Yes so it comes down to whether it was work or not

I don’t know if he will be fined it’s up to the police investigating

but I don’t agree the rules were very different, indoor socialising was just as strict if you were not working

i guess we’ll see re whether it’s deemed work or not.

There are email trails, group whatsapps and amendments to google docs shown right the way through the evening until 1.30am.

Oh and KS's wife and decorator weren't there.

That picture of the champagne is just disgusting.

After watching Suella Braverman on bbcqt last night, and JRM this morning, I feel evil! Unbelievable she is the Attorney General given her ignorance.

Suella got her arse handed to her on a plate time and time again. She came across as ill informed, ignorant and uncaring. The audience didn't let her get away with it.

As for JRM... the message seems to be... the restrictions were unfair. But he didn't expand on whether it was unfair for those unable to see loved ones dying, or go to funerals... or unfair that the government couldn't party with gay abandon.
Oh hang on they did.... but they were fined for it.
He kept saying this was back in February, we have more important things to think about. No idea what he means, and hearing the BBCQT audience last night... no, we aren't moving on, and no, we haven't forgotten.

She's my MP.

She's a useless waste of tax payers money.

She also uses her mums address to be our MP. I don't think this should be allowed. MOs should have to live in the constituency they are respecting IMO. Otherwise what does it really say about what they think of the area and how do they really understand what's going on?

'Keir had a beer.'

I know. I bet there were people up and down the country who would have loved a beer with a group of people at 10pm. Tut tut.

They could have done if working!

MarshaBradyo · 13/05/2022 16:07

Wouldn’t they have had the exemptions throughout anyway?

so no change from before

the idea the rules were markedly different doesn’t follow, it comes down to whether the police think they stopped work to socialise

I don’t have a view on whether they should be fined or not - totally up to police to review WhatsApp etc - just that I question that the rules at the time were different

itsgettingweird · 13/05/2022 16:08

L1ttledrummergirl · 13/05/2022 09:54

Fuck me, I've got to partygate/beer gate.
She conveniently forgot the facts, used whataboutery, and had the cheek to accuse the labour party of hypocrisy and moving the goalposts.
I have no words.

Did she also conveniently forget in our area this year we had a 5% rise in turnout at local elections and Tory's lost 9% of the vote and Labour gained 10?

Tory's have still held as they have historically for decades - but the voting showed tides are turning.

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2022 16:10

Marsha if you are on twitter, check out Adam Wagner @ AdamWagner1
He has a lot of tweets explaining the legal side of things re lockdown laws.

Notonthestairs · 13/05/2022 16:12

May 20 - garden party - Gatherings permitted if essential for work purposes. Only absolutely necessary participants.
June 20 - leaving do & birthday party - gatherings of more than 2 banned unless gathering was reasonably necessary for work purposes.
November 20 - leaving party & ABBA night - as June.
December 20 - unauthorised HQ party, Christmas quiz, department of transport party, two leaving parties, another Christmas quiz, further Christmas party - rules as June. But additionally "you must not have a Christmas lunch or party where that is a primarily social activity and not permitted under the rules in your tier."
Jan 21 - leaving drinks for 2 private secretaries- gathering would need to be reasonably necessary for work purposes.
April 21 - as Jan however additional guidance for constituency meetings (meetings necessary for purposes of campaigning and must be functional not social). Takeaway food obviously permitted.

Roussette · 13/05/2022 16:15

Totally agree. Mine has no constituency office and spends the bulk of his time hundreds of miles away at a farm he has. He turns up near election time. And he hasn't answered my last two polite but critical emails.

Oh and in 2019 was voted 650th out of 650 for responsiveness and openness to his constituents.

if they were campaigning ie working then presumably they won’t be fined

but I kept seeing posts along the lines of it was a year later and completely different rules etc

but overall socialising if you were not working had same strict rules - I’m not following WhatsApp etc because it’ll come down to evidence police have and what they decide

it’s just a question of whether they were working throughout evening or not

Notonthestairs · 13/05/2022 16:17

That's obviously only a summary of workplace rules. Outside of work we were obviously far more restricted for prolonged periods.

Notonthestairs · 13/05/2022 16:41

April 21 - we knew it was airborne (and not lingering in playgrounds or on shopping!), we had the vaccine rollout and we're on Step 2 of the pathway out of national lockdowns. It was very different from a year earlier.

This is what I mean why do people rely on this? The restrictions re socialising if not working were the same

the fine will come down to whether they were working or not, based on the evidence the police have got

partygate fines were due to the same - not working and therefore deemed to be socialising

I have no idea what the outcome will be but it’s the same question being assessed - were they working or not

vaccines, airborne etc won’t play a part in decision

Notonthestairs · 13/05/2022 16:54

Well the restrictions on socialising did change during the course of the pandemic. I just don't have the time to marry up the timelines and type it out. Maybe you can?

I googled and copied & pasted below so I have

here it is

‘You must not socialise indoors except with your household or support bubble. You can meet outdoors, including in gardens, in groups of six people or two households.12 Apr 2021’

the same applies at time of partygate and beergate - work / campaigning are ok, if you were socialising you get a fine

This sets out the rules as they were partying.

Bottom line is... over 100+ FPNs have been issued. They obviously broke the law, Johnson and his wife and no doubt his decorator included, let's see if KS gets one or anyone there at the time.

Rayner completely missed it was a joke

Having a joke for a Prime Minister is bound to make people confused as to what is a joke and what is not a joke. Many of them may consider the last two years a less than entertaining time and one which people should be reluctant to turn into the subject of a rather tasteless joke referencing parties in Downing Street when people were forbidden from visiting dying family members or attending their funerals. Or indeed dying themselves.

Roussette · 13/05/2022 17:08

Thank you. That is my point exactly. Over the last year or two there have been MNers with horrendous stories about losing their Mum or Dad, and not being able to be with them or have a proper funeral. I doubt they'd find it very funny

It's crass and in very bad taste.

If you are upset it’s the organiser - and people who wrote it - you could contact

Rayner was off the mark with who wrote it (it wasn’t OD he just donated) but it’s whoever organised the raffle event

It was a joke at the PMs expense - but anyone is free to say they don’t want that kind of sarcasm which is fair enough

Notonthestairs · 13/05/2022 17:36

There shouldn't have been any Downing Street parties. It's that simple.

I have only just checked in today and was most confused by Rayner not having a sense of humour. Approximately half an hour of head scratching, scrolling and rereading the penny dropped. Even though I kept reading about Jay Rayner, I was still wondering where Angela fitted in....

Smile No worries
We all have things that get to us and I’d likely do the same if it was something that got to me (likely dc related)

'And they'd have been legally entitled to it during the course of a long day on the campaign trail.'

Yes absolutely. Key workers working together in the workplace totally allowed to eat and drink together. Why was cake in the office breaking the law but beer in Starmer's office wasn't though? It is fascinating. The lack of consistency just has most rational folk rolling their eyes at this stage.

Tell you what I'm surprised at, how quiet the media are on the fact we didn't have the highest death rate afterall! After making up that we did for 2 years they're very quiet on this aren't they?!

@JaniieJones You may recall that in 2020 there was a regular series of daily Downing Street briefings on the pandemic. Can you perhaps help me by telling me at which one it was said that it was absolutely fine for people to work together to drink together.
Presumably the same applies to schools where children of key workers were working together and so could have had birthday parties together like the Prime Minister. On which day did the Prime Minister make it clear that such events were permitted?
