I caught DH making love to our kettle

Obviously this is clickbait. Sorry.

Can anyone recommend a really durable electric kettle?

In the last five/six years or so we've had a breville and a Russell and Hobbs, both of which have started leaking. Surely kettles should last longer than that!

I guess your husband is hot right?

rnsaslkih · 01/06/2022 09:00

5-6 years is pretty standard these days. Things aren’t well made anymore.

NeedToKnow101 · 01/06/2022 09:06

Bet that was steamy!
Kettle advise? Whatever one you get, descale regularly

ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop · 01/06/2022 09:11

What, in the spout?

I have a Delonghi one that's been going for about 10 years now. I put one of those wire wool balls inside it to "soak up" the limescale and that seems to have helped extend its life.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 01/06/2022 09:12

Did you realise there was something brewing or was it all a complete surprise?

MelvinThePenguin · 01/06/2022 09:13

Ditch the kettle and get a Quooker tap.

prettyteapotsplease · 01/06/2022 09:17

I've never had a kettle actually leak but none of them last like they used to. My dear old mum probably got through no more than three kettles in her lifetime (that I know about) but I must have had twice as many in half the time. Built-in obsolescence and all that - they don't make 'em like they used to.

I usually choose mid-range - neither dead cheap or stupidly expensive and they last a fair while. The big names aren't usually worth paying extra for as they last no longer IMHO.

100problems · 01/06/2022 09:18

I've got a Dualit that is about 10 years old. It came out to the toaster recently so things have been a bit emotional on their side of the kitchen.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 01/06/2022 09:20

Dualit but you have to regularly descale if in hard water area

Allergictoironing · 01/06/2022 09:21

Last Asda cheapest one was about 5 years and counting, and was only retired to the back of the cupboard as an emergency spare as my DSis bought me a Cuisinart one from Lakeland about 6 years ago - that's still going strong about 5 years later, though you can't rely on the indicator on the side to tell you it's full. The Cuisinart one boild a bit faster than the Asda one, and looks snazzier, but otherwise little difference.

Hard water area, descale every month or two

Dominuse · 01/06/2022 09:22

Oh god I had this problem for years then I brought a kitchen aid kettle and oh my god I love it. I mean love it. You would have to prise it out of my dead hands 😂😜
it is super quick to heat up and you can change the temperature and it keeps the water warm for ages.

love it I’m not posh and don’t have loads of money but it was worth every god damn penny.
5 years old and looks as good as new.

tootiredtoocare · 01/06/2022 09:35

You may need to descale more often. We get mid-range ones and haven't been disappointed, although we're in a soft water area.

DinosaurOfFire · 01/06/2022 09:42

We have an expensive Bosch one with different temperature settings and its lasted about 5 years so far and no signs of letting up. I live in a soft water area though.

Greyhare · 01/06/2022 09:48

I have a Dualit that it is quite old for me (3. or 4 years) but I do use a water filter as in very hard water area.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 01/06/2022 10:01

Cuisinart, but we have very soft water so all of our appliances last longer here than they did when we lived in London.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 01/06/2022 10:03

Slightly alarmed by the pp who are drinking their softened water…

MrsReeves · 01/06/2022 10:03

Stainless steel hob kettle here, had it at least 15 years, still looks and works like new

Champagneforeveryone · 01/06/2022 10:06

We have a Dualit kettle which cost more than my first car but is allegedly future proof. We should be able to change the element ourselves and as it's stainless steel it's very hard wearing.

It was however mildly disconcerting when DH pointed out that I had (hopefully) bought my last every kettle 🧐

Pea79 · 01/06/2022 10:11

I have a Dualit Dome and it's still going strong after about 9 years. Never leaked. That's with heavy use and a fortnightly descaling (as I live in an extremely hard water area).

MrsMop1964 · 01/06/2022 10:16

at least he can't be 'up the spout' 😆

comfortablyfrumpy · 01/06/2022 10:20

Wilko cheapy here 4 years in and still good. Replaced another cheapy which lasted years.
You have, however, guilted me into descaling it. I have very hard water here and realised poor kettle was very neglected.

Well, a chap needs a hobby...

MissStarry · 01/06/2022 10:32

I’m almost reluctant to suggest this given your title, but I have a Smeg kettle and highly recommend!

Aussiegirl123456 · 01/06/2022 10:35

Haha love it!

We have a smeg one. Total waste of money, paint bubbled within a few weeks. I mean, it boils water well, but so does a cheap Kmart / target / asda / tesco one. I wish we just got a cheap one.
