Ok I'll start, I was a big fan of The Faraway Tree, lots of other Enid Blyton stuff Famous five, wishing chair but that was my favourite, then on to Jack London.
Have fond memories of The 🐅 Tiger that came to tea also.

@ChristineCagney11 - it wasn't a safety colouring book - it was a book with examples and mini stories on each page, but e.g. safe swimming, not accepting sweets from a suspicious looking man (dressed in long raincoat, hat, glasses etc!).

I too recall a few safety films being shown at school - the main one I think (70s?) was train tracks and train running over a child so we were always careful around level crossings.

I still am a bit staggered at how I did survive in 70s as was typical child going off and doing things - parents were around but not always near if you know what I mean!

@GonnaGetGoingReturns
I was a typical 70's child, well where I lived anyway. Get out of the house, but be back for tea.

@ChristineCagney11 - I think most 70s kids were get out of the house (or within reason) but be home for tea!

Jacqueline Wilson. I read all of her books more than once. Bought them for my DD’s but they sadly don’t like her in the same way I did.

I loved Gwen Grant:

Private - Keep out
Knock and wait
One way only

I also loved Talpa, The Story Of A Mole.

@Ghostlygirl
Aww I love the sound of Talpa

Oh, and the Sadler Wells series. Veronica and Sebastian ❤️❤️❤️

Oh yes. Read them avidly, and wrote to Lorna Hill. Got a handwritten letter back, just wish I'd kept it.

My favourite books as an under 8 were Cops and Robbers (Janet and Alan Alberg) and Princess Smartpants (Babette Cole). The illustrations were fabulous in both books. Loads of detail to look at.

Then I got into Famous Five stories and was a mid teen when the Harry Potter's came out.

Was never a big fan of Roald Dahl as a child - I was a bit of a lazy reader tbh. Loved reading them to my DC though.

I adored my DM's falling apart edition of 'The House with the Twisting Passage' by Marion St. John Webb. I keep it in my drawer, wrapped in a fancy pillow case.

I loved The Hobbit. My Year 5 teacher read it aloud to us every Friday afternoon, and I subsequently bought a copy with my pocket money. Still on my shelves.

My DH and I have been reading stories from 'The Adventures of the Muddle-headed Wombat' to DS for years. I had heard of it, but never read it as a child. I think it is an incredibly underrated work. Ruth Park is a NZ born Australian writer who wrote the stories for radio initially, and then turned them into books. She also wrote Playing Beatie Bow, which is wonderful for about 9 and up. I loved it as an 11 year old (and still do.)

I love this thread!
Does anyone remember the Wizard Grimweed series? I remember the books "Potion Commition" and "BIG Trouble" but I'm sure there were more.
Does anyone remember an author called Morris Gleitzman? His books were always based in the UK or Australia or both because he had links to both countries, but usually they were based in Oz. A few of them were adapted for TV in the 90s. My favourite was "The Other Facts of Life."

DavesSpareDeckChair · 29/05/2022 10:18

Just remembered Dick King-Smith! Loved his books (he wrote a lot of them!). I remember reading his autobiography as well, there was a bit when he wrote about fan letters he got from kids who got confused by his name so they often started "Dear Dick-King-Smith" except for one which started with "Dear-Dick-King-Smith".
