Breakfast cereal... How many kids on MN are eating these every day?

Just curious about how prevalent breakfast cereals are for breakfast.

I'm thinking cornflakes, shreddies, shredded where, rice crispies, Coco pops, granolas, crunchy nuts etc

We never really have them, because we got into the habit of having eggs or porridge for breakfast, and then having things like Coco Pops/Frosties as a snack every so often. We'd buy one of the more "interesting" cereals and have that.

Anyway, what happens with cereal in your house?

This pondering came after reading how Kellogg want to sue the government over their proposed ban on prominent placement of sugar cereals.

2 teens, one doesn’t eat breakfast (she will eat at break time at school) and the other will eat a cereal bar but not cereal as she doesn’t like milk.

I eat poridge, special K or granola with yoghurt.

puppetcat · 14/05/2022 19:43

my DD eats porridge most days, but sometimes shreddies.

chubbachub · 14/05/2022 19:44

Breakfast is usually porridge, waffles, crossiants with fruit or toast + something.
They used to have cereal all the time but we've just gravitated more toward other options. I think they wanted warm things in the winter time.
We always have weetabix, rice crispies and shreddies in and sometimes I have this as a snack. All supermarket own brand though.

Weetabix, shreddies or porridge every day for dh and ds. DDS sometimes have breakfast, sometimes don't. I rarely do but if I do it's Weetabix.

I wouldn't put Weetabix or shredded wheat in the 'sugary cereals' category.

Oblomov22 · 14/05/2022 19:46

Not that I support the anti sugar brigade at all, but I'm surprised it's taken the government this long to start this stance. Can't see Kelloggs getting very far with this.

Goldenphoenix · 14/05/2022 19:48

Mine have lower sugar cereal in the morning, I don't have a problem with cornflakes, rice crispies, Weetabix etc

I don't let them have frosties etc apart from special occasions

honeybushbunch · 14/05/2022 19:52

DD cycles between toast, porridge, fruit and yoghurt and spelt flakes - with the odd brioche/croissant/pain au chocolat thrown in for a treat. She’ll also occasionally have shreddies and she loves the very rare bowl of coco-pops she gets in a hotel/on holiday.

I don’t like cereal much and either skip breakfast and just have coffee, or have the occasional toast and honey.

HerculesMulligan · 14/05/2022 19:55

Me and my kids would happily live on Special K with red berries. But we don't. They tend to have honey on toast / bagel with butter for breakfast, with yoghurt and a banana or (for my 2yo) sometimes an Ella's fruit pouch.

catsandquails · 14/05/2022 20:01

DS likes egg on toast, bacon sandwich, sometimes waffles with cinnamon. DD generally has toast, fruit, scotch pancakes.

We always have cereal in the cupboard which they sometimes choose- some sensible options like weetabix and some for a treat like krave.

MargaretThursday · 14/05/2022 20:01

Ds has wheetabix
Dh has whatever muesli is on offer
The rest of us don't normally bother about breakfast.

The only one that they all go mad for is porridge. Can't stand it myself but if one is making it then they all come charging down to have some.

Oblomov22 · 14/05/2022 20:03

My ds's have wide variety for breakfast: porridge, toast, shreddies, fruit and youghurt, pancakes, waffles, eggs.

StuckInTheMiddleOfNowhere · 14/05/2022 20:04

Most days, Or toast.
My dcs dont like eggs or porridge.

Pebbles16 · 14/05/2022 20:05

IMHO there is more nutrition in the cardboard box than the contents.

Louise0701 · 14/05/2022 20:06

I honestly can’t remember the last time I bought cereal. DD has porridge or eggs and the boys have toast and fruit. Sometimes a yoghurt

Hospedia · 14/05/2022 20:07

theyhavenothingbuttheaudacity · 14/05/2022 19:26

Come on this is MN remember
A handful of forraged nettles and some millet is the order of the day for Tarquins breakfast

Millet is only for high days and holidays. You're giving millet every day!? Tsk tsk, this is why we have an obesity crisis.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 14/05/2022 20:08

Everyday. Ds doesn't like eating anything first thing in the morning. So he eats tiny amount of cereal with yogurt.

Ididanamechange · 14/05/2022 20:10

We have cereal every day but what i consider the lower suger ones. Weetabix, shreddies, rice crispies etc. They love porridge but that's usually a supper or weekend breakfast because I find it such a faff when we have to be out the house early for nursery. It takes ages to cook then ages to cool down enough for them to eat which causes lots of winging and then it seems to take ages to wash up!

Paddingtonthebear · 14/05/2022 20:10

Mine (9yrs) has porridge or granola for breakfast. Or bagels. But no cornflakes, coco pops, etc.

I don’t like any cereals and never eat them. Husband eats them very occasionally.

Skyeheather · 14/05/2022 20:13

Both DC have Weetabix every day, I have toast on weekdays and porridge at weekends, DP Bran Flakes every day. DC have a cereal bar for their morning break, Coco Pops, Frosties, Rice Krispies or Belvitta.

Hospedia · 14/05/2022 20:14

Currently on top of the fridge:

  • Weetabix
  • porridge oats
  • raspberry wheats (like mini Shredded Wheat but filled with mushed up raspberries)
  • Cheerios (honey ones)
  • Weetos
  • some sort of Jordans nutty stuff that DD picked

DC have free choice of what they want although the Weetabix and raspberry wheats tend to run out the fastest, no rules on which are weekend cereals or weekday cereals but each to their own.

I think these proposed rules about displaying them are bullshit. I do my shopping online so it won't stop me just typing in the name of the cereal I'm looking for.

Do they still make Sugar Puffs? All this cereal talk has got me wanting some.

Sienna9522 · 14/05/2022 20:14

My 5 year old has cereal on all school days. Occasionally pate or cheese spread on toast. It’s just the quickest option as she likes her sleep. On weekends we usually have something cooked but not always.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/05/2022 20:14

It takes ages to cook then ages to cool down enough for them to eat which causes lots of winging and then it seems to take ages to wash up!

The texture ends up being a little different but if your kids aren't fussy you can put porridge in a slow cooker overnight to save all the fuss and wake up to the perfect temperature.

MamboMambo · 14/05/2022 20:16

Not every day. We alternate between porridge, Wheetabix (both usually with fruit in) toast, and cereal. The cereal is usually Cheerios, Cornflakes or Crunchy Nut and maybe Chocolate hoops or rice but I do try to limit that to once a week. The eldest will also usually have a sausage or bacon sandwich with hash browns on a Sunday.

Notdoingthis · 14/05/2022 20:16

We have hoops, shreddies and porridge in the cupboard. But usually
Dc1 has honey on toast
Dc2 has porridge
Dc3 has shreddies.

HotDogKetchup · 14/05/2022 20:17

Toast and wheatabix for us. I don’t have sugary cereals.
