WEIRD PHOBIAS

MuMMA8 · 09/05/2022 22:14

I want to hear them....not your run of the mill dentists, spiders, heights, clowns, etc

The weird ones...

KETCHUP...otherwise known as "Mortuusequusphobia"

Began with the crust that forms on the top of a bottle...absolutely turns my stomach. Don't particularly like crusts on anything (old hand creams, mayonnaise etc) but ketchup really tops them all. The smell, the sight. My husband kindly moves any bottles away from tables at cafes/restaurants 😂

Don't get me started on those sachets that have the potential to burst/explode if pressure were to be exerted on one!!

I don't think this is a phobia per se.

But I dread having to touch or be around paper and cardboard. If I'm writing on paper, my bare skin can't touch it, I need long sleeves on or to write at an angle. The feeling of my skin moving over the paper makes my fave screw up and cringe, hair stands on end, I bite my lips, it's awful. I've had nightmares about paper. The sound of DD using certain felt tips on paper is also a nightmare.

Ditto cardboard. I can't run my hand across it, it's awful. The texture. The sound it makes when it rubs together, e.g. when two flaps of a cardboard box rub or get stuck under one another. Literally makes me whole body tense up.

KittyWithoutAName · 22/05/2022 01:59

Trypophobia seems a natural disgust of infestation to me.

I agree. I have it and I always imagine eggs are inside the holes, it's a nest of some kind, or some kind of parasitic disease.

RockinHorseShit · 22/05/2022 02:04

The nylon type fabric used for old fashioned anoraks, umbrellas, cagoules etc. the feel & noise it makes, makes me feel lightheaded & 🤢

Centipedes, the little UK ones. I'm fine with spiders & have no problem picking them up even, same with other bugs, but centipedes make my blood run cold, feeling breathless just typing the word 🤢. Weirdest thing is I've traveled to some exotic places in my youth & plodded my flip flopped feet through paths literally crawling with huge millipedes & quickly got used to it. I've also shared a car in China with foot plus long giant centipede & though uncomfortable & keeping my eyes on where it was, I didn't freak out, or even feel faint... it's inch or so long cousin though, turns me to absolute jelly Confused

Hawkins001 · 22/05/2022 02:24

trichophobia

Hawkins001 · 22/05/2022 02:25

That's not my phobia but an unusual one.

WarOnSlugs · 22/05/2022 03:43

This was very interesting. Trypophobia is basicallly and instrictive, evolved disgust response to protect us. Not an "irrational fear" i.e. phobia that can be "unlearned".

WarOnSlugs · 22/05/2022 03:45

As in, the fear is real! But it is an evoluntionary response that exists for lots of reasons but isn't a "malfunction" that should be "treated" or cured. It's just a highly developed disgust response. Which has persisted because it has kept many of us alive!

Battygirll · 22/05/2022 04:13

Shark eyes. Especially Great White Shark eyes.

It's the flat, inky blackness

I'm trembling just writing this.

KittenKong · 22/05/2022 13:14

Goat eyes. Creepy. Katie Hopkins definitely has very cold eyes. I saw her on the street and I didn’t recognise her at first but I only looked twice because I noticed her eyes .

You shared a car with a centipede. I can just picture it sitting in the passenger seat chilling out. 😂

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/05/2022 15:35

Millipede sorry

DotBall · 22/05/2022 15:47

Cigarettes.
I can’t even look at pictures of them and cigarette ends are even worse. It distresses me if I even stand on one and could never, ever touch one.

I wish 😂

I was in a beaten up old brown ford capri, it had holes punched through the doors & inside walls & floor of the car & this foot plus long giant centipede was having a wail of a time running around the shell of the car & popping itself out of holes inside the car every few minutes. Thankfully pushed back in by the drivers companion, but slightly hairy sharing a car with it

But then, wouldn't things like being scared of heights, also not be an irrational phobia. I mean, for centuries we couldn't fly, wouldn't be safe at heights, so what differentiates an evolved instinctive response to danger Vs phobia when it comes to things that are dangerous for humans

After my recent trip to Spain, 10 cm long agressive centipedes in the sink in my bathroom. The bloody thing reared up to get me. I don’t scream at anything normally, but I did this time.

I have a fear of all creepy crawlies, is there a name for it? Where I grew up centipedes and millipedes are very common, they paralyse me with dear. honestly I don't know what I'd do if I found one in the flat. Burn it down I suppose.

I would have jumped out of the car while it was moving to escape this. Omg I couldn't even finish the whole post, I've read enough to give me nightmares

Oh that is so cute. I'd have had to take him home and keep him as pet. Be a nice playmate for my baby spider. 😂

Which is why I'm so puzzled as to why I didn't react like that to a giant one, but very much would now if it was an inch long centipede. I go to jelly with those things . Can't say I enjoyed it, but so long as I knew where it was & I wasn't sat near a hole, kept my feet on the seat etc, I felt pretty calm

😂 your baby spider wouldn't bother me, sounds cute 😂 though I suspect he would be dinner for a foot long centipede 🥴

Yes. A fear of extreme heights is entirely rational!

I think trypophobia can become so extreme that it's problematic: when people become scared of the texture of strawberries, or bubbles, or the formation of pepper seeds. I meant that at its root, it us a rational fear. As it a fear of heights. And spiders as well.

Carlycat · 24/05/2022 04:48

Dams and waterfalls 🤢

Furrybutts · 24/05/2022 05:27

For me it's cross dressers. It's not too bad if they aren't convincing, but the actual tvs make me want to run away.

Wooden forks or spoons. Can't stand the feeling of the wood in my mouth or against my teeth. I shudder just looking at them.

I have this. I’m having the shudders just reading about it

It's interesting how the size affects your fear.

I'm still scared of them no matter what, but seeing is coiled makes be react much harsher than seeing it doing it's thing walking along. I don't know why. My fear response is much greater when it's curled up doing absolutely nothing 😂

I've had to stop buying the black coil hair ties like these (just buy clear now) because of the number of times I've lost them and they've fallen behind furniture and I've suddenly found them under a bedside table and jumped out of my skin. It's just not worth it.

The mind is such a weird thing as times. Coiled doesn't bother me at all. I was in Kenya & the floor is littered with millipedes, most curled up. They don't bother me. There's something about the fluffiness of little ones & the way they move that turns me to jelly ... feeling it just typing that 🥴

I've a 19 yo DD, I'm forever having a heart attack over the eyelashes she leaves lying around or the cat thinks is a toy🥴😂

OnlyNowIsReal · 20/05/2022 04:28

Do you mind me asking why? I mean, they are weird. But so docile, and gentle, and cool!

Sorry very late replying! I had an inflatable giraffe as a child after a visit to the zoo and my brother put it in my bed in the night so I woke up and saw it in the dark, he then teased me with it, he would put it outside my door so I couldn't get out. I was teased at school about it too which made it worse. I am going to the zoo next week and I have to know where they are as I can't stand the thought of seeing them unexpectedly. I can now look at them though
