So Durham police have caved to the Daily Mail and are going to investigate the constituency meeting 🙄

Tories will hang on to this because presumably they'll need a distraction from the Sue Grey report.

Notonthestairs · 06/05/2022 13:32

Just realised there hadn't been any official confirmation of the Durham story.

InMySpareTime · 06/05/2022 13:44

It's breaking on BBC now.

IF a breach is found and Starmer is fined I suspect he'd resign. Which will rather highlight Johnson's behaviour.

ClaudineClare · 06/05/2022 13:55

I'm glad they are re-investigating. Durhamgate can be settled one way or another.

Tories need to be careful what they wish for, though. If Starmer did breach the rules and is fined how will Johnson handle it? He can't call for Starmer's resignation, can he? He can't say it's "one rule for the Labour Party and another for the rest of us". He can't call Starmer a hypocrite or a liar without attaching those labels to himself also.

the80sweregreat · 06/05/2022 14:11

They need to settle the Durham question.
As much as i am not a conservative voter myself , it'll hang over everything if they don't do this I suppose. It'll all drag on no doubt but it needs to be cleared up, they can't go on about the number 10 parties and have this going on in the background.

DuncinToffee · 06/05/2022 14:35

It's comparing apples with pears but it will keep the squirrels happy, after all they have invested so much time into that beer.

1 event versus how many?

Roussette · 06/05/2022 14:38

I'm glad they are investigating it too. Then the DM can find some new headlines bring on meghan markle again

What I hope the police spell out is... the rules were 'this' for cakegate. The rules were 'this' for beergate.
Therefore there is no case to answer.

BBC Projected National Share for GB, from Sir John:

Lab - 35%
Con - 30%
LD - 19%
Oth - 16%

As I said, matches Miliband, who didn’t go on to win GE2015, but then UKIP support significant, this time LD & Greens…

LD: +13
Green: +11
Conservatives: -40
Independents: -13

ClaudineClare · 06/05/2022 15:11

Labour has taken Worthing. This seems to be quite a big deal, because apparently five years ago Labour had no councillors there.

Who knows what will happen in a GE, but I'm right now I am taking great pleasure in seeing the Tories get a bashing. So richly deserved after all the lies and corruption.

newnamethanks · 06/05/2022 15:16

Worthing! Hurrah !

Worthing! Hurrah !

When considered with West Oxfordshire, Westminister and so on rather suggests that Shire Tories are quite fed up.

Whereas perhaps the red wall constituencies even though their majorities are smaller might be less vulnerable at the next GE. Does Boris pivot to please the Shires and risk alienating the Red Wall or accept that the Shires are lost?

Sky news election projection based on

"Con 278
Labour 271
SNP 50
Lib Dems 28
Other 23

Con 48 seats short of a majority

So that would probably put a Labour led administration in No10 if they can work with SNP, Lib Dems and others"

@jgw1 David Gauke has written on that in the New Statesman. Effectively that Home Counties Tory MPs will be feeling pretty uncomfortable right about now.

Also Huntingdonshire council is no longer Tory - which used to include John Major's constituency.

Notonthestairs · 06/05/2022 15:49

Huntingdonshire is a big surprise to me at least!

Do we think JRSmug is concerned his constituency has a Lib Dem council now?

Roussette · 06/05/2022 15:56

Somerset yes yes yes to LD. I would love this to see off Rees Mogg.

And -50 seats in Scotland for Tories

Tories would lose almost 90 seats at general election on basis of local election results, says Sky News analysis

The SNP's price for this is another Independence referendum. The clue is in the name SNP. They won't want to be Labour's poodle.

the80sweregreat · 06/05/2022 15:57

The conservatives won't be too concerned about the Lib dems, they tend to veer to the right when it suits them after all (more recently and historically too)

Roussette · 06/05/2022 15:58

jgw great minds think alike.

His tweet of 'In this land of hope and glory don’t forget to vote Tory' looks a bit hollow now doesn't it?

I hope Nanny is placing a damp flannel on his forehead to calm him down, as I type Grin
