Or no one ever talks about them anymore.

I will offer chocolate covered cornflakes, which used to be in high street baker's windows every eater with confectionary eggs atop. A staple home economics recipe, I recall running home from school with a large tin, convinced that I was going to blow everyone's mind with my culinary genius.

And Spam. Like 'corned beef', but the pork version, also in a tin. That curious shape, reminded me of feeding the cat. My DH watches a lot of wild camping/van man stuff in Japan on youtube and it seems to be having a resurgence..

Yes to so many of these. The frozen potato fritters, iced magic, toast toppers, the cupcakes with the thick hard icing, set yogurt, frozen mousse.

Philadelphia in a foil wrap. It tasted so much nicer than in the plastic tubs nowadays.

A cheese spread called something like Silvan. It was in a tub and was day glo orange. Late 70's for this.

Horlicks sweets. They sold them in boots by the counter.

Cool mints. The ones that went cold in your mouth.

Cherryade and Cream soda without sweeteners.

Farmer Brown's crisps. A bit like Pom Bears but were farm animals.

Salt & vinegar crisps that stripped the roof off your mouth.

Spicy tomato wheat crunchies. They only do the bacon ones now.

Skips crisps that had some taste and actually fizzed on your tongue.

I also really miss old fashioned high street bakeries. You could smell the bread baking a mile off. There was always a big queue on Saturday mornings. I used to get a viennese finger or an iced bun that was bigger than my head. They also had those ice cream cones with marshmallow inside and sprinkles on top. Oh and proper crusty rolls!

Loving the Mr Men yoghurt pot pic! I’m sure there was a really tasty hazelnut one.

Butterscotch. Made by Callard & Bowser, it came in a white oblong cardboard packet wrapped in film, with silver writing, and inside, each piece like a little double pillow, wrapped in silver foil. It was delicious. I think those Werthers things are meant to have a similar texture and flavour [sniffs and flounces off]

I loved these. DH and I often talk about them. Plus the nougat.

I was (still am)a massive crisp fan so:
Piglets_hollow pigs
Skydivers-little men on parachutes
Farmer Browns-various animals
Wheelz-big wagon wheels.
Bought from the likes of Kwiksave and FineFare. Also the bags were massive none of this 25g bollocks.
A boiled sweet in a seashell type dish,my mum used to keep the shells and used them as ashtrays!!
And did anyone used to go to the chemist and get an aniseed flavoured twig. They were fuckin horrible but I always used to ask for one when I went with my mum.It was like eating an actual twig ,I don't know what the purpose of them was.😁

The “twigs” are actually dried liquorice root.

I used to love Vesta Beef risotto when I was younger, havent seen it in years, looked online and it was discontinued about 20 years ago

I too mourn the Vesta beef risotto. It was my go to comfort food. I snatched up loads from B&M ten years ago but they are long gone. Savoury rice just isn't the same.

And fish and chip shaped/flavoured crisps in bags with newspaper print

Burton’s Fish & Chips - multipack still available in B&M and, if you’re lucky, larger sharing bags!!

and 'set yoghurts' whatever happened them.

I looked for these recently, couldn't find any but if you go abroad on holiday most of the supermarkets sell them, they are often called French set yoghurts and sold in packs of 4 or singularly, we always get a few for the fridge on holiday, I don't know why they aren't sold here.

Yes! Love set yoghurts - they have them in a banana flavour in Spain. My fave!

Something my mum and I always reminisce over - boomy! Lolly ice (or ice lolly) but it was sorbet like. Amazing!

OMG you are the only other human being I've come across in circa 25 years who remembers lemon crunch! Someone somewhere must know what it was made of?

Me too! I adored the stuff!

OuiWeeOui · 19/05/2022 09:23

Lemon puff biscuits and cream soda that rotted your teeth just by looking at it
Whoever said beef in gravy you can still get it in Iceland in individual portions
Now, can anyone tell me who still sells haslet? I've tried 4 different supermarks. They all only sell fifty million different variations of ham now

Innocenta · 19/05/2022 09:26

Omg spicy tomato wheat crunchies! I miss those so much.

Aqua Libra (delicious semi-fizzy drink with the taste of passion fruit and other exotics. It worked because it wasn’t sugary and the flavours were natural).

St Francis (a blend of wine, brandy and soda I think - was only around for about two years).

Both from the late 1980s.

Aqua Libra was amazing 😋

ChurchlightJane · 19/05/2022 09:27

Savoury rissoles. Like fish cakes but made from mince.

Amybelle88 · 19/05/2022 09:29

Aqua libra has made a comeback! Saw it in Asda last week 🙌

StanleyTheCrane · 19/05/2022 09:31

Does anyone else remember M&S Deltas? They were just plain potato triangles but so good and so addictive. They stopped selling them then Sainsburys sold a version then they stopped selling them too. I'm still in mourning.

CornishGem1975 · 19/05/2022 09:32

There are quite a lot of these that are still available if you look hard enough!

For me it was pizza flavoured crisps - they were shaped like slices of pizza and I can still taste them now...

Playplayaway · 19/05/2022 09:41

Did those super mousses come in an orange and lemon variety or was that something else? The mint ones were amazing.

Coffee matchmakers

Wham bars and Highland toffee bars that you could have tiled a roof with.

Those straws with sherbert in.

Cherry flavours Tunes. 'Tuuuuuuuuuuunes!' Bloody lovely and worth getting a cold for.

Dillidilly · 19/05/2022 09:42

Does anyone else remember Death by Chocolate, a huge chocolate gateaux in the mid to late 80s. Possibly the forerunner of Chocolate Fudge Cake?
I can remember the amazement when it came out, and having it at a wedding.

SpookyMargot · 19/05/2022 09:45

Whatever happened to lemon half moon cakes? They were my favourite growing up in the 90s but haven't seen them in shops for years.

StanleyTheCrane · 19/05/2022 09:50

It looks like lemon half moon cakes are still around. Newsagents and Budget Stores are probably your best bet.

Still made according to their website.

A trawl of Home Bargains, B&M and Poundland will pick up a lot of the things mentioned on this thread.

Perhaps we should put on a coach trip to a large retail park for all the Mumsnetters who seem to not stray outside the fresh produce aisles at Waitrose for their shopping.

KylieCharlene · 19/05/2022 10:00

I miss the Heinz baked bean pizza (I have to make my own version).
Also loved Milkybar chocolate spread. I've tried googling it but it's like it never existed.
Turkish Delight Options Hot Chocolate.

I also miss grapes with seeds.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/05/2022 10:03

I bought Aqua Libra in Morrisons last week. Fizzy water in cans flavoured with raspberry and blackcurrant and lime and mint. No sugar, no sweetners, no plastic.

Two x 4 packs were on offer for £4 so why it costs so much compared with Tango, Coke and other shit, I'll never know.
