@paddingtonstares - I'd forgotten about Mistletoe Farm, I loved that one (and think there was a sequel). I think one of the cousins had nightmares about a fire and slept next to a noisy boiler or something. And there was a stroppy pony called Bodie I might have to find a copy.

I also loved all the St Clare's books - they all had to know how to make a proper fire in the grate and share their tuck boxes!

Riverlee · 24/05/2022 21:53

If you a Mallory Towers fan, then you must watch the Mallory Towers series on iplayer. I absolutely loved it (and can’t understand why it wasn’t shown on BBC 1 on a Sunday evening).

.Mallory towers

Lots of favourites already mentioned, but can I add to the mix (all books currently sitting on my bookshelf)
Topsy and Tim
Teddy Robinson
Milly Molly Mandy
All Mary - Gwynedd Rae
Gobbolina the Witches Cat
Grey Owl (not strictly childrens book, but I found them fascinating)

I think there were about 3 in total in that series

Riverlee · 24/05/2022 21:56

The Very Hungry Caterpillar - I know this is still around today, but it’s the book I probably got most out from the mobile library as a child.

Mumwantingtogetitright · 24/05/2022 21:56

Goodnight Mr Tom is one that I read as an adult, having been urged to do so by my daughter. It's upsetting but it's a great book.

DD also persuaded me to read the His Dark Materials trilogy - don't think it was around when I was a kid, but my goodness, what a read!

She also loved the Harry Potter books and Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson, as well as all of my old favourites!

I love reading kids books even now. In fact, I'm feeling rather tempted to take to my bed with a book right now!

Mumwantingtogetitright · 24/05/2022 21:57

The owl who was afraid of the dark was another of my favourites growing up!

ShirleyJackson · 24/05/2022 21:57

There was also a book called Daisy, about a teenage girl with a feckless father. She goes to live with a prickly but ultimately kindly aunt after he gets run over.

I adored it, but can find no trace of it anywhere.

Lansonmaid · 24/05/2022 21:57

Enid Blyton - especially the Adventure series, snd the Adventurous Four.

The Chronicles of Narnia - especially The Magicians Nephew.

The Jill pony books, the horse books by Hazel M Peel, also the Three Jays pony books by Pat Smythe.

Swallows and Amazons, Peter Duck, We didn't mean to go to sea and Secret Water by Arthur Ransome.

B flight ( Bruce Carter) - about a young lad who runs away and joins the RFC in the First World War ( my son loved this book too)

Elidor by Alan Garner - very good story but can still scare me now...

elliejjtiny · 24/05/2022 22:30

Just remembered two more, both read in ‘Fourth year juniors’, but I subsequently purchased myself.

Dolphin Crossing
Machine Gunners

Both books set in WWII.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 24/05/2022 23:30

I'm going to add the 'Green Knowe' books by Lucy M. Boston. The house was based on a real place, the Manor at Hemingford Grey - you can visit it, and I'd love to go one day.

Also Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Carlycat · 24/05/2022 23:34

Cuwins · 24/05/2022 20:55

Someone else who loved dogger! Anytime I mention it to anyone they have never heard of it!

Same. Which is weird. Surely its a classic?

I'm reading this thread and say "oh yes. Love this" to myself about nearly every book mentioned. I read so much as a child but struggle to concentrate these days Sad

MrsAvocet · 25/05/2022 00:52

I've just remembered another set of books I loved when I was quite little - the Milly-Molly- Mandy series. I have no idea who wrote them though but I loved them and always wanted a striped dress like the main character had in the illustrations.

AuntTwacky · 25/05/2022 00:58

Alan Garner
Magic
