Breakfast cereal... How many kids on MN are eating these every day?

Just curious about how prevalent breakfast cereals are for breakfast.

I'm thinking cornflakes, shreddies, shredded where, rice crispies, Coco pops, granolas, crunchy nuts etc

We never really have them, because we got into the habit of having eggs or porridge for breakfast, and then having things like Coco Pops/Frosties as a snack every so often. We'd buy one of the more "interesting" cereals and have that.

Anyway, what happens with cereal in your house?

This pondering came after reading how Kellogg want to sue the government over their proposed ban on prominent placement of sugar cereals.

We don’t have any cereals at home. DD is not a breakfast eater. They have snacks at school at 9 am so I don’t mind her not eating breakfast before school. At weekends we have toast or bacon.

My teens have cereal - corn flakes, bran flakes, Rice Krispies, shreddies, weetabix. They're all v skinny btw.

PanettoneMoly · 14/05/2022 20:29

Weetabix and occasionally Special K because DH eats it. Also toast and yoghurt (full fat plain). DD has an egg allergy so eggs are out of the question.

I spent £9 on Kellogs yesterday, but it was on offer and I got over 2kgs of cereal.

Mine have it everyday, they must have something with wheat to fill them selves up (shredded wheat, whreddies or mini Weetabix) and then some rice krispies on top.

My eldest would have it for every meal and snack if he thought he could get away with it, but I feel that once he gets too constantly eating teenager, cereal will be his snack of choice. We've recently moved to skimmed milk.

Cheerios every single day, sometimes with a crumpet chaser. I think they are relatively low sugar.

I've never been a breakfast person, an attitude that has been passed on to my DC.

pattish · 14/05/2022 20:40

I HATE cereal and everything it stands for with a passion.

It is marketed as (at best) harmless or (at worst) healthy. It is neither. The clue is that it is so full of sugar that it comes under these new laws.

Think about it - we’ve been told that it’s ok for the first thing we put in our mouth in the morning to be sugar.

You might want to check the sugar content of Cheerios…

How are Corn Flakes sugary? Am I missing something?

hiredandsqueak · 14/05/2022 20:45

Dd has something cooked. Sausage cob, bacon sandwich, omelette and toast, boiled egg and soldiers, pancakes and fruit and fromage frais. She will eat dry cereal as a snack occasionally but not for breakfast.

It’s not just about obesity - it’s what they do to your blood sugar, especially when given first thing in the morning. No wonder we have a diabetes epidemic.

SatinHeart · 14/05/2022 20:47

We have cornflakes, shreddies and Weetabix in the house. DC usually have one of those or toast for breakfast. I won't buy any cereal that is sugarier than shreddies (actually asda imitation shreddies which iirc have a bit less sugar).

Neither of them will touch eggs or porridge with a bargepole unfortunately.

Hmm why does it have an Amber for sugar if its so high?? (genuine question in the absence of tone!)

WeAllHaveWings · 14/05/2022 20:51

Teen food bin Ds has big bowl of porridge with a large banana every morning, never wants anything else as he knows it is the only one that keeps him feeling full until break time at school. He likes the sugary cereals but is starving again after an hour or so.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 14/05/2022 20:54

Mine had shreddies or Weetabix almost every day

21g per 100g - over 6g per serving.

That only translates to an amber warning because the department of health still doesn’t realise how damaging to health sugar is.

Because they have sugar in them.

Theforest · 14/05/2022 21:03

Mine have weetabix, shreddies, cheerios or oats with cold milk. Only cheerio's with added sugar.

*Shreddies

BigYellowElephant · 14/05/2022 21:24

Mine have weetabix 3/4x a week. I occasionally have all bran

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 14/05/2022 21:26

Readybrek, shreddies or weetabix. Cheerios as a snack to keep them quiet in the high chair while im serving up

pattish · 14/05/2022 21:27

@Higgeldypiggeldy35

Genuine question - did you know before this thread how much sugar is in Cheerios?

Pbbananabagel · 14/05/2022 21:30

Wheatabix and plain rice kispies (off brand versions) very popular in this house but I make banana oat pancakes quite regularly or French toast with mashed banana in too as my 3yr old is against all fruit/veg so I have to sneak them in every chance I get. Also eggs on toast when we’re all home together.
