Really interesting comment piece in The Times from Daniel Finkelstein, it's called "Six Pieces of Luck Boris Johnson needs to stay a winner"
I can't to link to it for some reason.

But it suggests that Tory MP's might do well to recognise the whole raft of issues need to swing in their direction - party gate, cost of living and economy, Labour not gaining ground, the party finding another Brexit like issue to rally behind and zero scandals (!).

He says they all need to come good if Johnson is to stay on.

Zero scandals, yes very amusing.

The s*n

EXC: Met police bodyguards looked on as Sir Keir Starmer and Labour allies consumed £200 of curry…

Fresh pressure for Durham Police to open investigation into #beergate as it emerges fellow cops were witnesses…

That's a good price for curry for 30 people Wink

Did they bring it in a suitcase?

Blossomtoes · 04/05/2022 12:59

Hopefully this link should work for the Finkelstein article.

Looking at Twitter it seems Conservatives likely to lose around 300 tomorrow - nothing close to the whopping 800 mentioned in dispatches over the weekend.
Then what? A re-shuffle to distract. Patel must be vulnerable & what will Sunak do?

Short thread.

Fair point jgw1 if it were Portillo v. any of the current front bench then I suppose I'd have to choose him. What have we sunk to in this country that we're choosing 'least worst' options?

Tbh I think that's how we ended with with Johnson in the first place!

You only have to read MN to see .... but he's not Corbyn!

newnamethanks · 04/05/2022 16:35

No, disagree, that was an active choice of 'who's worst? let's have him. He's greedy, amoral and lazy. There is no-one better at naked self interest. He's our man'. 😤

Reading that thread and the accompanying article, there's talk of Liz Truss replacing Sunak as Chancellor? Doesn't a Chancellor have some sort of financial background and experience? I remember reading Truss's history at one point, and she certainly has not.
She sounds the most unlikely Chancellor ever. If that happens, imagine the photo ops on budget day Shock

Nobody would want to be Chancellor right now would they?
Who would benefit from Truss doing a less than stellar job?

I have posted on here before. Sunak clearly is ideally placed to be Foreign Secretary given he wants to be foreign so a job swap seems like an ideal suggestion.

The Times reporting that cabinet reshuffle will be delayed to the summer - I assume it will be a sop after the Sue Gray report is published. A good way to dangle jobs.

From the Guardian-

"Officials involved in the gatherings under investigation believe it is likely that Johnson will get another two fines – one for Cain’s leaving do and another for the flat party on the same evening. However, Johnson is reported to be convinced he will not receive any further fines." Because he's lied. My italics.

I do so wish that Johnson could be had up in court for something, and when he started his waffle and piffle the Judge told him to shut up and give a straight answer - and then hopefully, give him a nice prison sentence for perjury.

Unlikely to happen, it’s a different class of criminal. BJ would have to be hiding bodies and making skin suits to see the inside of a courtroom.

I wonder how many other people have received questionnaires instead of being questioned by an officer when they’re suspected of an offence.

I think the point is that you have to ask for a questionnaire rather than an interview and frankly if other people are not as clever as Boris to ask for a questionnaire it just goes to show why Boris is our glorious leader.

I've voted at lunchtime. Very quiet. Saw 5/6 others. Spoke to those manning the desks and they said it had been busy first thing but very quiet since which isn't a great surprise.
I was surprised to read that my town is a Tory target. We've had no leaflets and I haven't seen a single sign up locally.

Have you checked in your fridge for leaflets?

I have all manner of things can hide in them.

DuncinToffee · 05/05/2022 14:32

They don't identify as Conservative anymore

But if they don't, how can we be sure they know what a woman is?

Herbarium · 05/05/2022 14:42

I would say it's about time that ANY opposition was viable. Anything is better than this slow erosion of of our country and our rights.
I sometimes wonder if anyone else can see how fast the UK is going down the toilet.

They put the word local in front of it, preferably in capital letters, and use a different shade of blue, like teal or green.

DuncinToffee · 05/05/2022 15:56

Good question, maybe one of our Tory friends could answer it

itsgettingweird · 05/05/2022 16:07

I will vote on the way home from ds swim training.

It'll be about 7.30pm. Usually when our Tory councillors are out and about because they can catch those working for private organisations who vote on way home from work.

I wonder if they'll dare ask me again this year if I'll vote for them 🤷‍♀️🤣🤣🤣

Peregrina · 05/05/2022 17:06

Assuming that they won't get your vote, you can tell them that Of Course you will. After all, lying through his teeth is what their dear Leader does.
