Breakfast cereal... How many kids on MN are eating these every day?

Just curious about how prevalent breakfast cereals are for breakfast.

I'm thinking cornflakes, shreddies, shredded where, rice crispies, Coco pops, granolas, crunchy nuts etc

We never really have them, because we got into the habit of having eggs or porridge for breakfast, and then having things like Coco Pops/Frosties as a snack every so often. We'd buy one of the more "interesting" cereals and have that.

Anyway, what happens with cereal in your house?

This pondering came after reading how Kellogg want to sue the government over their proposed ban on prominent placement of sugar cereals.

We don't have it every day no.
But it pisses me off that they're trying to dictate to us

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 14/05/2022 18:42

Porridge or a homemade smoothie here. The kids complain (borrring) but it's habit and easy now. Occasionally they get weetabix or muesli, but like others it's more common as a pudding/supper than a breakfast. Variety pack on holidays

TheProvincialLady · 14/05/2022 18:42

Mine almost never have them. Occasionally I might buy granola for a treat but otherwise it’s eggs, porridge, muesli or fruit and yoghurt. I find cereal very unsatisfying and it’s so processed.

No, gave mine eggs or some kind of protein, never buy cereal.

Thesearmsofmine · 14/05/2022 18:44

A couple of mornings a week mine have cereal. Usually weetabix, shreddies, cheerios in the week and then a more sugary one at the weekend.

I absolutely despise over sweet cereal (frosties, Coco pops etc) so I don't buy them for my child, she likes rice crispies and Weetabix, but breakfast for her is usually toast followed by fruit and natural yogurt. She is also partial to overnight oats too, it's what I have as I prep the night before so I know I will have something.

By that I meant I despise the taste of them....my kid would definitely love them, so maybe I'm being a bit cruel not getting them😂

Aworldofmyown · 14/05/2022 18:47

We have porridge, weetabix, cornflakes or granola.
Coco pops at Christmas (no idea why 😆)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/05/2022 18:47

Available everyday, but they could also choose toast, yoghurt, fruit, eggs or something like croissants if I but them.

Saturdays are often Danish pastries, then something cooked like a bacon or sausage sandwich on a Sunday.

Caspianberg · 14/05/2022 18:47

Dh and I grew up on pretty sugary cereal daily. Tbh it doesn’t seem to have harmed us much. Both heathy weight and generally, teeth fine.

we do try to not have similar now. We have granola and some branflakes in the house, usually have with yogurt and fruit if we have. But Ds age 2 eats porridge 90% of the time. I prefer porridge or boiled eggs now also if I have the choice.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/05/2022 18:48

Can't Kellogg's just reduce the sugar in them? They taste like sweets anyway.

DD has eggs, toast, porridge or a croissant. The only cereals bar porridge in the house are corn flakes for chocolate/golden syrup treats.

CornishGem1975 · 14/05/2022 18:49

Mine have whatever they fancy. Might be cereal but could quite as easily be a muffin, some fruit, a waffle, toast, a bagel...

Ambertonix · 14/05/2022 18:50

DH has cheerios or shreddies most mornings and porridge at the weekend. I prefer crunchy nut cornflakes but wouldnt eat them for breakfast. They would be a late evening snack if i was still peckish!

DinosApple · 14/05/2022 18:51

It's a mix. I can't abide cereal, DD1 loves it with no milk (🙄), DD2 has porridge, DH would eat half a box of crunchy nut cornflakes every day given half the chance.

My preference is leftovers, eggs or nothing.

I've been fascinated by what other cultures eat for breakfast. My mum is from India and the part she is from has idlis and samba which are delicious. Yet she emigrated here and her family adopted cereal for a morning meal... 🙄🤣

CinnamonStar · 14/05/2022 18:51

We have cut back on cereal recently, we used to eat a lot, now mostly swapped to porridge - it was a cost change rather than an attempt to avoid sugar, it was costing us an absolute fortune. I used to buy a couple of boxes of granola every week.

TabithaTittlemouse · 14/05/2022 18:53

We don’t have cereals. It’s a bit bonkers to start the day with a big bowl of sugar, obviously for pp who’s child has sensory issues it’s great when you find something that they will eat but otherwise it’s bizarre. Mine were really sensitive to sugar and would be a nightmare if they started the day in this way.

I neither agree or disagree with the campaign as it should be up to the parents.

Thejoyfulstar · 14/05/2022 18:55

A mix of cheerios, bran flakes, cornflakes, overnight oats, pancakes and banana, banana sandwich, peanut butter sandwich and always Coco Pops on Friday morning, just 'cus it's fun.

worriedaboutmoney2022 · 14/05/2022 18:55

Nobody in our house eats cereal at all nobody likes it
We tend to have fruit, yogurt, toast, croissants, eggs
Anything other than cereal

ScrubUpWellInMySundayBest · 14/05/2022 18:55

We have cereal every morning but no chocolate ones! We have cheerios, shreddies or cornflakes. If they want anything else it’s toast or fruit and waffles.

Dudds · 14/05/2022 18:56

I have Cereal and toast every morning (do a very physical job so need filling up properly)

DS 9, bagel, boiled egg, Croissant, pan au chocolate or weetabix/shreddies over the week.

DS 16, grabs a Cereal bar and fruit on his way out of the door but eats a massive bowl of Cereal (honey nut cornflakes or rice crispies) when he gets home.

DDs 18, tend to eat Bagels or crumpets occasionally a Croissant

DP has granola or toast.

Robostripes · 14/05/2022 18:56

DS has a bowl of Cheerios most days, followed by toast. He likes porridge and sometimes asks for that instead, but then adds either a big dollop of jam to it or drenches it in maple or golden syrup, so I’m not sure that’s actually much better for him than the Cheerios.

Frosties/Coco pops etc are a holiday treat when we usually get a variety pack in for him.

Soubriquet · 14/05/2022 18:58

My two have cereal every morning.

Sometimes even for their tea

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 14/05/2022 18:58

I have the plain, own-brand "malted wheats" and DS has the best-selling brand of "wheat biscuits". I actually prefer the own brand version of mine; and DS can definitely tell the difference if I don't buy the brand name version of his 😄

Crystalvas · 14/05/2022 19:00

Weetabix, rice crispies or branflakes. Depends which one the DC’s want I let them choose.

RandomUsernameHere · 14/05/2022 19:01

Mine have it every day, but the much less sugary ones like Weetabix and Shredded Wheat. They only have the sugary ones on holiday.

cattanoogacats · 14/05/2022 19:01

My teenager has cereal, a cereal bar or nothing 🙄

My youngest has cereal occasionally but prefers toast or a bagel.
