Breakfast cereal... How many kids on MN are eating these every day?

Just curious about how prevalent breakfast cereals are for breakfast.

I'm thinking cornflakes, shreddies, shredded where, rice crispies, Coco pops, granolas, crunchy nuts etc

We never really have them, because we got into the habit of having eggs or porridge for breakfast, and then having things like Coco Pops/Frosties as a snack every so often. We'd buy one of the more "interesting" cereals and have that.

Anyway, what happens with cereal in your house?

This pondering came after reading how Kellogg want to sue the government over their proposed ban on prominent placement of sugar cereals.

My son is autistic he doesn't like cereal but he likes plain porridge with milk, berries and toast with almond butter. He eats a huge breakfast and very small lunch.

Now and then I fancy some cheerios for "supper" (post dinner) but I definitely only eat a few times a month.

Svara · 14/05/2022 19:05

Haven't bought it since DS was born at least, he's 16. Always had porridge, eggs, leftovers. I like muesli or granola but for dinner after a late lunch, or for supper.

underneathleaf · 14/05/2022 19:06

Every single day (something like weetabix, muesli or shredded wheat) and then again at nursery most days (cheerios etc). They are healthy weights good teeth etc. Can't get worried about it.

DS1, 14, usually has porridge or a bagel, occasionally Rice Krispies
DS2, 12, usually has a bagel or toast, sometimes muesli or Weetabix

devildeepbluesea · 14/05/2022 19:08

Never eat cereal. Never have.

DD will occasionally ask for one. I usually get Cheerios and they go stale after about 3 bowls.

georgarina · 14/05/2022 19:08

DC usually have bran sticks for breakfast, sometimes mixed with granola, or porridge

ColdHappyBap · 14/05/2022 19:09

One of mine hates it so never has it. The other is autistic and would happily eat cereal for every meal. Usually either regular Weetabix or the mini chocolate ones. I used to be strict about cereal but then as the dietary restrictions grew I gave up. I'm just glad something gets eaten.

SneezesHaveStarted · 14/05/2022 19:09

One of mine has cereal every day, often multiple times a day (though he does tend to naturally pick the healthier ones like weetabix/bran flakes). The others sometimes have cereal, sometimes toast/hot cross buns/croissants/bagels. None of them will eat a cooked breakfast.

Bubblesandsqueak1 · 14/05/2022 19:11

I probably buy cheerios once a year no one is a cereal fan in our house we all have crumpets, toast porridge ect

jewishmum · 14/05/2022 19:12

Weetabix with banana, porridge with blueberries, cheerios or those malties things with the marshmallow shapes

Svara · 14/05/2022 19:14

We were were given coco pops from a foodbank once when DS was little and he wouldn't eat them. I didn't like children's cereals as a child, I preferred shredded wheat, sultana bran or porridge. They don't taste nice to me at all.

Olsi109 · 14/05/2022 19:17

Cheerios and shreddies in atm but they'll last ages as they tend to go for pancakes, French toast, waffles, toast or oats.

Favouritefruits · 14/05/2022 19:18

I have a bowl of crunchy nut cornflakes every morning, the kids sometimes have cereal none of us have it with milk always eat it dry. My husband takes porridge pots to work for his breakfast. I thought most people eat cereal for breakfast as there’s a whole isle of it at the supermarket.

Arenanewbie · 14/05/2022 19:20

We have porridge or Wetabix for breakfast, occasionally Kelloggs Special K with berries (like twice a year). DH likes cornflakes as a snack or supper. I used to like little Wetabix parcels with banana filling, but gave up - too much sugar.

bluechameleon · 14/05/2022 19:22

Both DC have cereal most days. We usually have two out of weetabix, shreddies, rice krispies or cornflakes (own brand version). At weekends they are allowed sweet cereal, usually frosties or coco pops.

ChanceNorman · 14/05/2022 19:22

Porridge, weetavix and cornflakes here mainly, with banana or berries on. Occasionally coco pops or cheerios.

Choccyoclocky · 14/05/2022 19:23

My children have cereal every day.

DS10 - Cheerios
DD9 - frosted shreddies
DS4 - frosties or cocopops

Come on this is MN remember
A handful of forraged nettles and some millet is the order of the day for Tarquins breakfast

FourTeaFallOut · 14/05/2022 19:27

It's fruit and not-Weetabix, porridge or scrambled eggs on toast here and DH will do them a chorizo omelette if he's around on the morning but I can't be arsed with that. Ds went through a crunchy nut phase when he refused to eat on a morning but fortunately that was short lived. I like some granola cereals but just every now and again.

My kids don't watch a lot of regular television, tbh. Netflix/ Amazon/ YouTube covers the bulk of it and I don't think cereal advertisements figure prominently but I guess if Kellogg's is doing a shit fit about regulation then they clearly think it's doing some heavy lifting.

🤣 so true

TeenTraumaTrials · 14/05/2022 19:34

DH and DS have either overnight oats or porridge with fruit most mornings or DS has granola with banana. DD has toast or bagel with bacon or avocado or sometimes nutella and a smoothie pouch. I have bagel or sourdough with egg/bacon/brie/smoked salmon/avocado. But me and DD both have lactose intolerance. We eat egg or sausage rolls or croissants with bacon at the weekend. Many cereals are just like eating cake for breakfast but each to their own.

Abraxan · 14/05/2022 19:35

I work in an infant school and we often talk about meals/food etc etc as part of certain lessons. IME most of our children are having cereals each morning. The most popular seem to be Cheerios, Weetabix, Porridge/Ready Brek and Shreddies when we've asked.

At our school breakfast club children have a choice of 3 different cereals (weetabix, cornflakes or cheerios), toast, brioche roll, toasted bagel or a crumpet (sometimes a scotch pancake) with butter, honey or jam. We used to offer porridge done in a microwave but it wasn't popular - as in no one ever wanted it, so that was scrapped and we now don't have a microwave available anyway. We don't have the facilities to cook so can't offer many other options. The most popular choice at the moment is Cheerios, followed by bagels with honey. Drink options are water milk, apple juice or orange juice - apple is most popular.

Dd is much older now but she has never liked cereals so never ate them, still doesn't know at 20y. She rarely has breakfast, other than a coffee, despite pushing her to do so for years growing up. She hates eating so soon after waking. DH has cereals daily, normally something like All Bran or Special K with yogurt and fruit, washed down with a cup of tea. I can't eat straight away so grab some toast and butter at school from breakfast club, with a cup of tea of coffee.

savehannah · 14/05/2022 19:36

I rarely eat it but the kids eat it most days

trilbydoll · 14/05/2022 19:39

I have so much trouble getting the kids to eat in the morning. They're on breakfast bars at the moment which are probably no better than sugary cereal. Tbh I see stuff like coco pops or krave as a useful vehicle to get milk in them. And I have them as my weekend breakfast, I love sugary cereals!

NamechangeFML · 14/05/2022 19:39

Readybrek for DC , occasionally cheerios. Me frosties and Dh porridge
like anything, ill give DH a "fun" cereal when older on occasion. Im not going to sit there and eat coco pops and not DC
