I’ve had 2 ginger cats.

the last one was the loveliest, tunic daftest cat I’ve ever met;

he loved water and getting wet. He’d sit outside in the rain. He also had a habit of getting smelly ie letting a Tom cat scent mark him. I used to bathe him around once a month due to various scents he’d pick up.

he used to sleep on his back with his paws in the air.

he regularly falloff the sofa when he rolled over and always looked shocked that it had happened.

he used to bring me ‘presents’ - basically anything he found of interest ie washing up sponges, stale bread roll in paper bag, nylon pan scrub etc.

I still miss the daft brush.

though my current cat purrs constantly, even when he’s asleep.

My only experience of a ginger cat was one that my late DM had quite a few years ago. My DM got him and his tortoiseshell sister when they were 5 months old, from my brother's girlfriend, who's cat had had a litter of 6. My DM already had 2 female cats, aged 16 months. He was a lovely boy,a bit boisterous with the girls, but so loving and affectionate. He wasn't a 'lap-cat',only one of my mum's cats were, but he would sit right next to me on the sofa, and press himself up against me. I would say he was definitely more adventurous than the girls, who rarely went into the next door neighbours' gardens,or wander out the front into the (thankfully very quiet) road. He was also the only one who would go to meet my DM half way down the road when she was coming home from shopping. Having said that,he was very wary of strangers, and would hide if someone he didn't know came into the house.

The most affectionate characterful creatures I've ever had the honour to know. Just gorgeous.

I have a ginger girl, she is very vocal and very loving. Loves a cuddle and always hankering to be on my lap. Very timid with strangers, maybe because she is a rescue.

Mine was so lovely and 100% a mummy's boy, but had zero going on behind the eyes. Oh I miss him.

Funkyslippers · 29/05/2022 18:31

I have 2 ginger kittens, we were told both female but the vet took 1 look at one of them and confirmed he's a boy! I did have my suspicions. He's very sweet and affectionate whereas we don't see much of the girl. She's quite sweet though. As there's 2 of them they spend most of their time together playing.

My fave at the moment though is our resident tabby girl cat, age 16. She's my baby. I can take or leave the other 2 🤣. I'm very proud of how she's accepted the 2 ginger tearaways ( though she does'play' fight with them when they get on her nerves)

nokitchen · 30/05/2022 07:52

We have one. He lets you stroke his head but not his body.

autumnboys · 31/05/2022 14:20

I’ve had cats of all colours, including two gingers. The first was adorable, very cuddly and sweet natured. The second, our current cat, is also adorable, but not even remotely cuddly. I currently have Covid and he’s sleeping on the bed by me, very uncharacteristic.

darlingdodo · 31/05/2022 14:26

Our two. Boycat is thick as mince and cuddly. Girlcat is very aloof unless she wants something and has all the brains.

They are loving and mischievous and occasionally sulky, just like every other cat😁

Indoorcatmum · 26/03/2023 15:35

I have three.

Only kind I would ever get!

Ginger boys are the best cats in the whole world and 100% more affectionate and wanting to be involved in what the household is doing

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/03/2023 15:37

Our half Maine Coone ginger boy was magnificent and the soppiest of creatures. Our short haired British boy is aloof as they come. I feel honoured when he picks my lap 😁 my parents’ old ginger would lurk at the bottom of the stairs, pounce and bite feet.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 26/03/2023 15:49

Don't think there's a brain cell in his head but we love him. We've had him since 10 days old

The colour of a cats fur has nothing to do with their personality. Although from my experience of rescues, it’s a sad fact that many people tend to gravitate towards the ‘pretty’ ones, therefore a ginger maybe interacted with more than a cat they see as ‘less pretty’. More positive interactions may result in them being perceived as being friendlier.
In my mind all cats should be equal. I hate it when people ignore the black/ white/ black & whites and makes a beeline for the Tabby / Tortie /Gingers/ Greys.

I'd made up my mind I was going to adopt a black cat as I know they are harder to rehome. Then I saw my black and white boy and I knew he was the one. He's 18 now and when he goes the only requirement for another cat would be it was male and not black and white - I couldn't have one that looked like him

704703hey · 26/03/2023 17:19

The friendliest cat I ever met was a ginger. I was in weston super mare of all places and he took an intense shine to me. When I moved I had difficulty getting him off my lap because he clung on with grim determination. He was adorable. I reckon he self identified as my husband!

I have no idea whose cat he was but apparently he never went back after I left and I had a phone call asking me if I'd taken the cat 😆

TheEliminator · 26/03/2023 17:21

We had two as a kid. One was the most horrid, scratchy feral thing ever. The other one was the sweetest little girlie ever, I could have cuddled her forever ❤️

GreenMarigold · 26/03/2023 17:31

Having known thousands of cats over the years, I chose a ginger tom when it came to getting a kitten when my children were small.

There are always exceptions but on the whole they are the most reliably placid and good natured cats.

Ours loves our kids and will make a beeline for them when they come home from school. He also gets along brilliantly with our dog, always gives each other sniffs of acknowledgment when he comes in.

On the downside he is a prolific hunter and brings everything home (into the house, live, if possible). He also likes to be accompanied to his food bowl, even if there is already food there, little weirdo 🤷‍♀️

Mine is a dick but we love him

Pinkallium · 26/03/2023 17:46

Love this thread. My ginger boy is now 19 years old and has been the most fabulous pet. He’s very friendly and loving. He has an incredibly loud purr which he uses a lot - he often starts purring if I just look at him. Prefers women to men though so is no where near as friendly to DH!

pointythings · 26/03/2023 18:24

I've just realised I totally failed to pay the tax back in May, so here are my two ginger loons. I will leave it up to you to guess which one is the really stupid one.

We only had Colin until he was 11 months and he was an absolute whirlwind terror but in a nice way. He was very food oriented and would growl eating raw chicken..

He addicted me for the first 6 months and used to sleep in my armpit. He was very needy, but also gorgeous

I got seriously fucked over by a ginger cat in India. He was bigger than I expected. Ginger, black stripes with white and some white dots behind the ears. Bit my leg clean off when I was gathering peacock feathers next to the bungalow.

We have ginger Maine Coon brothers. One is sweetness incarnate and his brother a moody wanker. See if you can guess which is which.
