I loved A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett (still re-read it now as an adult)

Me too. I still love it now and have it on audible to listen to over and over again. My 17yo dd loves it too.

I also loved Noel Streatfield, especially White Boots. And All About The Bullerby Children by Astrid Lindgren.

Bettyboop3 · 24/05/2022 20:17

I too loved everything Enid Blyton wrote but also enjoyed The lion, the witch and the wardrobe enough to read the series again as an adult. Ooh and Winnie the pooh!

Cuwins · 24/05/2022 20:17

I had forgotten about Noel streatfield loved them too- particuarly the ice skating one, can't remember what it was called

MargaretThursday · 24/05/2022 20:18

So many:

Yes to Enid Blyton
Noel Streatfield
Monica Edwards
Malcolm Saville
Geoffrey Trease
Narnia series
Elizabeth Goudge

And others... Can't pick a favourite.

As a pre schooler I insisted on borrowing 'dogger' from the library so many times my mum eventually brought a copy!
As an older child I loved Enid blyton secret seven but couldn't stand famous five! Also loved the Mallory towers series.
Then as a teen I loved the chalet school books- still have the complete set collected over many years, mostly 2nd hand and some were quite expensive to buy.

And yy to Malory Towers and the Chalet School books.

I liked the Naughtiest Girl in the school series as well. And also the Faraway Tree series when I was a bit younger.

Mumwantingtogetitright · 24/05/2022 20:19

Oh yes, Narnia, of course!

And Heidi!

I also liked Pollyanna!

ILIWYS · 24/05/2022 20:20

I absolutely loved Enid Blyton too, especially the Faraway Tree, Malory Towers and the Adventure series. But my all time favourite book was The Wind on the Moon by Eric Linklater.

Mumwantingtogetitright · 24/05/2022 20:21

Ah, yes! Anne of Green Gables. I especially liked Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island.

Loved the Secret Island series by Enid Blyton too.

"White Boots" is the original name, but I think it's been re-released as "Skating Shoes".

Mumwantingtogetitright · 24/05/2022 20:23

And yes, Winnie the Pooh. Also loved Paddington

The Mr Men were great. I loved Mr Bounce!

sofiathe2nd · 24/05/2022 20:23

The Jill pony books by Ruby Ferguson, they're currently being rereleased so reading them again.

Ballet Shoes, Anne of Green Gables and Black Beauty

OnlyLosersTakeTheBus · 24/05/2022 20:24

KM Peyton

Cuwins · 24/05/2022 20:24

Yes I'm sure it was white boots when I read it.
When I was a younger child I loved Winnie the Pooh and my naughty little sister too. Also the family from one end street.
Also I was a teen when the first Harry Potter books were released and loved them.

bumblebeessarecool · 24/05/2022 20:26

I am the cheese was also great. All the Famous Five, the wishing chair series, The chronicles of Narnia,

ElephantGrey101 · 24/05/2022 20:29

I also loved E Nesbit and Charlotte Sometimes.

I love the Butterfly Lion by Micheal Morpurgo it is so beautifully written. Butterflies only have short lives. They flower and flutter for only a few glorious weeks then they die.

I also loved Eva Ibbotson, Journey to the River Sea and the Star of Kazan.

Does any remember Moondial by Helen Cresswell? About a girl who goes back in time?

Triffid1 · 24/05/2022 20:33

Yes to all Enid Blyton - Loved Famous Five the most, but also Faraway Tree.

Yes Yes to Frances Hodgson Burnett - the Little Princess is my favourite but loved The Secret Garden too and also Little Lord Fauntleroy.

My all time favourite book as a young child was The Ordinary Princess by MM Kaye. I absolutely loved it, and still do.

Veralil · 24/05/2022 20:36

I loved Little Women, Ballet shoes, The Painted garden, the Jennings books, Twins at St Clares, Mallory towers. A little Princess, Milly molly mandy, the Family from one end street , loved the little Ladybird books on all sorts of subjects (still do !) Stig of the Dump. I have tried so hard to remember a book from school days and all I can recall is a passage about a girl going back to boarding school by bus on a sunday night. It stuck with me as it was such a beautiful . wistful description of the evening and the feeling of sadness at going back to school but the beauty of
nature surrounding her on her journey. Wish I knew what it was !

Veralil · 24/05/2022 20:38

converseandjeans · 24/05/2022 20:38

My Mum also passed on a book called Jill & Judy which I read several times.
