Highlights:
All families can now keep the 200 quid energy payment, no longer repayment based. This will be topped up to £400.
Low income families to get £650 straight into bank account.
(Non means tested) disabled benefit recipients to get £150.
All in all some will receive total of £1,200.
Funded by windfall tax.

Hmm, I'll be a bit annoyed if every unemployed person gets an extra 650 on top of the 400, not going to lie.

You're thoroughly unpleasant aren't you? What difference does it make to you if someone can have a bit of help towards making their life easier?
I bet you're of these who thinks all unemployed people spend their oh so high benefits on large TVs, acrylic nails and alcohol.

RaspberryToo · 26/05/2022 14:42

@BensonStabler Why don't you switch to UC then? This would be odd if you don't get awarded it given people who are on the UC version of what you are are going to be awarded it...

What about those of who now work from home, so have increased heating/electricity costs with no option to return to the office full time?

You can claim the work from home tax rebate / hand out from HRMC - cannot remember what the exact name is.

I do claim it and I’m still no better off, it’s minimal compared to the more than 100% rise in energy bills and escalating fuel costs

@BensonStabler the £650 is one payment split into two. I don’t understand why you think it’s unfair though . Like myself you get pip a non means tested benefit because our partners/husbands incomes support us. We are not living in ESA or pip only are we.

Can you point me to where it said non means tested benefit recipients will get £150, because the way I understood it is that this only applies to disabled pensioners who are in receipt of pension credit - so not really non means tested. Not sure if I’ve misunderstood.

Bit of a kick in the teeth for young people working 50+ hours on minimum wage trying to save deposit to see others just given free cash.

On the other hand, I won't ever be able to buy a home - as far as i know, a bank wouldn't give me a mortgage (even if i had a deposit), being solely in receipt of PIP/ESA.

Swings and roundabouts.

Might as well give up work then…

How helpful and utterly tone deaf.
I was forced to give up work in 2017. Our household won't qualify for this "help" but we still won't cover our bills.
If you fancy giving up work I'll happily trade places if you also fancy being a full time unpaid Carer 24/7.
There's no leave and fuck all support but hey you'll just fine I'm sure.
You may apply for carers allowance at the awesome rate of £67 a week but be warned all of that will likely go on services your local authority should be providing but can't due to cuts.
Knock yourself out with your shitty entitled posts

Sirzy · 26/05/2022 14:44

At least they have also stated that they will be raising benefits in line with inflation next year too. The way they got out of applying the triple lock this year was shocking.

Belephant · 26/05/2022 14:44

caringcarer · 26/05/2022 14:32

This is actually very divisive. No idea why disabled people should get less than pensioners, and unemployed get more than both groups. Carers no help for them at all. Fairer to give zero vat on utility bills and make fuel cheaper so workers can afford to get to work.

Agree with this. It's also going to cause resentment from those struggling but not eligible for anything due to not being on UC. I'm one of those, we just earn a little too much as a family but struggling money-wise atm. Our heating will certainly not see much use this winter.

Obviously I know that other people need the support more than we do, and I really don't begrudge them that at all. I also like to keep my feelings focused on the people at the top rather than those with even less than me. But I think that there will be lots of people in my situation who can't get past the feeling of struggling with no help, and I worry that we're in for another cultural wave of nasty benefit bashing sentiment Sad

It'll be for council tax bands A-D so directly to you.

Good to hear that. Thanks for the reply.

I see some people have said that if you’re on ESA you will get the £650 payments. The list i read of the qualifying benefits never mentioned ESA.

There are two different types of ESA, I imagine it will be the contribution based ESA that will qualify. Personally I’m not on that.

Does anyone have a link to the official list of qualifying benefits. I read it in a paper, but don’t have it to hand anymore.

No those on ESA that get it are those on income related. It those that are means tested, which contribution ESA isn't.

Might as well give up work then…

I've heard it all now, please start a blog on how far the one off payment will go Grin

Alliumpoppyrose · 26/05/2022 14:47

Whilst some will legitimately need the £650 many feckless lay abouts will be loving this.

May be the government should be using this payment to pay off or part pay their arrears on housing and bills first. We will still see plenty blow this and complain they are in arrears.

Libertybear80 · 26/05/2022 14:47

Once again the working pay the price! Absolutely nothing to help!

Lightning020 · 26/05/2022 14:44

I think you've got confused. There's no further council tax rebate, just the £400 energy grant that goes straight to your energy account.

GodspeedJune · 26/05/2022 14:47

MarshaBradyo · 26/05/2022 14:40

It is needed for many though, don’t you think?

What’s really needed is for these excessive costs to be brought down. This support is being funded by the excessive profits made by the energy companies- absolutely farcical.

These measures are nothing more than a sticking plaster. We’ll all be screwed again by next year.

letsnotdothat · 26/05/2022 14:48

So the squeezed middle get little help then in comparison to the low paid or jobless. I get a bit annoyed by it tbh, we pay more tax now and get little to no assistance ever. We’re not eligible for anything at all, no FSM or help with uniform/school trips/school transport. Little help with childcare costs either. With this we’ll most likely be eligible for the lowest amount of help, it’s always the way.

Behave yourself, how many people claiming benefits are 'feckless layabouts'?

Better than nothing.

There will always be outcry if something or nothing

But if I was receiving the extra I know what I’d prefer.

It only goes to pensioners currently receiving the Warm Home Discount, which is only given to those on low incomes or who get Pension Credit. It won't go to them all.

Yes it will. It is going to those who receive winter fuel payment, which goes to any household with a pensioner.

Warm Home discount is something different.

Youaremysunshine14 · 26/05/2022 14:50

Wheretheskyisblue · 26/05/2022 14:40

It goes to all those receiving the Winter Fuel Payment which is all households with at least one person of pension age
www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-61592496

My mistake. And theirs, I think. Lots of pensioners are very well off (my parents included) and won't need it. But I guess it's too complicated to means test.

Just papering over the cracks, we shouldn’t be grateful for rebates and charity. The cap should never have been lifted and definitely shouldn’t be rising again.

transformandriseup · 26/05/2022 14:51

Day after day there are threads on here with people talking about working the minimum hours to claim the maximum benefit help

Are there? I haven't seen these but I could be on the wrong boards.
