl clutchers who would be legless at the sniff of a babycham today

myammus · 02/06/2022 14:33

i wouldn’t risk it, no. I’ve never planned how many drinks I’m going to have in advance, is that something you usually do?

toomuchlaundry · 02/06/2022 14:33

Maybe some people on MN have lost relatives to drunk drivers @Figgygal like I have. Quite happy for OP to drink 6 pints, not quite so happy for her to drive afterwards

Very rough guidance would suggest leaving one hour per unit. So say 16 units over 8 hours I'd say you needed to leave 8 hours after the drinking stopped (at least) the planned journey seems to be planned 16 hours after the drinking stops . Notwithstanding that I wouldn't drink 16 units in one day (now) I would expect someone to be fine and well below the legal dd limit.

Figstar4eva · 02/06/2022 14:36

Yes, I would. Stopped at 7, most probably ate a few times over drinking timespan, drinking was spread out.

toastfairy · 02/06/2022 14:37

sorry I misread as 11am start, still I'd say you'd be ok

Smartsub · 02/06/2022 14:37

So about 5/6 pints of premium lager? Yes I would.

I'd be reluctant if I'd been drinking late into the evening, but consider it OK if I had my last drink by 7pm

TBH I don't drive with a hangover, regardless of whether I'd pass a breathalyser, but I wouldn't expect a hangover from 6 pints over 6 hours and a evening to rehydrate afterwards.

Chumleymouse · 02/06/2022 14:38

i don’t think 1 pint per hour is bad at all

Alabamahammer · 02/06/2022 14:38

I would definitely drive within the time frame you said. I'm also quite a heavy drinker and could quite easily have 6 pints or 6 doubles in the time you said.
I usually leave about 12 hours or longer before I have to drive.

Mount2Climb · 02/06/2022 14:42

From 1pm to 11am that is 22 hours. I don't think you'd be over the limit by 11am. Whether you'd be safe to drive depends on how hungover you feel. Tiredness also kills in driving!
I would drink maximum 4 pints to be safe or make arrangements to go home safely.

I think 6 pints over that time would make a novice drinker very drunk possibly blackout but a seasoned liver can take it, say someone with a drinking career of 20+ years. Yeah she'd be drunk by 7pm but not completely out of it specially if she's eating and drinking water as well.

NotMushroomInEre · 02/06/2022 14:44

A very rough guide is that your liver processes a unit each hour after you stop. So that gives you 16 hours. I would, if I didn't feel rough.

TortugaRumCakeQueen · 02/06/2022 14:44

You'll be fine to drive tomorrow. It wouldn't even cross my mind. I can drink 2 bottles of wine, and be up the next day at 630am, bright eyed and bushy tailed.

I drink only rarely, basically only when I do one certain activity, which happens about 4 times a year. During a day I'll drink 9-10 pints over 15 hours. I know I've had a drink and I wouldn't drive early next day, but a long long way from blacking out

toomuchlaundry · 02/06/2022 14:48

@TortugaRumCakeQueen doesn't matter how bright eyed and bushy tailed you are, your blood alcohol levels also matter

Wasn’t Ant caught drink driving the day after drinking?
