Breakfast cereal... How many kids on MN are eating these every day?

Just curious about how prevalent breakfast cereals are for breakfast.

I'm thinking cornflakes, shreddies, shredded where, rice crispies, Coco pops, granolas, crunchy nuts etc

We never really have them, because we got into the habit of having eggs or porridge for breakfast, and then having things like Coco Pops/Frosties as a snack every so often. We'd buy one of the more "interesting" cereals and have that.

Anyway, what happens with cereal in your house?

This pondering came after reading how Kellogg want to sue the government over their proposed ban on prominent placement of sugar cereals.

I find cereal to be cheap, I tend to buy own brand and Asda own brand shreddies are 87p for 750g for example. Of course branded stuff costs more but then that’s the same with porridge oats.

Eggs or porridge is undoubtedly healthier although personally I can’t face eggs in the morning, we tend to do porridge a couple of mornings a week and it takes longer, creates more mess/washing up than a bowl of cereal plus dc need an adult to make it. People also forget that it takes power to make these options which costs too.

DS has two weetabix with banana/honey/milk every single day. I’d be bored eating the same thing every day but he’s quite fussy with his food. He’s an athlete, training about 20 hrs a week and we’ve had to hire a sports nutritionist to stop him losing weight. She’d rather he was eating eggs but is happy enough with his weetabix combination. Her view is given the number of calories he uses, the priority is getting food into him and as cereal goes, it could be worse.

DH eats loads of cornflakes, I eat porridge. DS has a very occasional bowl of shreddies. I always joke DH would be better off eating the box as cereal is just shite but I don’t like it.

DS usually has weetabix or shreddies with warm milk in winter. So daily.

Both have one of the above at least twice a week the rest of the time either for breakfast or a snack.

EsmeeMerlin · 15/05/2022 10:40

Mine have Weetabix or porridge with chopped fruit most days. It's quick, easy and fills them up. On the weekend we sometimes have croissants if we have got out the door early to do the food shopping or something like bacon sandwiches, scrambled egg on toast if we are having a rare day in and we have time. The only time I buy other cereal is when I do a first December breakfast and I buy the small boxes of cereal in the mixed selection packet as a treat.

LaWench · 15/05/2022 11:08

I don't really like cereal, I prefer toast or egg if I have breakfast, not overly fussed. DH loves a huge bowl of shreddies or shredded wheat caked in sugar. I don't control the sugar intake, the DCs will help themselves to sugary cereals, Nutella crepes or croissants. Sometimes DC1 will make scrambled eggs if she can be bothered or will often have nothing. The only one in our family who is overweight is me, they're all v slim.

I think a gas ring is about 2kwh? So 15p an hour? I put oats and milk together the night before and it cooks very quickly that way. Eggs don't take long to cook either. I don't forget the power, I'm very much aware of it bring on a low income.

We have weetabix (to be eaten without sugar, only with milk), cornflakes, a flake and fruit type cereal and Nutrigrain in the cupboard / on offer every morning. DDs will usually have toast (with peanut butter or Marmite and cheese), or porridge instead. Sometimes yoghurt or fruit.

I don't really buy the sugary cereals (Frosties etc) and the occasional time they have tried Coco Pops (on holiday in the variety packs) they didn't actually like them.

Sometimes the cereal goes in the school lunchbox for the fussy eater who likes to eat it dry as a snack

Stressyundressy · 15/05/2022 11:23

^ I am aware Nutrigrain is a sugary cereal and I contradict myself by saying I don't buy sugary ones when I do, I meant the more child marketed sugary ones I guess

ConfusedByDesign · 15/05/2022 12:18

We have weetabix, porridge or toast on weekdays then cooked breakfast on weekends.
I've never liked the idea of giving dcs a huge sugar hit first thing.

MiniTheMinx · 15/05/2022 13:14

None of us eat breakfast. When dc were small they were given a choice of toast, eggs, porridge or boring cereals such as bran flakes or wheatabix.

I've always been suspicious of cereals and government advice. As a child I remember being told we should eat cereal and bread, sugar was fine, don't eat more than two eggs a week and animal fats are the work of the devil.

Anyway, all of us are slim, active and thankfully healthy. We eat quite a high fat diet, everything is prepared from scratch and we eat lots of veg. For my inspiration I looked at the diet of my own very healthy, very active, very skinny, and long lived grandparents. I even shock horror.....use lard sometimes to fry eggs or roast potatoes. They had a farm. Up early no time for breakfast. Breakfast came later after a good few hours work, and was protein based.

I think the average individual doesn't need breakfast. The body needs a good break from eating, and having breakfast before having fasted for less than 16 hrs or so is detrimental, especially in terms of weight maintenance.

Ds (nearly 4) would eat (own brand) cheerios every morning if I let him. He has porridge (with frozen cherries, apple and cinnamon or banana) a few times a week and sometimes shreddies or weetabix. Then he will have a banana and usually an orange.

Hes a healthy weight and is a fruit and veg fiend (always gets over 5, sometimes up to 10 in a day). He has a good diet and mostly home cooked meals the rest of the day

SunnyLobelia · 15/05/2022 16:34

I've bought prridge oats today on the back of this thread.

Not sure it is so healthy as I usually eat it with nutella and honey, but gosh I am looking forward to it!!

noborisno · 15/05/2022 16:38

I grew up with cereals for brekkie, and the toy that fell out of the box.

We don't have cereal often for breakfast. Or my daughter has Weetabix.

We usually have pancakes if I make breakfast. Otherwise we get our own things through the day or don't eat until lunch. We have a late start in this house.

We like cereal as an evening snack.

Weepingwillows12 · 15/05/2022 16:45

My two have cereal probably between 3 to 6 times a week depending on if we have time to cook at weekends. Other days we have porridge, crumpets, fry up, eggs, bacon butty etc. Pop tarts is a special treat. Cereal wise they have Weetabix, shreddies or wholewheat Cheerios with a bit of honey and fresh fruit or raisins depending what I have in.

On holiday they get the Kellogg's selection box, eat the frosties and cocopops then grudgingly eat the rice crispies and noone wants the rest. Despite that, they still beg for the selection pack each holiday!

Weepingwillows12 · 15/05/2022 16:46

Cereal helps me get fibre in the kids as they don't like the brown rice and pasta although are good with green veg. Plus it's quick and simple.

Bigoldhag · 15/05/2022 17:54

I only buy Weetabix, but only because I am calorie counting and sugary cereals (which I do enjoy!) are too calorie dense.

I do eat sugar with my Weetabix - usually a teaspoons worth and I don’t feel bad for it! Plenty drink more sugar in tea/coffee daily than that. Probably have Weetabix, once or twice a week, usually with semi skim milk, the sugar and a banana, otherwise I eat eggs with egg whites to bulk it up - sometimes with turkey bacon, sometimes just a yoghurt or fruit too. This option is significantly more expensive for me as I buy good quality eggs but it is far more filling!

NoWigNoWit · 15/05/2022 18:01

It’s coco pops and cheerio’s in this house, Jesus I thought that was the norm 🤣

ZenNudist · 15/05/2022 18:03

I don't get sugary cereal but except porridge days (mainly ds2) or the odd fruit crumpet toast or pastry day then my dc eat cereal.

Beetlewings · 15/05/2022 18:19

When they were little (and I had more control) they would eat porridge, eggs, fruit etc. now they are of an age where they can decide for themselves they are currently having cheerios. All in all I'm fine with that. Porridge option is always available.

BlossomRussosHatCollection · 15/05/2022 18:38

Cheerios and Shreddies, almost daily. Porridge occasionally. The multipacks with Coco-pops/Frosties/etc on holiday!

ChocolateHippo · 15/05/2022 18:52

DC has porridge or bran flakes with fruit for breakfast here. We do have some "Lucky charms" type cereal with all sorts in it but that's for pudding/treat, not breakfast...I treat it the same as a chocolate bar or bag of sweets.

YingMei · 15/05/2022 20:13

Mine have weetabix most days, occasionally shred dies or cheerios. So does everyone else's kids I know tbh can't get that excited about it

SmiledWtherisingsun · 15/05/2022 20:28

Also eat fruit/ yogurt/ eggs/ toast

SmiledWtherisingsun · 15/05/2022 20:29
