WEIRD PHOBIAS

MuMMA8 · 09/05/2022 22:14

I want to hear them....not your run of the mill dentists, spiders, heights, clowns, etc

The weird ones...

KETCHUP...otherwise known as "Mortuusequusphobia"

Began with the crust that forms on the top of a bottle...absolutely turns my stomach. Don't particularly like crusts on anything (old hand creams, mayonnaise etc) but ketchup really tops them all. The smell, the sight. My husband kindly moves any bottles away from tables at cafes/restaurants 😂

Don't get me started on those sachets that have the potential to burst/explode if pressure were to be exerted on one!!

Ah teeth..

I cannot stand anyone trying to show me a wobbly tooth.

DaleTrimont · 16/05/2022 14:40

Trypophobia seems a natural disgust of infestation to me.
Buttons- I know two people with this, I think buttons must be a common thing to get in your mouth as a baby or toddler, and that would make your mother panic, due to the choking risk ? Although they do look like little faces almost, perhaps that is a factor, the holes for eyes ?

Since childhood I've experienced fear that makes my blood run cold when I stand right next to something huge and towering...like the foot of a cliff for example. No idea what it's called. Can stand next to tall building fine, but there has to be something looming about whatever it is towering over me.

@Kat1953 it's called Megalophobia. I know because I have this Grin

Giraffes, although it's not as bad as it was, used to regularly have nightmares about them.

Do you mind me asking why? I mean, they are weird. But so docile, and gentle, and cool!

This is the exploded steam engine, it is the inverse of trypophobia, which I also seem to have, but in my mind they're both the same thing!

Posting pic and getting the hell out of dodge..

This is horrific.

NovRainbow5 · 20/05/2022 04:58

Tall people….like over 6ft tall people. I don’t know why 🙈

hesbeen2021 · 20/05/2022 05:23

I can't touch soil, compost or sand. Makes me actually almost vomit even if a speck touches me. As gardening is my huge joy in life it's makes things tricky but manageable now as long as any part of my skin that could be exposed is covered. So long gardening gloves and always long t shirt and trousers. The beach is harder and I only went to a sandy one if it was cool enough to be fully clothed. Strangely enough though if I can get down to the sea fully clothed I'm OK in the water in bare feet

Florin · 20/05/2022 05:26

Milk no way could I touch it and you couldn’t pay me a million pounds to drink a drop I also count hot drinks in this and I have never drunk one I am guessing as people often put milk in them. Weirdly though my favourite food is cheese!

This would be my worst nightmare.

100%. Even seeing that picture has made me feel sick.

I worked with a woman once who was terrified of exposed pipes inside the house.

She used to drive home from work just for a wee as the loos at work had exposed pipes in there.

When they moved house her husband had to go house viewing without her as she could risk going on in case there were pipes visible.

Mad.

Not mad. Justifiable if they've been through a traumatic experience. I drove home from a pub with high level WCs to have a wee and drove back again as I can't physically go in the room. I've had horrific panic attacks in multi-storey car parks with pipes on the ceilings and in stairwells. It's crippling, not mad.

I’ve always felt completely alone with this fear - im sorry you experience it too but it makes me feel less alone knowing others have it too!
what do you think causes it for you? I’ve had it as long as I can remember and have no idea where it comes from, although my parents house (and many others when I was a child) had one so I wonder if something happened when I was little.when we were out when I was small, my mum used to get so angry with me about it - I wet myself a few times as physically couldn’t use the toilet. Even now I get shaky and panicky if I encounter one - it’s awful! I can just about use one but can’t flush it for the life of me!!

sanityisamyth · 21/05/2022 07:49

@DistressedDamson I can't even use one. I managed it once (in a pub as was on a work's meal) but couldn't shut the door as needed a means of escape so had a friend standing in the doorway so nobody could see me!!

Mine stems from being shut in a bathroom very similar to that picture in my grandmother's house overnight by my sister. She is psychotic. The door handle was on the outside and she put a broom handle through it so I couldn't get out (the door pushed inwards, and turned the light out. The cistern was dripping and it was pitch black. I was in there for hours until my grandmother woke up.

Oh god you poor thing, even reading that has made me feel a bit dizzy.how absolutely terrifying for you. Thank you for sharing it though. I do remember being briefly trapped in a cubicle in a pub but I think I had already got the fear by then, as I was hysterical by the time they managed to unlock the door.
we had ones at school which had a pipe coming out of the middle of the front of the cistern (I guess as some sort of overflow). ( Even writing that has made me feel funny )I couldn’t even go in the room to wash my hands, let alone into a cubicle with one.
the other day I had to use a public toilet with my young son, the toilet had a high level cistern but was white so not quite so awful, but still not great. He was stood in front of me while I was hovering and I was doing the usual “don’t touch ANYTHING!!” but then he looked up at the cistern over my head and I panicked and shouted “DONT TOUCH ANYTHING!!!”. I couldn’t explain to him of course and I would hate for him to develop some kind of fear himself.

sanityisamyth · 21/05/2022 10:48

@DistressedDamson that sounds nasty and very similar! My DS knows that I'm terrified of pipes and is pretty good at reassuring me if we need to go into a multi-storey car park, and is happy to scout ahead to public loos if we're out and about. I've tried to tell that there's nothing actually to worry about and it's just my stupid thing so as not to cause him issues!

Crikeyalmighty · 21/05/2022 10:53

Milk on its own - revolting

DistressedDamson · 21/05/2022 10:58

@sanityisamyth actually my partner does kind of know a little about my fear inasmuch as it relates to those awful European hole in the ground toilets as when we were travelling a few years ago, he’d have to check them first for me when possible. However I felt that fear was justified somehow as they are such hideous things but the fear of overhead cisterns just seems so weird to me (and I also had a partner a few years ago who proper took the piss when I confided in him so I’ve been very reluctant to tell anyone else IRL.
thank you so much for sharing your experience though as it has really helped me feel less freakish and alone. I hope you have a lovely pipe/high cistern-free weekend 😉☀️

Whatisgoingonhere · 21/05/2022 11:07

Yes, I’m the same with the teeth/tooth brushing! Although the horror extends to touching the dcs toothpaste tube and toothbrushes, seeing toothpaste around their mouths (feeling queasy just writing that)…

And then my husband leaves blobs of toothpaste in the sink….I just can’t handle it!!

Not for me, no thanks!

And driving on mountain roads. Walking up them is fine but I tend to panic in the car 😱

Posted earlier on the thread about bumps/holes, now I keep seeing images of Monkeypox. One of my worst nightmares with this phobia. I swear I'd be to take away if I got it, you'd have to knock me out for a fortnight!

Porkmore · 21/05/2022 21:41

Velvet. Makes me want to pass out.

Whoatealltheminieggs · 21/05/2022 21:44

Fish. Never visited an aquarium and don’t walk past the fish counter in the supermarket.

BakedTattie · 21/05/2022 21:58

I’m a hypnotherapist.

no phobia is unusual to me.

More like 4-5 weeks.

It has freaked me out for the same reason. Gross.

OneLittleLady · 22/05/2022 01:10

alektorophobia. fear of filthy disgusting chickens. i cant even look at pictures or drawings of them or cartoon ones and i cry if anyone makes chicken noises

rubydoobydoo · 22/05/2022 01:22

Another koumpounophobe here - that saves me typing the actual word! It's actually refreshing to see it affects others in the same way, makes me think maybe I'm not mad and I actually have a point 😁

It's not so much of a fear as an OCD sort of reaction - they seem dirt and slimy somehow, even though I know they're not, and if I touch one accidentally I have to wash my hands. I hate buying duvet covers if they don't specify what sort if fastenings they have Blush

I have been taking steps to get over it though - I now have two shirt dresses which I really like- one is easier for me to wear than the other but I'm taking the fact that I have worn them a couple of times and nothing bad has happened as progress.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 22/05/2022 01:25

After my recent trip to Spain, 10 cm long agressive centipedes in the sink in my bathroom. The bloody thing reared up to get me. I don’t scream at anything normally, but I did this time.
