I caught DH making love to our kettle

Obviously this is clickbait. Sorry.

Can anyone recommend a really durable electric kettle?

In the last five/six years or so we've had a breville and a Russell and Hobbs, both of which have started leaking. Surely kettles should last longer than that!

OP posts:
zingally · 01/06/2022 10:40

Mine is a Russell Hobbs and is getting on for 11 years old, has had daily use and is still going strong! You've been unlucky. Mine is nothing fancy, I usually go for the "mid-range" version of everything!

AmyDudley · 01/06/2022 10:40

I live in hard water area and kettles last no time at all. I always just buy cheap ones now. Current kettle is a basic Wilko model, and has lasted several years. It may not have the aesthetics your DH desires, but it will do the job

TheLadyDIdGood · 01/06/2022 10:50

We've got a Russell Hobbs kettle with a built in Brita filter which is working a treat so far. We live in a very hard water area & kettles didn't last more than a few years even with descaling.
Brita Russell Hobbs kettle

Hoosemover · 01/06/2022 10:50

Delonghi kettle, got one as a wedding present. Still going strong after 19 years.

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 01/06/2022 10:59

We've had our kettle for 5 years, it's a Russell hobbs see through one that changes colour.
Never had any issues with it.
Added a pic for your dh to admire. Grin😚

Alessi Mickey Mouse one, sits on the gas hob. Not electric therefore nothing to break.

Superbabe64 · 01/06/2022 11:13

Dualit kettle and toaster here...both 10 years ++

HermioneKipper · 01/06/2022 11:17

Hot water tap. Game changer. I’m in love with ours

Ditch the kettle and get a Quooker tap.

Are they of any use to randy husbands though? I gather they're boiling and/or sparkling, the mind boggles!

Wexone · 01/06/2022 11:34

Invest in a boiling tap. Had to buy a kettle once a year for 7 years, had the boiling tap for 7 years after never once had an issue with it. Its paid for its self 10 times over. Now in a rental, hate having to boil a kettle ( i know 1st world problems) Bought an expensive one it lasted 6 months :(. Cant wait for my new house with my boiling tap

Thelnebriati · 01/06/2022 11:47

Buy a cheap one that you dislike, with the intention of replacing it as soon as you can afford to.

SiobhanSharpe · 01/06/2022 11:48

i'm having my kitchen refitted soon and am definitely going for a Quooker (or similar). I haven't had a decent kettle since the one I had as a wedding present umpteen years ago. It lasted 20 years plus.

MrsSiriusBlack1 · 01/06/2022 12:04

Best kettle we ever had was a £7 one from Morrisons ten years ago. Got rid of it when kitchen was redecorated and regretted it ever since! Always being disappointed by kettles 😂

MrsMAgain · 01/06/2022 12:31

It was the tenderness from the DH towards the kettle in the title that got me.

Sorry to hear your relationship has gone off the boil, OP. Brew

Sorry, that emoji was probably insensitive.

Out of necessity, we have 4 currently on the go:

  • Sage kettle, bought when reduced. Looks good in the kitchen, slightly heavy but that makes it sturdy, care needed by kettle-abusing DHs as gets very hot to the touch, does the job perfectly, still going strong after a couple of years and hopefully will be long lasting.
  • Le Creuset stainless steel stove top kettle, bought when reduced. Great during power cuts as the hob is gas, the whistle when it boils means it can't be forgotten so less likely to need re-boiling, looks good in the kitchen, heavy but sturdy, takes longer to boil and again gets very hot to the touch, but will probably last forever if we remember not to leave water standing in it when not in use.
  • Sainsbury's basic white plastic kettle, bought years ago for less than £10. Doesn't look great after all this time but still does the job, lightweight, probably the best value after years of service and might even be heading off to uni to start a second life with a DC.
  • Cygnet stainless steel 30L tea urn/water boiler, again bought when reduced. Fantastic when feeding the 5,000 or during boiler/immersion heater breakdowns, bulky and care needed as it gets hot and 30L is quite a volume of boiling water to have around DC/vulnerable adults/pets, but still looking good and working well after a few years - should last if we remember not to leave water standing in it for long. Does DH like big kettles?
I think price is often irrelevant when it comes to performance and durability. It's whatever turns him on, really.
WildCherryBlossom · 01/06/2022 15:58

Wow MrsMAgain - how often do you use the 30L urn? Do you hold a lot of enormous tea parties?

We have a stove pot kettle from John Lewis. There is no reason it won't last for ever. We've had it for about 15 years so far. I love it.

AnneKipankitoo · 01/06/2022 16:26

Are friends electric ? DH’s friends with benefits are.
However @MrsMAgain DH found love and it was a gas ! A little polyamory going on there .
Personally speaking, it’s me that turns the kettle on .

This made me chuckle!

And click obviously Grin

I can’t offer any advice as my kettle handle broke after a few weeks and it wasn’t cheap one.

I hope you took it back for a refund.

A word of warning for the pp who are off to descale their long-neglected kettles: sometimes the limescale is what is holding it all together. Ask me how I know.

Ah... too late.
So far kettle is holding itself together :)

100problems · 01/06/2022 19:22

Is there a more dispiriting experience than a well earned, perfect looking cup of tea that tastes of limescale? Envy

Very true. We have very hard water.

We have tried every make and price bracket going. They all die in 6 -14 months.

The current kettle is B&Ms finest in tasteful chartreuse green, the bloody thing won't die.

LIbertyCharles · 02/06/2022 17:51

We do the same. £7 from Tesco. We just replaced our last one after a decade and we live in a hard water area. I’ve bought madly expensive kettles that all break after a year. The cheapo plastic ones outlive them all!

Lincslady53 · 02/06/2022 18:36

We have a glass kettle bought from Lidl about 5 years ago. Descaled every few weeks with lemon juice. Easy to see when the scale starts to build up, boils quickly and cost about £20.

Bleachmycloths · 02/06/2022 19:00

Crappy click bait. I hope you don’t find a suitable kettle for years….
