Have you ever been really affected by the death of a celebrity? Is this normal?

I feel so heartbroken at Ray Liotta passing away. My husband and friends must think I'm crackers but I genuinely have been fond of him for years and years. I always hoped I would meet him one day and believed

Victoria Wood and Caroline Aherne.

Same :( I remember late afternoon the news coming in on various FB sites that a fatality was found at Paisley park. It wasn't confirmed for a few hours but I knew :( So glad I got to see him live 11 times.

11 times, wow! I saw him twice and was going to the Paris gig that was cancelled because of the terror attack, sadly he never got to reschedule. (Nice username by the way Smile)

Steve Irwin. :(
I remember a radio station suggest we turn our headlights on in remembrance. Watching all the cars lights turn on in broad daylight was such a surreal moment. Very emotional.

Yes, it’s normal, especially if it’s someone whose work you’ve adored for years. People like Prince and David Bowie bloody deserved the huge outpourings of grief their deaths prompted. I felt very bloody sad when Mark Lanegan died recently.

And I know my friend, and millions of others, were genuinely distraught when Terry Pratchett died.

Some people scoff ‘hmph, but you didn’t even know them’. So what! It’s okay to admire a stranger and to love them for the work they put out into the world.

I was very upset when Anthony Bourdain died. I'd gone through a run of watching his programmes every day and, when I watched one on New Orleans, it inspired me the following day to book a trip there myself.
Then he was just...gone.

EscapeTheCastle · 27/05/2022 11:20

Yes, Terry Wogan for me.

Miss seeing and hearing him very much.

I've recently been watching "Wogan the best of" which you can find on iplayer.
I was too young in the 80's to fully appreciate what a warm and professional interviewer he was. Later on I would listen to his morning show on radio 2, it made me so happy.

FuckingNoise · 27/05/2022 11:20

Michael Jackson. I was unhealthily devastated. Absolutely massive fan and if you'd seen how many phone calls / texts I received on that Thursday night you'd have thought he was my Uncle. I cried for most of 2009.

Eranzer · 27/05/2022 11:21

Absolutely gutted about Ray Liotta too. I've loved him since I was a young teen. I know what you mean, I feel weird that I'm so upset about it - I never have, and never was going to meet the man!

Alan Rickman's death made me really cry too.

SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am · 27/05/2022 11:28

Wogan.

Never before or since, but I was already missing listening to him in the mornings, and hearing his colleagues on the radio struggling to hold back tears - from the travel presenters to news readers to producers tipped me over the edge and I had tears running down my face and nearly had to pull over for a moment to collect myself.

George Harrison, he was my Beatle.

No he's not, he's mine 😛

Greyarea12 · 27/05/2022 11:29

Caroline flack got to me. The circumstances of her death were, and still are, just awful.

Furrbabymama87 · 27/05/2022 11:30

Not really a celebrity but the youtuber Emily Hartridge. She was just so full of life and then the next minute, gone. Just devastating.

AlviarinAesSedai · 27/05/2022 11:31

Rik Mayall and Sir Terry Pratchett.

Worldgonecrazy · 27/05/2022 11:32

Ayrton Senna.

stuntbubbles · 27/05/2022 11:33

Patrick Swayze. It still seems impossible to me.

And William Goldman and Joan Didion; two of my favourite writers. Both a fair old age so not a surprise, but still a shock.

LucyLocketsBlackCat · 27/05/2022 11:37

Terry Pratchett

Aposterhasnoname · 27/05/2022 11:39

Alan Rickman. I met him once and he was lovely. Such a loss.

BilboBagBin · 27/05/2022 11:43

David Bowie. I was heartbroken. I've loved him since I was 15, I'm now 60. I saw him in concert many times. He died far too young.

I can’t believe David Guest is no longer with us either!

Joking aside, I miss Bowie but I feel like he got to do all the things he wanted before the end with his final album and all. Felt like he was shining down afterwards too. Of course, I might feel differently if I was a mega, mega fan.

I was gutted when Wes Craven passed away as he was a hero of mine and I too hoped we would meet some day. Still not quite over it.

Cried when Rickman died too.

I think these people represent something in a time in our lives and it is ok to mourn for both them as people and the loss of what they represented to us like Princess Diana.

FloodTheBathroom · 27/05/2022 11:43

Cried my eyes out when Maya Angelou died. I was heavily pregnant but she was just so brilliant and inspirational.

SameToo · 27/05/2022 11:43

Meatloaf. I cried. No one writes, sings or performs like him.

Varietyplaza · 27/05/2022 11:43

Worst for me was Taylor Hawkins, just such a shock and sudden we were going to see them when they came.

But others I was devastated over were Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Terry Pratchett, Prince, George Michael, Alan Rickman and Kobe Bryant.

BilboBagBin · 27/05/2022 11:45

Also, Ray Liotta was brilliant. He was won of those actors that seemed to be in everything. Personally, I will remember his performance in Hannibal (one of the hardest to watch/most shocking scenes in cinema history) Feel better op Flowers

BilboBagBin · 27/05/2022 11:46

*one 🤦🏼‍♀️

iklboo · 27/05/2022 11:46

Terry Pratchett & George Michael for me.

Sillystripytail · 27/05/2022 11:46

A lot of the ones mentioned but mostly for me, Chester Bennington. I'm not over it if I'm honest. Still can't listen to Linkin Park without sobbing. I can't bear the fact that he went through so much and it's all there in his lyrics. It's so painful to listen to.
