WEIRD PHOBIAS

MuMMA8 · 09/05/2022 22:14

I want to hear them....not your run of the mill dentists, spiders, heights, clowns, etc

The weird ones...

KETCHUP...otherwise known as "Mortuusequusphobia"

Began with the crust that forms on the top of a bottle...absolutely turns my stomach. Don't particularly like crusts on anything (old hand creams, mayonnaise etc) but ketchup really tops them all. The smell, the sight. My husband kindly moves any bottles away from tables at cafes/restaurants 😂

Don't get me started on those sachets that have the potential to burst/explode if pressure were to be exerted on one!!

Any kind of machinery submersed in a body of water. Nightmarish.

This 💯

Crumpets. It's the holes,🤢

That's trypophobia. I only discovered what it's called a couple of years ago.

See also mould, and grape hyacinths. 😑

GiraffeInTheSky · 10/05/2022 23:42

DisappearingGirl · 10/05/2022 11:20

Mould. I mean no-one likes mould. But if I pick up an orange or something and it is mouldy I will likely scream and throw it. Bread mould isn't so bad but not great.

However I used to work in a lab and I was fine with mould/fungus on a petri dish. Ditto fungus on wood outdoors.

My mould phobia is horrendous. I think it's linked to the trypophobia, an "over developed" disgust reflex. My sibling used to chase me around with mouldy oranges to make me freak out. Mould makes me shake with fear, it's visceral.

GiraffeInTheSky · 10/05/2022 23:44

Laiste · 10/05/2022 22:06

My own fears are the usual ones plus collections of little things which have naturally grown all uniformally squished together. Like fish eggs. Or holes made my insects. Or leaf mould.

All trypophobia too I expect. Sorry. It's a terrible phobia to have because you never know when it'll spring out on you.

Pinklimey · 10/05/2022 23:49

Men.

MissingGrandstand · 10/05/2022 23:59

Bees. Not wasps, don't mind them, so clearly not a fear of being stung (which is semi-rational). Completely irrational fear of bees only, the more bumbly they are the more sick/sweaty/shaky I feel when I see one.

Perversely I can't leave the room when one comes in, I have to stand at the door shouting for help whilst staring at it, because if I left the room then came back and it was gone and I didn't know where it was (despite knowing there is a 99.9% chance it just went back out of the window) I'd probably have to move.

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 11/05/2022 00:04

@Laiste there's nothing that can be explained. They're just utterly revolting in their entirety.

I also have a baked bean phobia.

GiraffeInTheSky · 11/05/2022 03:07

User839516 · 10/05/2022 04:35

Do NOT Google Trypophobia

Indeed.

It's so messed up.

I also have a baked bean phobia.

I hate to say what the cause of that may be...

Does anyone think that tryphobia has been made worse though by a few photos that come up when you Google it that are hoaxes ? There's a horrible foot one which isn't real and it made me feel funny even though I knew it wasn't actually a real thing. I think it's been linked to things that may not actually be a thing if that makes sense. I feel poor old crumpets deserve a debunking !!!

I am sure such photos don't help it as they just reinforce the overwhelming disgust reaction. That said, I've suffered from this since I was a small child - way before the internet - and only learned the name for it a few years ago so am now grateful to at least know what it is.

BertieBotts · 11/05/2022 07:44

Yes I also have had trypophobia since childhood, I remember reacting to a doormat, crumpets, I put my hand in one of those feel the texture/identify the hidden object things at a children's museum once and it was a dried loofah Shock which really upset me and I refused to ever do one again. Scabs and wounds would freak me out a lot. It's to do with the idea of openings into the body.

Apparently the buttons one is related to trypophobia and sufferers are sometimes ok with metal buttons like on jeans. I think DS2 has both the buttons one and the holes one because he has commented that he doesn't like things before that are slightly trypophobic to me.

BertieBotts · 11/05/2022 07:46

The images seem to stimulate it even in people who haven't had it before. It must tap into some kind of fear of disease or decay.

glad you wrote this - I googled trypophobia when it first came up on this thread and wondered why I felt so grossed out - I’ve never been bothered before = and wondered if phobias are somewhat catching.

Laiste · 11/05/2022 09:29

@ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun thank you. I know it's hard. I can't explain why i don't like the things i don't like so i get it 🤓

I just find the button one utterly fascinating! I think because they are just one thing not a cluster (which is my hate), which we handle a lot because they're useful, and they don't move on their own or anything.

Neverendingdust · 11/05/2022 09:53

Man made objects or structures under water too such as Wave machines in swimming pools, I’m fine in the shallow end with the waves lapping but the mechanism that produces the waves hidden in the dark deep water looks like a portal to hell. The grills in pools also make me uneasy, I remember watching a 999 episode as a youngster where a girl got her hair sucked into one and almost died. Underneath piers too, eugh.

Laiste · 11/05/2022 21:18

Neverendingdust yes! Underneath of piers! Awful!

The beach so happy and light. Then you look/walk under the pier and it's like some horrible dark alternate reality. Menacing almost.

Bopahula · 11/05/2022 21:28

Stickers. Bleurgh!!

I hated my DD getting sticker books. The smaller the sticker the worse it is.
those little ones on apples make my skin crawl. I will never buy loose apples because of them.

KittenKong · 12/05/2022 12:59

Velcro- not so much a phobia but I hate the stuff! Always catching and clicking tights, jumpers, trousers…

Jenasaurus · 13/05/2022 01:44

This would be my worst nightmare.

I hear you sister. Even that photo just made me feel dizzy and hot, thankfully those kind of toilets are getting less common but still…😩

ClinkeyMonkey · 14/05/2022 00:20

Monkey puzzle trees. I hate everything about them and have nightmares about them.

Kat1953 · 14/05/2022 00:29

Since childhood I've experienced fear that makes my blood run cold when I stand right next to something huge and towering...like the foot of a cliff for example. No idea what it's called. Can stand next to tall building fine, but there has to be something looming about whatever it is towering over me.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/05/2022 00:39

Not so much a phobia but more makes me skin crawl.

Paper straws.
Wet cellophane
Dry baby wipes

Scary but mesmerising
Ships in dry dock
Also the other way round things in water that don't belong there also creeps me out.
Has anyone seen The rollercoaster (Star Jet) that ended up in the Ocean as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
