Have you ever been really affected by the death of a celebrity? Is this normal?

I feel so heartbroken at Ray Liotta passing away. My husband and friends must think I'm crackers but I genuinely have been fond of him for years and years. I always hoped I would meet him one day and believed

Elvis Presley. I was a child at the time but I remember being really upset.

Princess Diana, I was absolutely devastated. But I was 10 weeks pregnant so I think hormones had a part to play in that.

Same here. There's been a few that came as a shock - George Michael for one but I've never reacted more than thinking it was sad. I've certainly never cried over someone I dont know

RJnomore1 · 27/05/2022 21:27

@lizziesiddal79 river for me too. I was 17 and it totally knocked me for 6. Some of the others have been shocks but nothing like that. I think not helped by the casual way my mother broke it to me over breakfast.

Caroline Aherne was terribly sad. And Maya Angelou in a different way, a very old lady but the end of an incredible force of nature.

Fevertree · 27/05/2022 21:31

Peaches Geldof made me cry so much. I was on mat leave with my pfb and she seemed to parent a lot like me, natural term breastfeeding and Co sleeping. I was so upset at the thought of her little one alone in the house with a dead mummy.

Michael Jackson, I had tickets to his shows and was so excited, I felt like I had waited my whole life to see him.

I've never cried about a celebrity death but it always gets to me when I hear the Avicii lyrics "One day, you'll leave this world behind, so live a life you will remember" - he really did.

Also this 😰

The death of reality star Nikki Grahame really really upset me . That poor vulnerable girl fought so hard , the mother in me just wanted to wrap my arms around her and tell her it would be ok . So brave of her to open up and even allow pictures to be posted which were beyond shocking , but also showed her grit and determination to try and get help , so sad . RIP Nikki .

Yes this! I'm remembering a lot reading these posts. This one was so sad poor nikki

ThomasinaGallico · 27/05/2022 21:54

Richard Griffiths, purely because I’d seen him in Equus on the West End some years before, and I realised what a privilege it was to have seen an actor like him play live. Never again. ☹️

MyneighbourisTotoro · 27/05/2022 22:02

I still cry over Chester Bennington :(

kitcat15 · 27/05/2022 22:11

Helen McCory and Emma Chambers ( Alice from Vicar of Dibley)

Frazzledmummy123 · 27/05/2022 22:36

Heath Ledger, I was a huge fan. I loved him in 10 Things I Hate About You and watched most things he was in, including an early TV show he was in called Roar. I was devastated, and also makes 10 Things I Hate About You (one of my favourite films) not the same anymore.

SpaceJamtart · 27/05/2022 22:43

People do get upset about famous people dying so its not uncommon.

I do find it weird when people are very public about it (not on something like this thread, I mean like twitter etc)
it does remind me of what Robin Williams daughter posted, about it being hard to be forced to hear the world sharing all these condolences and memories of her dad, and having her memories of him being buried under other peoples, and feeling like a roadside memorial.

BogRollBOGOF · 27/05/2022 22:46

Terry Wogan still makes me emotional. His style of broadcasting was a gentle conversation between him, you and The Other Listener. He presented his interview show through my earlier childhood, and reprised his breakfast show months after my dad died and I miss that paternal voice who was a regular companion through the secondary school years and through years of travelling to work.

He actually read out my first ever email on air. I was officially a Premature TOG. Paul Walters his producer was a sad loss too and a bit of spark went with him.

I also related to Diana's death. I'm around William's age, and had lost a parent suddenly at around Harry's age. I really felt for them because it dredged up my own grief.

January 2016 was an absolute bastard of a month of depriving us of so much talent. So many of the people listed in this thread went within that month.

Doggyfish · 27/05/2022 22:46

Hard to believe some of these people mentioned are really dead.

SunflowerSmith · 27/05/2022 22:48

I've never cried over a celebrity, I was sad about Paul Ritter and Sean Locke.
I didn't know Terry Wogan had died until this thread and after a quick Google see he's been gone for 6 years!

Leobynature · 27/05/2022 22:54

I was never a big fan but I felt really sad when Michael Jackson died. I B felt he bc was around my whims life, my parents constantly played his music when I was growing up bad I felt it was an end of an era.

Lochjeda · 27/05/2022 22:56

George Michael was a shock and Caroline Flack was horrific and I still find it such a sad loss.

Mrsjayy · 27/05/2022 22:59

I remember being affected by Chaswick Boseman it was so sad and for days I was thinking about it even now I get choked up.

DialSquare · 27/05/2022 23:01

Steve Marriott of the Small Faces and Humble Pie. I've been a fan of the Small Faces as long as I can remember. He died in a fire in 1991. It broke my heart. His voice never received the recognition it deserved. RIP Steve. Never forgotten

Justkeeppedaling · 27/05/2022 23:09

Terry Wogan. I bloomin loved that man.

XenoBitch · 27/05/2022 23:11

Chester Bennington. Linkin Park were a huge part of my formative years.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 27/05/2022 23:14

At Kissmylittleass The same here Princess Diana and was living in London at the time and went to Kensington Palace and never saw anything like it..my own mum rang me at 7am to tell me the sad news and also went to Harrods. Also George Michael so very sad as far too young and talented and Diana just coming into her own.
Also Michael K. Williams from The Wire, so young and such a great actor.
Stephen Gately also so young and something not right with his death at all.

Caroline Flack more recently really made me sad as she was such a young woman. So many passed away well before their time...

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 27/05/2022 23:17

After reading all the replies so many poor Niki Graham and Chester what a fantastic performer and writer. Poor Peaches Geldof the same way as her mum that was just shocking and she seemed to be doing so well and was a great mum.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 27/05/2022 23:18

Dolores O'Riordan from The Cranberries as grew up with her music especially Zombie remember singing and dancing to it. She was abused as a child and it haunted her but a fantastic song writer and had such great success.

Ginger1982 · 27/05/2022 23:27

I think it's normal to feel a bit sad when someone you admire dies, but I find public anguish/hysteria (as with Princess Diana) a bit 🙄
