Things that are not fit for purpose

I am finding this increasingly of late, and it's driving me nuts. Is there no product testing any more?

I ordered Tippex with my weekly shop, and they sent me an alternative that looks like a pen. You're meant to squeeze the pen for the tippex to come out. Husbands grip is strong and it works for him. No matter how hard I squeeze, I'm unable to get any liquid to come out. So who is that made for? Just men?

Packets of ham/bacon, where it says "Peel here". Nope, the plastic just rips randomly, so you have to cut the whole thing off.

Milk cartons when you pour, the milk goes everywhere because the spout doesn't work.

Writing on things that is the same colour as the item, so you can't read it. See also, best before dates on eggs - can't read as it's always smeared.

Shredders that get paper jams within minutes.

Public loos - often the bolt doesn't align with the "bolt holder" (?) so you can't lock the door.

Train loos - no water in the taps.

Dog harnesses that dogs can back out of.

Aargh..........

Cook at home poppadoms. If you leave them under the grill for more than 2 minutes they catch fire. If you're pissed and forget about them for 15 minutes, you will find that all of your cooker knobs have melted off. Yes, that was me, circa 1995.
I had no clue there were ones you can do in the grill!

These microwave ones are brilliant.nice and crunchy after one min in the microwave

Top fix toilet seats. Never had one yet that stays fixed.
Is there a different way to fix them? So they aren't wobbly? I didn't know this!!
riverpebbles · 15/04/2022 12:03

Various types of gravy granules that don't dissolve properly in boiling water. Literally their only job.

Either deep fry or microwave.

Pre placed spy holes in door, I'm 5 ft 0, I can't see through even on my toes, taller people can bend down.

Everything designed on the assumption everyone is right handed.

Yes.

I'm right handed but due to arthritis sometimes use my left hand.

There are a few left handers in my family though so I know you can open wine left handed if you move the bottle and hold the corkscrew still, I know how to pick out a tin opening that will work left handed and when my mum was still alive I set my parents computer up with a mouse on each side.

Thehonestybox · 15/04/2022 12:13

Laptops. I'm seeing ones being sold for £800 that say "fine if all you do is check emails"...why have they become so much less powerful

BowerOfBramble · 15/04/2022 12:17

@madroid

Metal dish drainers that go rusty with the water from the dishes - what genius thought of rustable metal for something that is exposed to water by definition?
This is such a good point.
Happenchance · 15/04/2022 13:05

Those automatic hand wash stations that have appeared in supermarkets, public toilets and trains. It's never clear where the soap is going to come from, and if you miss it (which I invariably do), you have to wait for the water, then drier, to stop before trying again. There must be so many people in supermarkets and trains with unwashed hands because of them Envy.

The Tesco mobile phone top-up service. It hasn't worked for me for months.

Pockets in women's clothes.

Tin openers.

Safety boot laces. They can't withstand the friction from being pulled through the eyelets.

House plants from supermarkets. They always need repotting straight away.

Zoos. The conservative work that they do is minimal in comparison to the suffering that they cause to the animals that they exhibit, and the animals (e.g. chicks and rabbits) that are farmed in horrendous conditions to feed them as cheaply as possible.

Animal welfare laws in the UK, and probably in every other country.

Recycling infrastructures in the UK and other countries. There's so much Western waste being dumped on third world countries.

Climate change solutions, e.g. electric vehicles and wind turbines, that rely on finite materials and are going to be used as an excuse to start deep sea mining, which will fuck up the planet even more.

kimfox · 15/04/2022 13:18

CAMHS / SVEDS / UK healthcare system / the government / our local council / UK EV charging "network".

Oh, whoops, was this lighthearted?

In that case I will go with so-called "spreadable butter" that still rips the bread even when it's been out of the fridge for five minutes.

CircusBaby · 15/04/2022 13:22

Paper straws. Sorry, I know it's supposed to save the planet, but liquid makes paper soggy, that's just a fact. And even if it doesn't have some kind of coating on, it's pretty naff at stopping the straw from going all weird and bendy.

CircusBaby · 15/04/2022 13:23

*does not doesn't Hmm

Online recipes. Eighteen billion paragraphs about their nan, a holiday they once had, their pet squirrel, a meander off into something about bicycles...just give me the bloody recipe.

If there's no 'jump to recipe' button I just close the damn thing.

Ahahahaha I totally get this!

Human teeth
Totally agree!Grin

The film on ready meals. The very outside edge peels off in a perfect square leaving the rest covering the food completely intact

Yes, another one of my pet hates! Does no one test these?

I found that if you peel a corner back on each end instead of poking holes in the film before heating, you can get hold of the corner and peel it off intact.
Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/04/2022 14:00

Those clear bin bags for office wastebaskets. Work of the devil.

September29th · 15/04/2022 14:01

Cheese with re-sealable packaging like a ziplock but without the tag. The packaging says 'tear' along the top, and when you tear it rips at an angle and tears the pack, and if you cut it off it is impossible to prise the seal open once closed.

The new cling film, yes it is rubbish, you need to handle it with great care as it doesn't tear properly.

A580Hojas · 15/04/2022 14:03

Like pp, I've often wondered how we've been able to split the atom, de-code DNA, explore space yada yada, but no one seems capable of designing a toilet seat that reliably stays put for years.

Greatoutdoors · 15/04/2022 14:05

The slots on my old toaster were too small so you got an untoasted bit at the top of the slice. It went in the bin.

Squiff70 · 15/04/2022 14:05

Spreadable butter, my backside! If you keep it in the fridge it's still like concrete!

September29th · 15/04/2022 14:08

@Furrbabymama87

Fray Bentos pies. None of my tin openers can open them. And corned beef tins. In fact all tins should have ring pulls in this day and age.
Fray Bentos pies, I agree for the same reason, but also because they only contain gravy and no meat.

Will add ring pull tins because they frequently do not pull off and I am left with a can that will only open half way.

And for another reason, you need a gadget to open an easy open tin unless you have strong hands/nails or a knife you don't mind spoiling, or a screwdriver for prising the ring up.

Ah, you want the Warburtons toaster. It’s bigger.

This might help, in case you've not seen it already.

@GeneLovesJezebel

I ordered tin foil from Tesco, you know - the stuff that you use to roast/bake. I had two rolls of what I thought was a cheap replacement , no problem, I accepted it. When I came to use it I found that it’s ‘wrapping foil’ so can only be used to wrap cold food, can’t be used in the oven. What’s the point in that ? Two rolls of the stuff that I can only use to wrap cheese and sandwiches 😡
I use the wrapping foil in the oven, it is OK for covering things but does leak if you use it to wrap and cook or as a liner for a tray. Still use proper foil if I have it though.
Happenchance · 15/04/2022 14:16

Soft close toilet seats. They close so slowly and I like to close the lid before I flush.

Automatic flushes. They're such a waste of water if they're triggered by your arse being lowered onto the seat Grin.

iklboo · 15/04/2022 14:22

@September29th - that's a good tip, but I mean the ones you have to take the film off before you cook it (usually oven ones). Rage inducing.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 15/04/2022 14:25

Many petrol pumps. You have to squeeze the handle in a certain way, not too hard or it clicks off, not too gently or nothing comes out. I find it so annoying.
