Bringing washing home from holiday- please tell me I am not the only one

I am on my third load of washing after having been away for 5 days. I am
still no nearer to seeing the bottom of my washing basket😂. What is worse is that we went self catering so there was a washing machine in the flat and I was washing while we were away. How does this happen? It must be some kind of trickery as I didn’t think I packed that many clothes. As a sanity saver does this also happen to others 😀?

I always bring all washing home from a holiday, no way I’m doing laundry on holiday!

DH tends to do most of our washing though, as long as the wash basket isn’t overflowing I leave him to it.

tomatoandherbs · 30/04/2022 08:06

Can’t understand why if washing machine there?

if washing machine there, I come back with very little indeed.
when on holiday in hotel, my holiday gift to myself (single parent) is I pay for washing to be laundered and ready for morning of our last day.

tomatoandherbs · 30/04/2022 08:06

I dont mind doing washing in holiday.

come back from day at beach or walking, children in showers / TV and me pottering around. No hardship to shove things in washing machine

Also because i am not paying for it as such, I use the tumble dryer without any thought whatsoever!

stairgates · 30/04/2022 08:07

How many of you went???:)

PermanentTemporary · 30/04/2022 08:08

How many of you are there?

In general I think people launder clothes far too often but if you have young kids it is always like an explosion in a dry cleaners after coming back.

Packing much lighter does help...

EatSleepReplete · 30/04/2022 08:08

We always holiday in the UK & always make sure we get somewhere with a washing machine. Hate coming back with mountains of laundry. We also try to do as much as possible just before we go, & hang it to dry (inside) while we're away.

RandomMess · 30/04/2022 08:10

I reckon someone has dumped all their clothes in the washing basket rather than put away.

Toponeniceone · 30/04/2022 08:11

Yes it's really overwhelming! The best thing I ever did was buy a big drum machine when mine died. I also now have a falling down conservatory which is great for drying clothes, 2 washing lines and a tumble dryer, but can't really afford to run that anymore!

Toponeniceone · 30/04/2022 08:12

I also police what goes in the machine. Definitely lazy fuckers not wanting to put clothes away.

A580Hojas · 30/04/2022 08:13

I think it's just you! We usually go on holiday to a hot country and always self cater in a villa with a washing machine. We take advantage of the great drying weather and do laundry as we would at home and come home with suitcases full of clean line-dried clothes. Much easier than doing it all when we get back to our wet country with God-awful August weather.

OhRiRi · 30/04/2022 08:14

We usually go away mon-fri, 2 adults and a toddler. Usually come back with 1.5-2 black bags of laundry.

This time we stayed somewhere with a washing machine - came back with a carrier bag which included a large bath towel. Game changer! Admittedly we didn't always fill the washing machine like we would at home (it was put on twice at 2/3 full)

Mrsjayy · 30/04/2022 08:15

sometimes when the kids were small and if there was wet or really soiled clothes I'd find a laundrette but generally I'd wait till I got home I used to pack for a month though 🙄

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 30/04/2022 08:20

This was one of my favourite things about holidaying in Bali! There are laundries everywhere that take all your filthy washing and return it clean and pressed and smelling glorious for very little money, I think last time I paid about $20 AUD for a suitcase full, and it was heaven coming home with all our clothes clean and smelling of Bali.

nearlyspringyay · 30/04/2022 08:21

I don't go on holiday to do washing so just suck it up when we get back, but 5 days, 3rd load, how many of your s what on earth were you wearing?!

artisanbread · 30/04/2022 08:22

We self cater and I'll usually do one wash per week we are there. Just means we don't have to take as many clothes or bring as much back. We sometimes camp for a week then go to a cottage for a week so I wash some of the camping bedding etc.

Sprogonthetyne · 30/04/2022 08:27

I have a pretty big washing machine, but I don't think I'd even have taken 3 loads of washing. My suitcase holds about one load.

PrincessRamone · 30/04/2022 08:28

Get each member of the family (including the kids) to do their own laundry. Game changer.

Okbutnotgreat · 30/04/2022 08:29

Always wash everything after we’ve been away because when we’re going everything is neatly folded but coming home everything gets rammed in together clean or dirty. Quick wash, on the line and job done though easier in my mind than reality.

Melzbelz · 30/04/2022 08:31

Only three of us 😅

Mrsjayy · 30/04/2022 08:33

3 of you ! what were you wearing how many changes a day are we talking 😀

Melzbelz · 30/04/2022 08:34

Though we did have to provide our own bed linen and towels etc so that accounts for some of the laundry mountain

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 30/04/2022 08:34

Please tell us that you've got multiple children to need to be doing that much washing!
We don't have kids, so it's one load when we get back and I'm done. But I tend to only wear about 10% of what I take on holiday and I'm very much a "if it passes the sniff test it goes back into the drawer" type of person.

Mrsjayy · 30/04/2022 08:36

Fair enough towels and bedding!

whoruntheworldgirls · 30/04/2022 08:38

If the option is there is much rather do the washing on holiday so nothing to do once home, but that's going to hot locations where it dries quickly.
I've just had 3 loads of laundry between 3 people after a 2 week holiday in Spain! How much did you guys wear?? 😂
