Bringing washing home from holiday- please tell me I am not the only one

I am on my third load of washing after having been away for 5 days. I am
still no nearer to seeing the bottom of my washing basket😂. What is worse is that we went self catering so there was a washing machine in the flat and I was washing while we were away. How does this happen? It must be some kind of trickery as I didn’t think I packed that many clothes. As a sanity saver does this also happen to others 😀?

I tend to do perhaps one load a week when there then have shit loads when we get back.

We are all different I know.
I take very old clothes with me eg old pants and nightie Old t shirts, trousers etc. I wear them on hols and then bin them. I don’t need to do a big wash when I come home. Yes there are some things I do bring home and wash but lots stay on hols in their bin there.
I know many don’t take old things on hol., but it works for me.

This. Take the odd smart thing but everything else is on its last outing. At the end of the day no-one we know is going to see us so it doesn't matter if me or dc are looking a bit shabby.

declutteringmymind · 01/05/2022 21:09

I take it to the laundrette and get a service wash. I just factor it into the holiday cost. It's just not a proper holiday for me if I have to catch up on chores.

I think it's because you wash when you are there but don't iron and then you get home and think Oh I may as well wash it all again .Plus it's been mixed with some dirty clothes.

Fucking hell. What a waste of water and energy. What is wrong either not washing on holiday or you know separating your clean and dirty - have you heard of plastic bags?!!

BluebellCockleshell123 · 01/05/2022 21:20

We take minimal stuff on holiday & always book villas & apartments with washing machines. We’ll take enough clothes for a 3 or 4 days and wash them when they’re all dirty & wear the same stuff again for the next few days.
There’s 5 of us in the family and I’ve never found it too much bother esp when everything dries so quickly in the heat. I much prefer doing the laundry little and often than having to do a mega clothes organisation before & after the holiday!

Luculentus · 01/05/2022 21:30

That is a ludicrous amount of washing. Were you changing sheets every day or something? Otherwise you must be washing clean clothes.

I make full use of the washing machine if I'm self-catering, especially now. It's no great hassle, and I reckon we should get our money's worth rather than run up electricity bills at home.

I'd prefer to use my own machine, rather than one used by loads of others

What?

MrsRinaDecker · 01/05/2022 21:32

I’ve never done laundry on holiday, always have loads when I get home! At least one load each of dark / light / coloured / towels. Possibly a delicates load if I’ve taken fancier dresses. I do try to be all caught up before I leave though, and that I leave clean pants in the drawer for the day I get home!

Why would they be mixed together? I either separate out the dirty stuff into one suitcase, or put it in carrier bags.

I only use a washing machine on holiday for swimwear or if it needs done. I'd prefer to use my own machine, rather than one used by loads of others.

How do you cope with the fact that you are staying in a room and sleeping on a bed and between sheets that have been slept in by loads of others? What about the furniture, crockery, cutlery, glass, utensils, pans, oven, kettle, microwave, washing up facilities, bath, basin, towels, loo etc etc that loads of people have used?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 01/05/2022 21:54

I tend to sort the dirty laundry on holiday into different cases for when we come home. So the 30 load in one case, the 60 in another.

willowstar · 01/05/2022 21:57

If we go to visit family for out holidays, I tend to do the washing while I am there, especially if in Spain where it dried outside in an hour or so. Much easier than at home. If we are away in caravan in the UK, I organise all laundry in to big bags as we go along then come home and get started straight away. There are four of us we usually have a lot as we seem to get through loads of towels from showers, being at the beach most days, and lots of clothes. I exercise when we are away so have exercise clothes, day clothes and sometimes evening clothes if we are going anywhere nice. Add in the caravan bedding and it can take a few days to get through it all when we get home.

Longdistance · 01/05/2022 22:04

Maybe wear your clothes more than once? I don’t know what the answer is?
I have a holiday home with no washing machine (yet) and went away for two weeks in Easter. I had 6 loads and that included towels and bedding. I have a 9kg washer, that helps.

If it's a week or more I will do some washing on holiday (we always go self catering if with kids) but there's still a ridiculous amount when we get home.

wooo69 · 01/05/2022 22:19

2 adults here, returned from 2 weeks In Lanzarote early hours of this morning. I have done one load of lights, load of coloured in now. The pile of shorts, cotton/linen trousers and long sleeve tops I took for evenings looks like another 2 loads. There is also 5 beach towels which will be another load. This does include probably one load that was in the washing bin that I didn’t get done before we went.

we had 22kg + 10kg hand luggage each but we didn’t take hand luggage only a backpack with electrical items and my handbag. Our two suitcases weighed 37kg going including toiletries that we used. We had 32kg coming back.
we had to be out of the apartment at 11am yesterday and flight wasn’t until 9.30 pm so we were at the pool/ pool bar all day and I actually discovered that next to the toilets there were two coin operated washing machines. If I had known previously I would have tried to get a couple of loads done.

browneyes77 · 01/05/2022 22:29

I take enough clothes for the week and some extras so I have a good choice of outfits and then I wash everything I’ve worn when I get home.

I could not be bothered to wash clothes whilst I’m away. I’m there for a break, not to do washing 😂

jewishmum · 01/05/2022 23:50

I always just pack enough to last each of us for however many days we are away.

Ticksallboxes · 02/05/2022 00:07

For years I've been following the advice I read in a tabloid, I think, which is plan for your holiday, then double your budget and halve your clothes.

Subsequently I can pack for a holiday in about 15 minutes and my DH is always flabbergasted...but washing is minimal! We have two teens as well.

BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 02/05/2022 01:32

The same OP. Especially if having to provide bed linen and towels.

flowersfromheaven · 02/05/2022 11:18

I also bring all my washing home but I always feel like I need another holiday after doing all the washing.

Valleymum2 · 02/05/2022 13:59

Not just you! Always happens To me too. Think it’s sometimes to do with people
packing their clean and dirty stuff together so it all ends up int eh washing basket when get home. With the cost of electricity I’ll be more careful next time
sway. I can’t bear coming home to mountains of laundry.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/05/2022 17:31

"At the end of the day no-one we know is going to see us so it doesn't matter if me or dc are looking a bit shabby."

Except that you take more photos than at any other time. Plus my holidays are often to visit friends I don't see often so I want my best clothes.

PeachyPeachTrees · 02/05/2022 18:39

We usually have self catering holiday and I do laundry while there. Means I pack less and don't have a mountain to get through when back home.
