Oh God, sooooo many but the stand out ones are:-

The Jinny at Finmory series by the amazing Patricia Leitch and The Water Horse which was brilliant

The Jill series by Ruby Ferguson (@seashaken if you’re on fb check out Jane Badger books)

The Changeover - Margaret Mahy

Stranger With My Face - Lois Duncan (still terrifying)

The Dark is Rising Sequence - Susan Cooper (NEVER watch the horrific film version
🤬)

Also pretty much any pony book especially the P-T sisters and Monica Edwards’ Punchbowl and Romney Marsh series.

I’m sure there’s more…….

The 'Ramona' series by Beverly Cleary.

Me too. I adored these. My daughter is 7 so I think I'll get them for her next birthday.

Branleuse · 24/05/2022 21:00

Judy Blume

NerrSnerr · 24/05/2022 21:01

I also loved the Famous 5 and the Adventure series. I remember The Island Bus by Elizabeth Beresford, I still have my copy. I enjoyed Point Horrors and Adrian Mole as a teen. By the time I was about 13-14 I moved on to Stephen King.

MushroomHunter · 24/05/2022 21:01

I really enjoyed “The babysitters club” by Ann Martin. I would stay up all night reading them.

I can’t really remember any other books I read, awful memory!

@ChristineCagney11 😂 this may be the way I go too! dc would say 'too late' 🤣

BreadmanAndCake · 24/05/2022 21:05

I remember getting a book simply called 'Halitosis' out of the library over and over. It was a kids book about someone (or an animal) with bad breath (obviously).
Mog books, which I now love reading to my two boys.

Then famous five and secret seven, all dutifully searched for at charity shops. I still love them - I listen to the audiobooks when I'm going to sleep for a bit of comfort.

St Clare's and Malory Towers - I was given my Mums childhood copies which I read over and over.

Of course Harry Potter - still obsessed.

Jacqueline Wilson, the Girls series especially.

Also Louise Rennisons Georgia Nicholson Books.

the80sweregreat · 24/05/2022 21:06

The Jennings books!
I loved them.

soundsofthesixties · 24/05/2022 21:06

The Secret Garden and Black Beauty were my favourites.

GlitchStitch · 24/05/2022 21:10

Sweet Valley Twins/ High
All the Enid Blyton boarding school books, must have read the Naughtiest Girl series several times as an adult.

One of my favourite books was Cora Ravenwing by Gina Wilson. Nobody has ever heard of it though.

StellaOlivetti · 24/05/2022 21:11

Just William by Richmal Crompton. So funny!

Chelsea26 · 24/05/2022 21:14

Oh my - this thread is lovely! I have read (I think) every book mentioned above! Loved reading, still do…

surprised only one mention of Michelle Magorian and Goodnight Mr Tom and Back Home…

The series that hasn’t been mentioned that I also loved I can’t remember the name of but it was about a student nurse (St Marks is suddenly ringing a bell…) Does anyone remember?

I had forgotten all about Jinny and her ‘chestnut Arab mare’ - I was desperate to steal a horse like she did!

Best Famous Five book was ‘5 go to smugglers top’ IMHO - I loved them but I did get annoyed at Anne being such a drip and constantly washing the dishes in a stream while the rest of them did cool stuff - George was my hero though and I so so wanted a dog like Timmy!

Chelsea26 · 24/05/2022 21:17

Also to the poster who asked about adventure books for adults - have you read any Wilbur Smith? Particularly the Courtney’s of Africa series?? They have it all!

Monsoon particularly is swashbuckling at its very best!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 24/05/2022 21:17

Point romance.
point horror.
Sweet Valley Twins/High
Judy Blume.
Paula Danziger.
Charlotte’s Web.
The Secret Garden.

Reiningitin · 24/05/2022 21:18

All of Enid Blyton's stuff but especially Malory Towers. Loved the Anne of Green Gables books and also the Trebizon series by Anne Digby.

Cuwins · 24/05/2022 21:22

So anyones kids still like the Mallory towers etc books? Or are they too old fashioned now?
Hoping to introduce my daughter to them when she is older (she is 3m now so a bit young 😂) and the chalet school ones but they are even more old fashioned

ConsuelaHammock · 24/05/2022 21:23

Black beauty and Heidi were my two favourite books as a child. I also loved The Famous Five and Secret Seven series.

StellaOlivetti · 24/05/2022 21:23

Was it Sue Barton, student nurse, @Chelsea26 ?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/05/2022 21:23

I could never choose a favourite - I read SO MUCH. Most of the authors and books mentioned here, tbh.

Random other books/authors I liked:
