Things that are not fit for purpose

I am finding this increasingly of late, and it's driving me nuts. Is there no product testing any more?

I ordered Tippex with my weekly shop, and they sent me an alternative that looks like a pen. You're meant to squeeze the pen for the tippex to come out. Husbands grip is strong and it works for him. No matter how hard I squeeze, I'm unable to get any liquid to come out. So who is that made for? Just men?

Packets of ham/bacon, where it says "Peel here". Nope, the plastic just rips randomly, so you have to cut the whole thing off.

Milk cartons when you pour, the milk goes everywhere because the spout doesn't work.

Writing on things that is the same colour as the item, so you can't read it. See also, best before dates on eggs - can't read as it's always smeared.

Shredders that get paper jams within minutes.

Public loos - often the bolt doesn't align with the "bolt holder" (?) so you can't lock the door.

Train loos - no water in the taps.

Dog harnesses that dogs can back out of.

Aargh..........

Jars of gherkins. Much loved by me and no doubt by older, less strong people. Can I open the lid without giving myself a hernia? No, I fucking can’t. Even my DH, big strong bloke, has problems. Using those grippy things doesn’t help. I have resorted to making a hole in the lid with a screwdriver. I know you don’t want them leaking, but it’s not Fort Knox!
Soak them in a bowl or sink of hot water.

The CMS!

ExH managed to convince them he earned £34,000, when he actually earned £134,000. I told them the truth. Wouldn't believe me as I had no proof. Then, he didn't provide proof of earnings one year and they got his salary direct from HMRC. Which showed I was right. So, I got a recalculation for that one year. Not any subsequent years though, where he maintained the lie. They believed him, even knowing that he lied before. I took it to the Ombudsman. They ruled in his favour. WTF!

I can believe that op. Here's your mate. Went to court, ruled in my favour. Nothing has changed. Dickheads the lot of them.

They would be better off giving the investigation work to single mums reliant on the payments to manage each other's cases anonymously.

I sat in court whilst the CMS argued he earned £25k a year. Whilst I pointed out he'd been claiming a £40k dividend every few months. Court agreed with me and he still doesn't pay.

Hit the corner of the lid with the back of a kitchen knife in 4 separate places. Breaks the seal. Pop! Easy. I used to work in a kitchen and had to open gazillions of jars by hand. Forever grateful to the chef who taught me that trick.

Also - and these are usually at the back of the neck, just to maximise the rage - tiny buttons with tiny loop fastenings. Every time you think you've made the loop big enough to get the button through, you haven't and the button slips out of your fingers!

I remember throwing an item out of my bedroom window the other week as it was annoying me so much, even more annoyingly I can't remember what it was.

THIS! I have 2 dresses I avoid wearing to work, despite liking both, because every time I end up sweating and swearing and it's not even 7:30am! (I tend to keep sweating and swearing for later in the day).

Bloody trainer socks. I do not own a pair that don't eventually fold up under your instep. Infuriating!

pop socks. I need to wear the flesh coloured ones at times for work- especially this time of year: too cold for bare feet and loafers/pumps, too warm for socks, or if you're wearing trousers other than black/ grey you need a neutral colour. Either you need full pop socks, which are annoying round the knee, or the ankle ones which are exposed every time you cross a leg or sit down- not attractive!

iklboo · 15/04/2022 19:39

@Cherrysoup - we use a square of this to get lids off. It's really good.

Sellotape and a certain brand of cheap flea treatment !
Just checked the foil I bought from Tesco and it also says it is wrapping foil and not to put in the oven. I have been using it in the oven for the last few months.

I can never open jars, any jars, without either one of those grip things, and if that fails I bang the edge of the lid against a wall or worktop until I hear the seal go and then it will unscrew. The trick is to not get so annoyed that you smash the jar, just hit it smartly and listen. Usually works in 3 bangs.
Tigertigertigertiger · 15/04/2022 23:11

Thank you for teaching me there are 2 types of foil.

pearljamm · 15/04/2022 23:13

I've just checked my foil and it's wrapping foil! I thought it was just thinner because it was the own brand. Who knew 😆 not noticed any difference when using it in the oven if anyone is interested!

My husband.

Lol 😂

MardyOldGoth · 16/04/2022 00:18

The 'pay in a cheque' function on the Barclays app. FFS, it takes the photo itself and then moans that the photo quality isn't good enough! Puts me on the bloody ceiling every time. Piece of shit thing!

Royal Mail- 24 hour tracked that takes 4 days.

Birthday card sent First class- 7 days and counting...

LoveMyPiano · 16/04/2022 00:35

WD40 will helpp remover sticker residue.

I bought a perfectly simple storage box to keep spinach "fresh" out of the bag. The sticker should have peeled off quite nicely - and it mostly did - apart from a perfect sticky imprint right across two sides. Tried everything from soapy water to methylated spirits. Then WD40 got it off SO easily!!
Shan't name the store, but name starts with A.

The box is otherwise great, and does the job perfectly!

Mobility scooters. Can't overcharge, can't undercharge, can't use too often, can't use too little, doesn't do 3/4 of a single mile before screaming their heads off, can't handle rain or moderately damp weather or will scream their heads off, can't wash with water as flannel clean only, battery goes flat within months and not worth the £1000s they cost.

Kids shoes Angry

Bloodybridget · 16/04/2022 00:42

A jar key works perfectly for breaking the seal - Lakeland and Robert Dyas sell them.
Agree with most of pps. But I tried the beeswax wraps as substitute for cling film, couldn't get on with them at all; they didn't wrap tightly, and got hard and flaky after a few uses.

The sinks that were in my bathrooms. New build, they're designed so if you get any water on the back ledge, it just pours off the side Confused
Me "you can take those out and replace them with a sink that DOES THE ONE JOB it is meant to"
They replaced them Grin

@LightDrizzle

Those stick-on hooks that promise to bear a weight of 12kg or similar nonsense.

I clean the surface with white spirit, dry it, follow all instructions, hang a brolly on it for a couple of days and find both brolly and hook on the floor of the cupboard. Every time. I don’t know why I fall for it.

These are currently holding 3 sets of keys and have been for months. No budging and I didn't even clean the surface, just stuck it on the side of an IKEA kallax

Snoopsnoggysnog · 16/04/2022 01:28

To open jars, surely people just run them under hot tap for a couple of mins to expand the lid, then open lid with a tea towel?? Confused

BookkeeperBobby · 16/04/2022 01:35

Your keys weigh 12kg? Where do you live? The Tower Of London?

Definitely non PVC noncling film. What a pointless item that is.

My suggestion is The Independent website. No to cookies, no to subscription, really now to subscription, what's all this shit on my screen, continue reading, fucking hell more shit, what the fuck is this buffering window that's suddenly taking over the world, stab the wee cross, no the cross, not the advert you fucks, AAARGH fuck me that video's loud, back button, fucking back button, ah cunt it all, close fucking window.

FartSock5000 · 16/04/2022 01:40

Pet shops!

Most of the aquariums are too small for the most commonly bought fish, dog treats are utter rubbish like rawhide and lots of pet foods are full of sugar and grains making them crap.

Expensive kit like filters are also often too weak.

Reptile enclosures too small etc

The general public trust pet shops to sell them the right things for happy, healthy pets but the whole industry is a money grab with no real thought on what is best for the animals.

Searbelts in cars. Even on the lowest setting they end up cutting across my neck. I'm 5ft 4, so not particularly short.
Totally agree with this. I use a child's padded adapter to help

The sink in our old flat was rectangular and the base was perfectly flat so it DIDN’T ACTUALLY DRAIN. Even water, let alone if you’d had the temerity to spit toothpaste foam into it. It just washed it vaguely towards one of its fucking stupid corners where it sat hideously til you manually scrubbed/swooshed it towards the plug hole. Come the fuck on.
halfsiesonapotnoodle · 16/04/2022 02:44

Toilet paper. Leaving multiple tiny bits all over labia and causing irritation. Really horrible.

1forAll74 · 16/04/2022 03:56

The lids on jars will open ok, if you turn the jar upside down, and bang it on the floor a couple of times, and then it should open ok. I don't mean smash it hard on the floor. I usually do this on the floor mat in my kitchen.

Sock toes

I always go through them in 3 wears or less, whether they are part of a cheap multipack, or £10/pair.

Are your toenails really long? I can only wear toe socks (sensory processing disorder makes me suicidal with regular socks, feel like peeling my skin off) but even though I’m not delicate with them at all, I haven’t destroyed any yet, and I only buy cheap ones. Have you tried the men’s ones? Maybe they last better, depending on your foot size I suppose
