The country is a shit show - why is there so little mention of Brexit's role?

That's it really.

Surely all our woes can't be placed at the door of covid and war - it is a good political narrative, but is it really true?

I'm amazed how little questioning by the media and public there is about the role of Brexit.

Youre from Australia, is that right Marsha?

ive just had to let my incredible Australian staffer go. She’s got a right to be here (Spain) (married to a local etc) but not the paperwork because of COVID offices being closed, appointment backlogs etc. She is really pissed off that it wouldn’t have happened were she Irish, French etc. She’s incredulous at what we Brits have done.

An American friend of mine feel exactly the same. In his words 'I'd kill for EU passport '.

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/06/2022 15:36

Sorry, that should have been How has Brexit improved your life and community Florenz?

P00rKids · 11/06/2022 15:40

I have a young, bright, aspirational teen also wanting to study medicine. Sorry I haven’t connected the dots there. Brexit will not hinder his opportunities. I can’t see in any way why it would. I would like for our young people to do well and have successful careers. Can’t see the connection?

British / Aus as born in U.K.

Wouldn’t she be more annoyed re Covid backlog?

As even if we were in EU it wouldn’t stop her going back

QuentininQuarantino · 11/06/2022 15:58

Her point is that her Irish, French etc colleagues don’t have to jump through those hoops. They don’t have to make appointments at Covid-closed offices in the first place, because they’re in a better position.

P00rKids · 11/06/2022 15:20

You voted away the rights of our young people, young, bright, aspirational, adventurous young people.

Eh, this I don’t get? What young people? So you’re pissed coz your kids wanted to move abroad - out of UK. Ok then 🤷‍♂️

I am pissed because the UK electorate voted away opportunities that they benefited from. Fortunately my children have dual nationality so some of the difficulties are mitigated for them. It's the working and lower middle class, English people I feel most sad for wrt to the end of FOM.

Witchofthedales · 11/06/2022 16:01

Greensleeves · 31/05/2022 21:46

Because the numpties who voted for it get very red and angry if anyone dares to draw attention to the almighty clusterfuck they've caused?

Summed up perfectly! 👏👏

LastTrainEast · 11/06/2022 16:02

Well the answer I suppose is that it was obvious. I doubt there was anyone watching the news who didn't know we'd left the EU. Still it was talked about a lot. The remainers went on and on about it.

Anything we gained from Brixit would be long term so I'd be amazed if anyone could point at wonderful results from it. Remainers of course got up the next morning and said "see! it's not better" 😂

And of course trying to set up new trade deals in the middle of a pandemic, a war and with economic sanctions wasn't ideal.

We had/have a lot of trouble with the Northern Ireland border. That was a ridiculous situation before Brexit and trying to please everyone compounded it.

You'll never know for certain which was the best choice because there's no way to know what would have happened for certain had we stayed, but in say 10 years it should be possible to have a reasoned opinion.

MarshaBradyo · 11/06/2022 16:05

Sure but it still wouldn’t help her situation if Brexit hadn’t happened. I can imagine she’s angry at having to go back though

I do have a sibling in the EU who was annoyed, probably more than me as they did have to jump through some hoops to stay

I can’t say I would kill or even hanker after an EU passport as in pp, I guess it wasn’t the top reason why remain was important to me at the time, although I do feel very appreciative of having two passports anyway

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/06/2022 16:09

It is not the next morningHmm. It is 2022. 6 years on from the vote. Brexit is not yet done, is a fucking mess and life is going to get even more difficult because of it.

Florenz · 11/06/2022 16:18

"It's the working and lower middle class, English people I feel most sad for wrt to the end of FOM."

In what way does the end of FOM affect the vast majority of working and lower class English people negatively? Yes it it has a negative effect on the very small number of them who wanted to work abroad, but for the rest?

QuentininQuarantino · 11/06/2022 16:24

she doesn’t have to go back, she’s just lost her job. I hope I can rehire her once she sorts her paperwork. Because she’s awesome! But her words were something like “why on earth would you choose to make things shittier.”

But maybe we see the shitshow clearer than most as we’re recruiting (or not!) from out of the EU and we are on the front line of telling people their dreams are dashed.

P00rKids · 11/06/2022 16:25

@TooBigForMyBoots means shit to me though - me and my kids not moving anywhere anyway. Never did, never planned to, not planning to. Just don’t see it that way. So that it no way did, or ever would influence my vote

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/06/2022 16:26

Negative effect on holiday makers. A negative effect on all the people who worked hard all their lives to buy a wee place in the sun. A negative effect on the booze cruisers for their Mum's 60th birthday. A negative impact on the Amsterdam weekenders. And the million pet owners.

How has the end of FOM benefited you and your community @Florenz?

P00rKids · 11/06/2022 16:29

Maybe some see the shitstorm clearer though. Looks a bit like this I guess💨💩 ⛈💩💨😂

P00rKids · 11/06/2022 16:32

@TooBigForMyBoots you can still go on fucking holiday u loon. It’s a bit tricky tho, you just have to you know, remember your passport, take it out your pocket, open it, turn to the last page and show it to customs within their field of vision (approx 50cm away)

I guess so. Dh has loads of EU staff but they have all stayed based on what they had to do. Recruiting new people - not sure. Hopefully the visa thing will kick in and they can take from further afield too

It’s interesting though as Aus has the strictest border control and generally seems appreciated by most there, it can work for citizens in that country so they are happy with it, but it is hard if you are in a difficult position

Join the non EU queue, wait an age to have it stamped and date checked.. (might only take a few sec's but there is 700 in that queue.. about 3 A320's worth) pay approx £150 to 250 each time you bring your pet into the EU, limited to 90 days in any 180 period.

What ridiculous situation with the border pre brexit? Your just making stuff up now to suit your belief.

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/06/2022 17:02

Yeah, but you dont get to swan through the Green Channels, and entitlement to EHIC has ended. Those who were lucky enough to have bought abroad, are no longer able to live or even spend all the colder months in them. Have Duty Free allowances come back in yet?

How has end of FOM benefited you@P00rKids?

P00rKids · 11/06/2022 17:34

@TooBigForMyBoots it never benefitted THEM in the first place. Nor me. Nor anyone I know. Oh yes, actually one Hungarian family I know whose children now live all over Europe. But not me or mine soz

P00rKids · 11/06/2022 17:40

Oh fuck yes! My property in the Costa and rural retreat in the Perinnese! Other than those and my estate in South of France I’m fine. My dream to invest further into my European property portfolio is admittedly smashed tho :(

Peregrina · 11/06/2022 17:43

Anything we gained from Brixit would be long term so I'd be amazed if anyone could point at wonderful results from it.

No. Easiest deals in history, we hold all the cards, remember? So six years on, where are those easy deals? Once we are out of the EU we can cut VAT on fuel. Not happened - it would be a jolly good thing right now if it were cut, so it's not the EU stopping them.

So what's the next excuse? Don't say Covid because we'd never heard of it until the end of 2019. Don't say War in Ukraine, because a) we are not actually at war, and b) when Russia was busy taking over Crimea the current Government was quite happy to be bankrolled by Russian money.

Peregrina · 11/06/2022 17:45

We now have a GHIC, with G standing for Global, which covers less of the globe than the EHIC did. Well, the current Government are not noted for their geographical knowledge.

Yes this really shouldn’t take an age should it
