Have you ever been really affected by the death of a celebrity? Is this normal?

I feel so heartbroken at Ray Liotta passing away. My husband and friends must think I'm crackers but I genuinely have been fond of him for years and years. I always hoped I would meet him one day and believed

Only if I’d met them and they were nice. I’d met Andy Fletcher, from Depeche Mode who died yesterday, and he was lovely. It made me sad that he’d died so young.

But I can’t get that upset over someone I’ve not met.

George Michael, Terry Wogan & Victoria Wood. Sobbed for days at those. Childhood memories of all of them 🙁

soundsofthesixties · 27/05/2022 10:20

Victoria Wood, she had so much more to give.

Prince, I had seen him live and was a massive fan. The day he died I finished work early and went to go onto the Org (Prince fan website/chat room) and it was down and I knew something was going on, then saw the news online. Within minutes I was getting texts and calls from friends, it was so surreal. 💜

Shane Warne was a shocker. I remember when he made his debut, stunning stuff. He was full of life and fun (yes, there was that odd Elizabeth Hurley dalliance). And John Le Carre, the end of an era.

EspeciallyDistracted · 27/05/2022 10:26

Freddie Mercury for me, it had been increasingly obvious he was very, very unwell but he had only coming out as having AIDS the day before. I remember crying my eyes out. The song Love of My Life still sets me off. Seeing Queen at Wembley was one of the highlights of my life.

Redbluelellow · 27/05/2022 10:27

That's what make me so upset that I'll never get the opportunity to meet him now and I've wanted to for the last 25 years 😢😢

Heath Ledger.
Wasn't a fan particularly, just felt really really sad afterwards.

spiderlight · 27/05/2022 10:29

Robin Williams and Paul Ritter both really, really upset me.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 27/05/2022 10:31

Robin Williams and Paul Ritter. I can't pin point why beyond the obvious that they were fantastic actors, but I think... it has to do with them seemingly like genuinely really good blokes? They both came across as caring and thoughtful, I think that's why it stings so much.

TibetanTerrah · 27/05/2022 10:32

Rik Mayall. First saw him in Drop Dead Fred as a child and then watched everything he'd been in, from the New Statesman to Bottom. I just loved him.

Basilbrushgotfat · 27/05/2022 10:33

Peaches Geldof. Never remotely interested by her but it was heartbreakingly tragic that she died so young, leaving behind two small children. I didn't cry but I was surprised at how dreadfully saddened I was by her death. It was just a such a waste.

KookaburraSits · 27/05/2022 10:37

Paul Ritter.
Sarah Harding. Just way, way too young and everytime I hear Girls Aloud now that's what I think of. Fucking cancer.

FMSucks · 27/05/2022 10:38

Heath Ledger here too. Was heavily pregnant at the time and was so upset over him. Such a talent and gone way too soon.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 27/05/2022 10:40

Alan Rickman. It still makes me so sad when I think about it

Oblomov22 · 27/05/2022 10:45

No celebrity death has really bothered me. Is that odd?

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 27/05/2022 10:45

Kurt Cobain, Heath Ledger and Anthony Bourdain, I cried for ages with all three.

Same :( I remember late afternoon the news coming in on various FB sites that a fatality was found at Paisley park. It wasn't confirmed for a few hours but I knew :( So glad I got to see him live 11 times.

HerbErtlinger · 27/05/2022 10:51

Alan Rickman here too. Just heartbroken.

And Patrick Swayze. Very very sad

yellowsuninthesky · 27/05/2022 10:53

I wouldn't say I sobbed, but I was quite shocked and upset when Angharad Rees and Elizabeth Sladen died, they were both so young.

romany4 · 27/05/2022 10:57

Freddie Mercury.
I was absolutely heartbroken. I have been a Queen fan all my life.n
I still adore him

SpiderVersed · 27/05/2022 10:58

Jim Henson. That man created my childhood. I was hiding in the curtains from Cookie Monster’s voice when I was 2, grew up with Sesame Street and the Muppets.

Douglas Adams - again, so soon. I couldn’t believe it.

Carrie Fisher. Wonderful Carrie.

SenecaFallsRedux · 27/05/2022 11:02

For me it was Robin Williams. Besides being a huge fan and loving his work all the way back to Mork and Mindy, there was a quality of intimacy with the audience in his television appearances on talk shows and other venues that is hard to explain. I'm in the US so I often saw these appearances, and I felt almost that I knew him. I still mourn him, especially knowing now about the pain he suffered in his last years.

Montgomerymmoose · 27/05/2022 11:09

Dermot Morgan , Caroline Aherne , Rik Mayall.

blobby10 · 27/05/2022 11:09

A bit like Oblomov22 most celebrity deaths leave me feeling a bit 'oh dear that's a pity' but never crying - after all we only know their public persona, not what they are like in real life.

However Princess Diana's funeral affected me and I cried a lot that day - I think because I had a year old son and was very newly pregnant with #2 and the thought of her two boys growing up without her really hit home.

Terry Wogan's death made me very sad because I had grown up listening to him on the radio then watching him on Eurovision and Blankety Blank and I loved his voice.
