Bringing washing home from holiday- please tell me I am not the only one

I am on my third load of washing after having been away for 5 days. I am
still no nearer to seeing the bottom of my washing basket😂. What is worse is that we went self catering so there was a washing machine in the flat and I was washing while we were away. How does this happen? It must be some kind of trickery as I didn’t think I packed that many clothes. As a sanity saver does this also happen to others 😀?

I love it if there's a washing machine in a holiday let. I've been known to take detergent to wash in the sink. Reduces the amount if undies we need to take.

JADS · 01/05/2022 19:11

I'm one of those cheapskates that tries to wash and tumble dry as much as possible while I'm away. I tend to choose an air bnb with a tumble dryer if I can. Not my electric bill. We don't have a tumble dryer at home so it feels like a holiday luxury.

I went travelling around the world three years ago and can live long term on cabin baggage now. Service washes are generally really cheap, and there’s frequently a LOT of laundrettes in close proximity in a major town.

This was me, we went for a week and I did about three loads (never normally do washing on holiday unless abroad in a villa, but hate dirty washing lying around/contaminating the suitcase on the way home). Spent three days doing washing when we got back, admittedly some of it was from before we went, but still ..

Franklin12 · 01/05/2022 19:28

If you have a washing machine when abroad surely all you need to do is shove in a hole? Warm weather will dry in a flash. What is not to like??

cherish123 · 01/05/2022 19:29

I only use a washing machine on holiday for swimwear or if it needs done. I'd prefer to use my own machine, rather than one used by loads of others.

User3568975431146 · 01/05/2022 19:30

Can't beat having a washing machine on holiday. There's five of us and we usually come home with just night clothes to wash.

Not sure how you've managed to still have such a load to do 💐

Franklin12 · 01/05/2022 19:31

If I know there is a washing machine I take some powder or tablets and seem to do about 1 load a day. There are three of us. It’s very satisfing

ArtVandalay · 01/05/2022 19:33

We went away at the end of Feb. We did the mountain of washing when we got home, but it is all still sitting in baskets in the utility room hoping someone will iron it. We have been back 9 weeks!

blueshoes · 01/05/2022 19:37

Don't understand why OP has so much laundry to do or why you'd actively choose to do it on holiday, when you should be relaxing.

I tend to put a load of laundry at home just before leave and one when we get back. The only time I do laundry on holiday is if we are away for more than a week.

This thread must attract people who do 3 lots of laundry a day for a family of 4.

gogohm · 01/05/2022 19:41

The last few times I've booked somewhere with laundry facilities on 2 week holidays, halves the washing

ArtVandalay · 01/05/2022 19:46

If we go sc, we always do all of the washing before we come home.

fetchacloth · 01/05/2022 19:52

I'm the same OP.
I don't go away on holiday to do the laundry. What's the point of that? 😎

TortolaParadise · 01/05/2022 20:05

It sure does happen to me.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/05/2022 20:10

I can't understand those saying "I don't go on holiday to do the laundry". Especially if you're in a villa in Spain or somewhere where it's roasting and washing dries within an hour on a line then how is it a chore? It's not like you're using a washboard and mangle. You just shove it in the machine, go off for a swim or a sunbathe or a glass of sangria, and spend 5 mins hanging it up in your bikini getting a suntan and enjoying the sights and sounds of the garden with the cicadas and hummingbird moths etc. I'd far rather do that than be tied to looking at the sky for rain clouds with 3 loads of washing when I'm back home and back to work FT.

I mean, if you're in a little apartment tripping over each other with no garden or hanging space then it's obviously a different matter. I'd leave it till I got home then.

I think it's just you! We usually go on holiday to a hot country and always self cater in a villa with a washing machine. We take advantage of the great drying weather and do laundry as we would at home and come home with suitcases full of clean line-dried clothes. Much easier than doing it all when we get back to our wet country with God-awful August weather.

This.

SarahSissions · 01/05/2022 20:24

i drop my suitcases in to the laundrette for a service wash and give the lady £20 tip on the way back home and then just pick them up the following day.

Okbutnotgreat · 30/04/2022 08:29

Always wash everything after we’ve been away because when we’re going everything is neatly folded but coming home everything gets rammed in together clean or dirty. Quick wash, on the line and job done though easier in my mind than reality.

This is so stupid. You put your dirty clothes in a carrier bag and wash those.

LoisLane66 · 01/05/2022 20:29

Why is this thread under two headings?

Darbs76 · 01/05/2022 20:34

When we got to Florida we always hire a villa and I always come home with a case of clean clothes. I mean there’s a huge washing machine and a huge dryer and it takes all of 5 mins to load each, then fold to put in the case. It’s far better than coming back with 4 cases of dirty laundry and struggling to get it dry as I’ve no dryer at home. So yep I love washing on holiday!

Rainallnight · 01/05/2022 20:35

I deal with this by handing all of our holiday laundry to the local launderette for a service wash when we get back.

leatherboundbooks · 01/05/2022 20:43

I'm afraid that I hated it when we went away camping with the children and came back with a fortnight's lot of washing to deal with, actually even just the 2 of us, how long it took to get everything clean and dry, so it took so long after that to put it all away, on top of putting camping stuff away. And how much space all those clothes took up in the car

Nowadays when I go camping for a fortnight I usually do a wash so I don't need to take so much and don't have so much when I get back

No, I don't like washing on holiday, but I don't like spending a long time when I get home doing all that laundry

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 01/05/2022 20:44

I came on here as I thought you were going to say is it just me that looks forward to doing their holiday washing and I was going to say no really do too!! Just me then Blush
You know you really don't have to do it all in one go! I bet you're not down to your last pair of pants! Just feed it in over the next couple of weeks. No need to let it ruin you holibob buzz!

Cantdoitallperfectly · 01/05/2022 20:46

Laundrette when you get home. Bag it up and collect it a day later.

RitaFaircloughsWig · 01/05/2022 20:55

I think it's because you wash when you are there but don't iron and then you get home and think Oh I may as well wash it all again .Plus it's been mixed with some dirty clothes.
