Breakfast cereal... How many kids on MN are eating these every day?

Just curious about how prevalent breakfast cereals are for breakfast.

I'm thinking cornflakes, shreddies, shredded where, rice crispies, Coco pops, granolas, crunchy nuts etc

We never really have them, because we got into the habit of having eggs or porridge for breakfast, and then having things like Coco Pops/Frosties as a snack every so often. We'd buy one of the more "interesting" cereals and have that.

Anyway, what happens with cereal in your house?

This pondering came after reading how Kellogg want to sue the government over their proposed ban on prominent placement of sugar cereals.

Yep pretty much most days. Don't see the problem.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 14/05/2022 18:25

One has Readybrek, the other has toast.

Bonkerz · 14/05/2022 18:27

Nope. Cereal here is more of a before bed snack. Breakfast tends to be fruit/yogurts or croissants!

We don’t eat very much. For us it’s mainly porridge, egg on toast. And what we do buy is plain, less sugary cereal such as shredded wheat. But judging by the size of the cereal aisle, people must be buying lots including the sugary kinds.

piglet81 · 14/05/2022 18:28

Mine has cereal every day, but things like Rice Krispies. Coco pops are an occasional treat.

underneaththeash · 14/05/2022 18:28

DS has nothing usually. DS2 has toast and honey, sometimes cereal. DH has cereal, a yoghurt and toast! DD has 1/2 a bagel. I have nothing either.
We don't have time for a cooked breakfast in the morning, everyone is out of the house before 7.30am.

OversBo · 14/05/2022 18:29

Kelloggs are being pathetic over this.

MrsWooster · 14/05/2022 18:30

We have ‘oops (Cheerios), shreddies and cornflakes. Sometimes porridge. I think we need to revisit it and introduce some protein (other than peanut butter on toast) but cereal is pretty ingrained.

NearlyHeadlessNick · 14/05/2022 18:30

Most days are cereal, but Weetabix and rice Krispies for us. They don't have much else in the way of sugar apart from a bit of birthday cake so I don't worry too much.

BobbinHood · 14/05/2022 18:30

We have stuff like coco pops in the multipacks on holiday. Cornflakes (cheap equivalent) once or twice a week. More often weetabix.

carefullycourageous · 14/05/2022 18:32

Ours usually have oats.

Greydogs123 · 14/05/2022 18:32

We have weetabix as a main cereal (partner eats it every day, dd a couple times a week, me not often). Porridge is also a staple. Shreddies, cornflakes and rice crispies are eaten at weekends or as a before bed snack. Dd often chooses something like a cheese toastie for breakfast as it’s more filling. Co-op sells a couple of sugary cereals in those small boxes, so occasionally dd has one of those as a weeekend treat.

Oizys · 14/05/2022 18:33

ds1 loves cereal so he has it most days usual corn flakes or wheat biscuits but sometimes has cinnamon crunch as a treat.

Growing up we always had something like bran flakes with yogurt and stewed fruit when it was a cereal day and then on Fridays we could pick a variety pack cereal

museumum · 14/05/2022 18:33

Ds has weetabix or porridge.

frim your list though I don’t think shredded wheat has any sugar?

CheshireChat · 14/05/2022 18:34

Mine has cookie cereal pretty much every morning, but he's autistic and before this he used to have nothing before school so it's an improvement for us. I don't think I'd allow it if his dies wasn't so restricted though.

ThreeRingCircus · 14/05/2022 18:35

My DDs have cereal most mornings. Usually either Cheerios, Rice Krispies or Weetabix. Occasionally they have toast or crumpets with butter/honey/peanut butter or marmite. Sometimes greek yoghurt and fruit.

I've never bought them coco pops, crunchy nut, frosties or any other really sugary cereal although I think Cheerios probably aren't great. But they eat a balanced diet in general I think and aren't really very fussy.

SquigglePigs · 14/05/2022 18:35

DD is 3 and usually has Weetabix, some Cheerios, shreddies and porridge. At nursery she'll often have toast. I do make eggs and things but not at 6.30! During the week she has a bit of something at home (the above or a yogurt) then more breakfast at nursery. At the weekend she'll have one of the above when she gets up at 6 or so, then I'll make eggs or similar later on when I'm ready to eat.

headbored · 14/05/2022 18:36

Ds9 has Frosties or honey nut cornflakes every day

Ds6 has weetabix with milk and sugar every day

Dds (teens) I'm lucky if they have some chocolate spread on toast, a cereal bar or a sweet waffle

SunnyLobelia · 14/05/2022 18:36

Not here. I have a chiold with ASD and very restrictive eating. Cereals do not make the grade except for occasionally cheerios dry in a plastic bag to be eaten like crisps.

Breakfasts here are toast with cream cheese, vitamin tablet and sliced apple. Every Single Day.

Indoctro · 14/05/2022 18:38

One kid always wants cereal so he had bran flakes, weetabix or shredded wheat

Other boy like porridge

FreezyFreezy · 14/05/2022 18:40

Mine have them 2x daily (although dc2 is starting to prefer toast); usually a choice between cocoa pops, cornflakes, chocolate pillows and other things of that ilk. We always get the cheapest versions available.

They would eat other things for breakfast and supper but we don't have the time or the money to be able to do that every day.

Mulhollandmagoo · 14/05/2022 18:41

I absolutely despise over sweet cereal (frosties, Coco pops etc) so I don't buy them for my child, she likes rice crispies and Weetabix, but breakfast for her is usually toast followed by fruit and natural yogurt. She is also partial to overnight oats too, it's what I have as I prep the night before so I know I will have something.

Evilista · 14/05/2022 18:41

My DC eat it nearly every morning and usually again before bed. They like having little bowls of it without milk through the day as a snack too if I let them. They also eat tonnes of bread

purpleme12 · 14/05/2022 18:42

We don't have it every day no.
But it pisses me off that they're trying to dictate to us

RightOnTheEdge · 14/05/2022 18:42

My ds has crunchy nut cornflakes quite a lot or Cheerios, he likes Weetabix with fruit and sometimes he has bagels.
