Have you ever been really affected by the death of a celebrity? Is this normal?

I feel so heartbroken at Ray Liotta passing away. My husband and friends must think I'm crackers but I genuinely have been fond of him for years and years. I always hoped I would meet him one day and believed

Well many many people got extremely upset about Kurt Cobain and Princess Diana, so you’re certainly not alone.

The only celeb death that shook me was Heath Ledger. He looks a lot like my son and has similar interests and personality. I can absolutely imagine my son ending the same way and so Heath’s death haunts me a little as a reminder that it isn’t going to be enough that at my son is gorgeous and clever and talented, he also has to be emotionally robust and stay away from drugs etc and I don’t know if I can help him with that.

Dermot Morgan (Father Ted) was really sad. He was just 45.
Was just watching Ardal O'Hanlon being interviewed this morning on Sky as he's brought a new book out, and some of the best episodes were mentioned - the Eurosong episode and "My lovely horse"!

DameHelena · 27/05/2022 15:20

Heath Ledger. In terms of his acting he was a genuine original and always surprising. So young. What a waste.

And Alexander McQueen. Some years later I went to the Savage Beauty show at the V&A and was in tears. His work was just a cut above everyone else's and he had so much more still to show us.

weightedblanketofshame · 27/05/2022 15:30

Sarah Harding. It was so sad to hear she regretted not going to the doctors sooner because she was scared. There's never a "right" time to die but she seemed like a very kind and bubbly person who should have lived a much longer life.

Benjispruce4 · 27/05/2022 15:34

I was sad about Sarah Harding too. I often feel glad that those stars that die young have lived a full on life in such a few years. Must be some comfort to their family.

CPL593H · 27/05/2022 15:34

John Lennon was such an utter shock, people really could not believe anyone would shoot a Beatle. Diana, again a shock and terribly sad.

Lifetime fan of Bowie. I just stared at the headline that morning, didn't seem real or possible, somehow. It was good to learn how much control he'd had over his last months and that he was able to do it on his own terms.

googleyourheartout · 27/05/2022 15:45

Philip Seymour Hoffman. I wasn't even a fan of his but his death really affected me. He had fought his addiction successfully for years and then to succumb and die because of it leaving a loving wife and children. I honestly can't really explain it properly. I still tear up thinking about it.

easyday · 27/05/2022 15:55

I was most upset at John Lennon. And Princess Di. Partially because they were so young and the deaths were tragic.
My sister worked on a film he was in once and wasn't impressed, though his co actors seem to genuinely care for him.

AlphaAlpha · 27/05/2022 15:57

Keith Flint (Prodigy) and Taylor Hawkins.
Shed more than a tear at both.

seperatedmum · 27/05/2022 16:05

Colin McRae and his little son and friend. no words 😶

Nat6999 · 27/05/2022 16:07

George Michael I loved him from being 17 & Wham, I saw them several times including The Final at Wembley & then when he went solo, it shocked me when I saw the announcement on Christmas Day. Dennis Waterman, I'm a massive Sweeney, Minder & New Tricks fan & it didn't feel like it was his time to die.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 27/05/2022 16:17

Terry Pratchett and Diana Wynne Jones, I miss looking forward to a new book coming out. They were truly magical writers.

KatherineJaneway · 27/05/2022 16:19

I have. Michael Jackson's passing hit me very hard. I still get tears when I think of Prince passing.

AutumnOrange · 27/05/2022 16:24

The guy from To Buy or Not to buy and the bloke from Smart (kids programme) it’s awful I can’t remember their names but I remember at the time being shocked and I cried. Not because I was massive fans of theirs particularly but more that it resonated with me because my mum had died suddenly.
Terry Wogan dying gutted me - he made me laugh out loud.
Sarah Harding and Jade Goody - again not because I was a particular fan but because they were so young and also because they hadn’t always behaved great and they only redeemed themselves (or seemed to) in the public eye by dying.
I am dreading any of Take That dying! Such a massive part of my youth.

HideousKinky · 27/05/2022 16:27

Victoria Wood - she meant a lot to women of my generation.
I saw her live once at the Royal Albert Hall and you could feel the love & warmth in the room for her

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 27/05/2022 16:30

@NannyOggsWhiskyStash I was going to say the exact same two, for the exact same reason.

I cried, both times. I actually had to go and sit in the loo at work to compose myself when I heard about Sir Terry.

Horriblewoman · 27/05/2022 16:32

Taylor Hawkins by a country mile, I'm still gutted.

Prince, Heath and Chris Cornell to a lesser but still significant level. Heath was so young and achieved so much in his short career.

beguilingeyes · 27/05/2022 16:37

I remember people crying in the street when Lennon was murdered. It still seems a horrible waste. Especially since seeing Get Back
Freddie was mine really, my first concert was Queen in 1977.
Victoria Wood, Amy Winehouse.
Richard Beckinsale devastated me at the time. He was only 32.

ladydimitrescu · 27/05/2022 16:45

Eddie Guerrero genuinely broke my heart.

bigTillyMint · 27/05/2022 16:45

John Lennon - he was my favourite Beatle from about 5. I remember hearing it on my little yellow transistor radio on bed, and then going into school and everyone was in complete shock.

ladydimitrescu · 27/05/2022 16:46

And Naya Rivera

peony68 · 27/05/2022 17:11

The death of reality star Nikki Grahame really really upset me . That poor vulnerable girl fought so hard , the mother in me just wanted to wrap my arms around her and tell her it would be ok . So brave of her to open up and even allow pictures to be posted which were beyond shocking , but also showed her grit and determination to try and get help , so sad . RIP Nikki .

JenniferBarkley · 27/05/2022 17:17

ladydimitrescu · 27/05/2022 16:46

And Naya Rivera

Gosh yes, that was awful, the circumstances were truly heartbreaking.

BeyondMyWits · 27/05/2022 17:19

Victoria Wood and Linda Smith. Joined now by Sean Lock... my favourite comedians... all a bit silly... but so sadly missed.

Also, purely because of memories of watching crappy kids shows on the Disney/nickelodeon channels when snuggled up on a Saturday morning... Cameron Boyce. Died so young. He was always just a cheeky little boy in Jessie.

LoveLarry · 27/05/2022 17:25

I didn't think anyone until I read some of these posts

Paul Ritter. He was always my "embarrassing crush" and I recall now howling my way through the FND special
