Or no one ever talks about them anymore.

I will offer chocolate covered cornflakes, which used to be in high street baker's windows every eater with confectionary eggs atop. A staple home economics recipe, I recall running home from school with a large tin, convinced that I was going to blow everyone's mind with my culinary genius.

And Spam. Like 'corned beef', but the pork version, also in a tin. That curious shape, reminded me of feeding the cat. My DH watches a lot of wild camping/van man stuff in Japan on youtube and it seems to be having a resurgence..

Burtons potato puffs

Heinz tinned vegetable salad... make my own but it's not the same.

My mum used to make ( 1970s) a flan consisting of a pre-made spongey flan base which would get drained , tinned mandarin slices put in then the juice used to be mixed with a sachet of 'QuickSet.' ( as I recall.)

Quick Gel-my Mum did exactly the same thong!

I loved these. DH and I often talk about them. Plus the nougat.

I liked the Plain Jane almond toffee.

Playplayaway · 19/05/2022 10:11

Even though a lot of these still exist, they are just not the same with reduced fat, salt and sugar. They have the nasty additives instead... and are half the size!

Not strictly a food, but a drink but a 'Snowball' drunk only at Christmas - Avocat and lemonade mixed in a long glass.

Drunk only by the children in my extended family in the late seventies and 1980's.

I can remember sitting at my nans, knocking these back with my cousins when I was still in primary school and none of the adults seemed to think it was an issue!!!

We aren't even a family of boozers, it was just the way it was back then 😂

OMG you are the only other human being I've come across in circa 25 years who remembers lemon crunch! Someone somewhere must know what it was made of?

I remember being rather disappointed by Lemon Crunch, I wanted it to taste like lemon meringue pie but it tasted like washing up liquid. Shame.

FabulousKilljoys · 19/05/2022 10:11

@Dillidilly Oof yes Death By Chocolate! My mum used to get one of those at Christmas or if we had family over.

Also Romantica, the ice cream gateaux. Loved that.

LeftFootForward · 19/05/2022 10:12

btw it's probably a good thing a snowball has dropped out of existence as a childs drink!!

Yellowlobelia · 19/05/2022 10:14

Cremola foam! Flavoured powder which you added to water to make a fizzy drink. Probably mostly sodium bicarb.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 19/05/2022 10:39

Does anyone remember when, if you used to get a pack of four yoghurts with all different flavours, they always included Peach Melba and Fruits of the Forest? Both these flavours seem to have disappeared at some point in the 90s, but they were standard issue when I was young!

Deathraystare · 19/05/2022 10:46

@Bloodybridget

I was thinking of Callard & Bowser Butterscotch the other day!!

Deathraystare · 19/05/2022 10:50

@Coachwork

Don't you talk about Sara Lee! Mum used to make the most beautiful Lemon Meringue - not too sweet. Then she decided not to bother anymore so we had the sickly sweet Sara Lee instead. Diabolical!

BanditBluey · 19/05/2022 10:51

Jacques cider. A big bottle, came in purple or white, delicious. Do you remember Dooley's toffee liqueur? In a red & blue bottle. Haven't seen that in years. Oooh and those tiny tins of Heinz toast toppers!! The ham and cheese ones were ace

Lemon meringue is something you don’t see much now either.

Deathraystare · 19/05/2022 11:05

@AuntTwacky

My family loved Cremola. It was always hard to find.

Playplayaway · 19/05/2022 11:15

I thought Sara Lee gateau was still sold as MIL brings out a dead ringer half defrosted one every Christmas. I'll have to ask where it's from!

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/05/2022 11:19

Processed cheese. Big blocks at deli counter, wrapped in foil, very yellow. Grilled beautifully.

FabulousKilljoys · 19/05/2022 11:43

I used to take a munch bunch yoghurt for my school packed lunch and every single time I opened the foil lid a blob of it would pop out onto my school tie. Every. Single. Time.

Chocolate pudding - not sponge pudding, but the sort of ‘not quite mousse, not quite cream, not quite yoghurt’ dairy dessert (as shown in the picture). I always buy it when I’m in Spain, but it seems to be a thing of the past in the UK.

Can you still get proper big cooking apples? I haven’t seen them in years. Also runner beans - obviously you can still get them, but I seem to remember having them all the time as a child. (Although to be fair, we did grow them in the garden, so maybe I was fed an abnormal amount!)

In terms of specific products I miss, does anyone remember Pilsbury Toaster Pockets? They were a bit like a savoury version of McDonalds hot apple pies - you used to cook them in the toaster (and then burn your tongue when the hot filling leaked out). The cheese and chive variety was my favourite.

Aldi do a version of these chocolate puddings (sometimes with a ‘cream’ topping, others have a caramel layer) or try dairy free ones from Alpro which also taste very good.

Lemon puff biscuits and cream soda that rotted your teeth just by looking at it
Whoever said beef in gravy you can still get it in Iceland in individual portions
Now, can anyone tell me who still sells haslet? I've tried 4 different supermarks. They all only sell fifty million different variations of ham now

Tesco advertise haslet on their app - 4 slices in a deli pack
www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/304412572

Or you can buy it from various retailers online

Quosh squash - I particularly liked the strawberry one.
Corona bottles of fizzy drinks.
Tab Clear - in the mid-nineties, not the older one in a pink can.
Pretzels in small blue bags covered in yoghurt or milk chocolate, although I have seen another brand of chocolate ones recently.
Snaps crisps - you can still get the tomato flavour in a couple of places but not the cheese.
Nestle chocolate in square bars from vending machines.
Cheese and Tomato or bolognaise Pot Noodles.
Beanfeast - a student staple that I’ve not seen for years but maybe I’ve just not looked!

Not a specific food but Benjis sandwich shops, they used to be all over London in the nineties, were much cheaper than the other ones and would sell really simple sandwiches, including a jam one.okay.

AWorldWithoutDoors · 19/05/2022 12:10

No idea where the random “okay” came from…

collieresponder88 · 19/05/2022 12:20

Mint Cadbury's cream egg

loopylindi · 19/05/2022 12:25

I've read all through and have found no mention of:
Eiffel Tower lemonade crystals sold in a tall glass jar. Mixed with boiling water and left to cool. Wonderful!

Kunzle cakes - chocolate shells filled with indescribable loveliness that was like orange buttercream. Sara Kennedy (of R2 fame) started a campaign to bring them back. Waitrose did them for a while following that but tastes had changed and they didn't last long.

Breakfast biscuits - like a square with slightly rounded sides. Sort of crispbready. I thought I had imagined that one until I saw the image on (of all places) a jigsaw design.

Proper Black Magic with almond clusters, butterscotch covered in dark chocolate, montelimart, turkish delight and coffee creams.

Orange jubbly - frozen orange juice in the original tetrapack. You cut a hole in the bottom and drank the juice as it thawed. Original (allegedly) of the Lovely Jubbly phrase used by Del Boy in OFAH

Lucky Numbers chocolate selection. Like Roses but with numbers.

Cafe Noir biscuits - plain biscuits with a layer of the most delicious coffee flavour icing on top.

Orange juice from the milkman - quite a unique flavour

Rose hip syrup - good for flavouring milk

Blackcurrant sundaes - absolutely delicious and very moreish despite the tartness of the fruit

Any one remember the Corona man?

ReginaFilange001 · 19/05/2022 12:27

My mum used to make this flan as well. She still does with strawberries especially when it's strawberry picking season - lovely with cream. I've made it and it really transports me back.

Fallsballs · 19/05/2022 13:18

Nutty bars and barley sugar that came in a twist from jars in the shop.
I still think fondly of Texan bars too. The chocolate was all pre palm oil days so it tasted lovely.
I loved a vesta risotto ! I felt very continental eating that.

yes, pp’s have said a lot of things are available that have been mentioned in the cheap shops and some supermarkets but they are really not the same, like not at all. All the (tasty) chemicals and additives have been removed. Pot noodles aren’t a patch in comparison with their original incarnation sadly.
