Or no one ever talks about them anymore.

I will offer chocolate covered cornflakes, which used to be in high street baker's windows every eater with confectionary eggs atop. A staple home economics recipe, I recall running home from school with a large tin, convinced that I was going to blow everyone's mind with my culinary genius.

And Spam. Like 'corned beef', but the pork version, also in a tin. That curious shape, reminded me of feeding the cat. My DH watches a lot of wild camping/van man stuff in Japan on youtube and it seems to be having a resurgence..

IWW had cornflake buns in Greggs and Morrison’s at Easter.

we also had them at a work lunch on Tuesday!

For me it was pizza flavoured crisps - they were shaped like slices of pizza and I can still taste them now...

Bitza Pizza! I loved those

FabulousKilljoys · 19/05/2022 13:43

My gran used to get a box of Spartan chocolates every Christmas, all hard centres.

And the box of chocolates I used to ask for every Christmas was Weekend. They were so good and I felt so grown up.

Anyone remember either of them?

Fiendish Feet yoghurts - yoghurts in ‘monster’ pots.

I miss Fiendish Feet! We used to cress in the pots afterwards so the monsters had hair!

Sliced tongue 👅
As a treat (for himself mainly) my dad used to buy a cows tongue from the butchers at Christmas. Boil it. Peel off the skin and taste buds and slice it up!! It actually tastes ok but omg 😱 horrific to watch it boiling on the stove!! 🫢

My mum used to cook tongue. It was actually delicious on caraway bread with mustard.

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 19/05/2022 14:12

Heinz tinned sponge pudding, those jelly orange and lemon slices arranged in a circular box you could buy at Christmas in the 8Os.

Shmanmonet · 19/05/2022 14:13

One thing I remember as a kid which is good it has disappeared is those candy sticks made to look like cigarettes! I remember walking down the road on a winter's day blowing out steam and pretending to smoke!

Chasingclouds100 · 19/05/2022 14:53

Hashbrownsandwich & Gliblet! Birds instant hot lemon crunch pudding! I have thought about this sooooo many times over the years - an early childhood memory of having terrible earache and my Mum made me this to make me smile! Nobody else knows what I am talking about!

My mum used to make us sliced tongue sandwiches. From memory they tasted ok but the thought of it now makes me want to puke 🤢. I remember asking her why it was called tongue and she would give vague answers - so I didn't know it actually was a tongue until I was much older.

Spam is still a thing as are spam fritters at the fish and chip shop. I think it’s disgusting, wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole and I’m not sure who even eats it but it’s definitely a thing!

Nest buns are also still very popular at Easter. I think Greggs even sell them 🤷🏻‍♀️

I remember Weekend chocolates!

Supermousse - I have very (probably unreasonably) fond memories of those weird little tubs of frozen foam/mousse/sponge Grin

Oh, and Birds instant hot lemon crunch pudding. It probably tasted like disinfectant, most artificial lemon flavour things do, but to my childhood taste buds it was absolutely divine.

My other half talks about hot banana crunch every single time I make a pudding. I'm assuming it's something from the same range. I pretty sure he's remembering it through some very rosy glasses....

RebeccaCloud9 · 19/05/2022 15:57

@emmeline7725 I bought red delicious apples in M and S really recently.

RebeccaCloud9 · 19/05/2022 16:25

Um Bongo and Moon Shine - you can get UB in some places now but it's all minging sweeteners.

Cadbury's Secret choc bars - I pine for these.

Remembered Aqua Libra and I'll look for the new one in the shops, but it looks like a totally different drink sadly.

Tab clear!

Vol au vents were a staple at every single buffet. Always with a creamy mushroom and a prawn cocktail option. They were always my fave. Some shops sell the cases at Christmas, but it's not the same.

Not a foodstuff that you buy but I was reminiscing the other day about Berni Inn's in the seventies. We used to go for a family meal there occasionally. It was all red decor, curtains etc and always dimly lit. There was a choice of about three or four mains and afterwards we would have like a black coffee in a wine glass with a layer of cream floating on the top ! It seemed so sophisticated fir us kids at the time ! Would love to visit a Berni Inn again !

Omg! This, absolutely this! I’d completely forgotten until I read your post and the memories came flooding back! The coffee was called Irish Coffee and we always ended the meal with one. The meal was invariably prawn cocktail, followed by steak with half a grilled tomato, some mushrooms and chips. I feel all nostalgic now and wish my dad was still here :(.

Nailest · 19/05/2022 16:29

Oh and peas, there were always peas with your steak.

You can still get the jelly slices.
@loopylindi; the only trouble with Kunzle cakes was that they didn't travel well in a picnic on a hot day!
My Mum used to make lemon meringue from the Greens packets- in those days I think it came with a little capsule of lemon essence that you dissolved in the filling.

NeedToKnow101 · 19/05/2022 16:54

Texan bars!
Goblin puddings
Spangles!

Nailest · 19/05/2022 17:06

Does anyone remember frozen cream? It came in a plastic bag like the bags frozen veg comes in, and was all in jagged pieces.

loopylindi · 19/05/2022 17:26

Oh! I forgot Matinee Mixture - multicoloured layers of marzipan type stuff, cut like a swiss roll with bits of shapes in the middle and crinkly edges

xsquared · 19/05/2022 17:59

Gino Ginelli ice cream.
Cadbury's Snow Flake
Findus crispy pancakes
Scampi and Lemon Nik Naks
Lemon puff biscuits

HangingOver · 19/05/2022 18:15

School dinners, which were generally horrible, did have lots of really nice puddings. Often heavy sponges with custard

The marble one, oh my ghaaaaaad!
