WEIRD PHOBIAS

MuMMA8 · 09/05/2022 22:14

I want to hear them....not your run of the mill dentists, spiders, heights, clowns, etc

The weird ones...

KETCHUP...otherwise known as "Mortuusequusphobia"

Began with the crust that forms on the top of a bottle...absolutely turns my stomach. Don't particularly like crusts on anything (old hand creams, mayonnaise etc) but ketchup really tops them all. The smell, the sight. My husband kindly moves any bottles away from tables at cafes/restaurants 😂

Don't get me started on those sachets that have the potential to burst/explode if pressure were to be exerted on one!!

@ElenaSt omgoodness, I am exactly the same, you are the only other person I know with that same absolute repulsion.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 10/05/2022 21:52

Seaweed, and that leads to a fear of swimming in any open water

StateOfTheUterus · 10/05/2022 21:53

My daughter is scared of rooms with high ceilings. It’s so odd.

Plump82 · 09/05/2022 22:40

Crumpets. It's the holes,🤢

Yes, I was going to say things with holes-those weird seed pod thing people sometimes have as decoration 🤢🤢make my skin crawl.
I also saw a channel 4 (I think it was anyway) thing between the ads just now and it was horrible, it had weird cracked, cliff tops shapes (I think) and also had the same sort of effect

Laiste · 10/05/2022 21:58

People with a fear of buttons please can you come and describe why?

It fascinates me.

I can get a feel for lots of the ones mentioned here - the machinery under water ect. but i can't get into the mindset of fear/dread/hate of buttons.

CrabPuff · 10/05/2022 22:00

Wet wooden spoons. Big or small. Shudder.

Toilets

Another one!! I’ve managed it better since childhood is but I am still very anxious of toilets with high level cisterns. As a child I was TERRIFIED of most toilets (with the associated problems you can imagine!). I sympathise

Laiste · 10/05/2022 22:06

My own fears are the usual ones plus collections of little things which have naturally grown all uniformally squished together. Like fish eggs. Or holes made my insects. Or leaf mould.

Laiste · 10/05/2022 22:07

My eldest DD has a horror of the last bean/pea or whatever left behind in the saucepan.

Pocahontas9000 · 10/05/2022 22:10

Cyclists (when I'm a pedestrian).

Anything touching my fingertips.

Cold wet worktops.

MadameFantabulosa · 10/05/2022 22:10

Buttons and staircases. Particularly open staircases.

Norugratsatall · 10/05/2022 22:14

Belly buttons! 🤢

Laiste · 10/05/2022 22:17

@MadameFantabulosa please can you describe what it is about buttons that you don't like?

the sea on physical maps or getting lost in the sea on google maps

I get this. When I get lost over the sea on Google maps my heart races and I feel sick/panic.

Trypophobia.

Crumpets, lotus flowers, peeling skin...urgh

cakewitch · 10/05/2022 22:24

The thought of Biting into an apple core makes me shudder with revulsion. I can't eat an apple unless I've actually cut it off the core and sliced it into slices.

kieronsmum · 10/05/2022 22:25

Eisoptrophobia made my life a living hell at times

LethargeMarg · 10/05/2022 22:26

Toothpaste - I'm fine brushing my own teeth and helping my kids with theirs but I can't bear seeing other people brushing theirs and can't stand seeing used toothbrushes or tubes of toothpaste outside a bathroom . (New packets are fine) had this since I was young

LethargeMarg · 10/05/2022 22:32

Does anyone think that tryphobia has been made worse though by a few photos that come up when you Google it that are hoaxes ? There's a horrible foot one which isn't real and it made me feel funny even though I knew it wasn't actually a real thing. I think it's been linked to things that may not actually be a thing if that makes sense. I feel poor old crumpets deserve a debunking !!!

takingmytimeonmyride · 10/05/2022 22:46

Cut fingernails or toenails. I can't be around people doing it. I hate pekoe biting their nails. It makes me feel sick. I couldn't do my kids when they were small, their dad had to do it. I don't even like doing my own. But I hate them long. Then I cut them and they feel weird for a day or so. Just ugh. Horrible.

Showers and toilets that aren't mine. I get really really anxious about using them at new places. The toilet thing I think goes back to childhood when I went to the toilet in a cafe and it was absolutely disgusting. Places I got to regularly I have "safe" toilets I use. I had to warn my DP that I'd get anxious about using the shower when we went on holiday.

Janesmom · 10/05/2022 22:48

Not me personally, but the weirdest I’ve known were mushrooms and rubber gloves (in different people, but the same person).

IQuiteLikeCricket · 10/05/2022 23:05

Holes/bumps for me too. I get itchy head and shoulders just thinking about it. I can't remember a time I didn't have it, so assume it's ingrained in some of us.

Also the sea one, as above. Plus anything in the sea which shouldn't be there, is too big or doesn't look 'right'. I was once looking at a house on Google Street view and turned the image around there was a massive old abandoned ship there, in shallow water. I felt like I was going to vomit!

StoryOfANewName · 10/05/2022 23:10

The carpet one for me too! I remember people’s chunky school shoes scraping across those rough carpets in primary school clear as day and it makes me shudder. Never met anyone with the same reaction, so glad to know now that I’m not alone in this one!

NippyWoowoo · 10/05/2022 23:11

Oh and the dark grill in the middle of the pool. Would suck you right it. My toes can't touch it.

Not toothpaste but seeing other people brush their teeth makes me feel very ill. Have to close my eyes when it's on TV, eugh
