Or no one ever talks about them anymore.

I will offer chocolate covered cornflakes, which used to be in high street baker's windows every eater with confectionary eggs atop. A staple home economics recipe, I recall running home from school with a large tin, convinced that I was going to blow everyone's mind with my culinary genius.

And Spam. Like 'corned beef', but the pork version, also in a tin. That curious shape, reminded me of feeding the cat. My DH watches a lot of wild camping/van man stuff in Japan on youtube and it seems to be having a resurgence..

Does anyone remember a sugary drink that came in a tall plastic pink bottle? They were individual and had a little tab on the top that you twisted off so you could drink out of it? Remember them being delicious!

Also, flavoured cheese strings?!

Snugglepumpkin · 19/05/2022 03:51

Ready salted Chip Sticks.

I'm sure they still exist somewhere, but I haven't found any in years.

Polony sausage in the red plastic wrap.
It used to be in every supermarket next to sausage shaped Liver pate.

Both of those seem to have dropped off the face of the earth.

Riva chocolate biscuits also seem to have disappeared & I haven't seen a fruit club biscuit for years.

AnotherCF · 19/05/2022 03:54

Pudding rice. So hard to find on the shops.

Firstinlastout · 19/05/2022 04:30

I was (still am)a massive crisp fan so:
Piglets_hollow pigs
Skydivers-little men on parachutes
Farmer Browns-various animals
Wheelz-big wagon wheels.
Bought from the likes of Kwiksave and FineFare. Also the bags were massive none of this 25g bollocks.
A boiled sweet in a seashell type dish,my mum used to keep the shells and used them as ashtrays!!
And did anyone used to go to the chemist and get an aniseed flavoured twig. They were fuckin horrible but I always used to ask for one when I went with my mum.It was like eating an actual twig ,I don't know what the purpose of them was.😁

catwomando · 19/05/2022 05:22

Does anyone remember (in the 70s or early 80s) frozen mint chocolates?

They were a bit posh and expensive. Like Elizabeth shaw mint creams but frozen and packed in a little tray to make them look like real chocolates.

Maybe a figment of my imagination but I remember them fondly.

catwomando · 19/05/2022 05:25

Oh, and Cresta fizzy drink. It was cloudy and creamy and delicious. It had a polar bear to advertise it 'it's frothy man'.

I loved that. Hate all fizzy drinks now and I suspect it's because they aren't Cresta.

I’d forgotten about marrows. Always a particularly shit dinner night when my mum decided to boil the fuck out of one of those.

speaking of which, nobody ever peels big potatoes, cuts them into three or four pieces and boils them any more. It’s all boiled new potatoes now and has been for at least 30 years (I am not complaining - I love boiled new potatoes and hated those horrible, flavourless, floury lumps of boiled potato than my mum used to serve up (with cod in parsley sauce and reheated frozen runner beans usually. Blehhh).

We regularly have boiled old potatoes at home - all depends on what we’re having for dinner but they’re best with salt and butter added!!

And Lion bar, "A beast of a bar".

I used to love Lion bars and always bought one every day from the school vending machine. I had one a year or so ago and it tasted like cardboard. Ugh.

Do they still sell that reconstituted ham in the shape of a train or bears face? I was always so jealous of friends who had that on their sandwiches and I had to make do with proper ham 😂

I remember these biscuits like jaffa cakes but had a cherry filling and white chocolate on the top. They were lush. We're around for long though

BarbaraofSeville · 19/05/2022 06:35

Just about everything mentioned on this thread, except perhaps toast toppers and ice magic are still available in most supermarkets.

They're less popular and might not taste as nice as you remember, but if you want them, you can buy them.

Sarah Lee used to do a chocolate Danish dessert you cooked in the oven. My memory is probably inflating how glorious it tasted.

Sarah Lee Pecan nut pie… omg with thick cream….

A couple of people have mentioned Mr Men yogurts so I present to you a relic of my childhood - a papier-mâché flowerpot in a Mr Men yogurt tub. Made c1984.

The original twister ice cream lollies. They had chocolate ice cream in the middle and pink and white swirled on the outside. They were called tongue twisters and when the current version came in they were tangle twisters!

upinaballoon · 19/05/2022 07:04

Maple Brazils, a Brazil nut covered with a coffee-coloured hard fondant with a bit of a sheen on it, quite expensive, used to buy four ounces of it in a paper bag for a relation of mine, a long time ago.

Burtons potato puffs

Heinz tinned vegetable salad... make my own but it's not the same.

My mum used to make ( 1970s) a flan consisting of a pre-made spongey flan base which would get drained , tinned mandarin slices put in then the juice used to be mixed with a sachet of 'QuickSet.' ( as I recall.)

Ooooh yes mandarin flan - my mum used to make that, tinned mandarins mixed with orange jelly atop a sponge flan case. Served with evaporated milk!! 😀

Fiendish Feet yoghurts - yoghurts in ‘monster’ pots.

TargusEasting · 19/05/2022 08:01

Aqua Libra (delicious semi-fizzy drink with the taste of passion fruit and other exotics. It worked because it wasn’t sugary and the flavours were natural).

St Francis (a blend of wine, brandy and soda I think - was only around for about two years).

Both from the late 1980s.
