Boris has been fined - Tory voters, should he go?

NewYorker80 · 12/04/2022 13:43

Both Johnson and Sunak have received fines for the lockdown parties. No further details as yet.

Do any Conservative voters here think Boris should resign?

I hope he stays. I don't like Sunak and Truss not ready yet. Can't think of who else would be leader.

TooBigForMyBoots · 12/04/2022 19:42

The lockdown laws were ludicrous and cruel. It's no skin off my nose if BJ stays or goes but the idea that a gathering with a piece of cake brings down a PM is appalling to me. It makes our country look ridiculous.

Our lying, lawbreaking, no longer trusted on the international stage Prime minister is making our country look ridiculous.

BlueEyesWhiteDragon · 12/04/2022 19:43

@cakeorwine

The Conservatives lost North Shropshire last year.

I can imagine there are going to be 'quiet Conservative voters' who are going to make their voice heard in local elections. Who knows what will happen in any General Election. No slogan about Brexit to hide behind this time

I hope they do tbh. Local elections are often viewed as a bit of a hint of what would happen in a GE and if they see losses there that clearly can't be written off as a one off (which was partly expected last year) then Boris will be jettisoned faster than fast.

Remember Allegra Stratton?

She resigned after the video of the press conference was leaked.

Integrity matters

kathleen567 · 12/04/2022 19:44

Tory voter. He absolutely should go now. How can anyone take him seriously after all the lies he’s told

DowningStreetParty · 12/04/2022 19:47

He should, but he won't.
It actually really saddens me that they won't resign over this. All integrity has gone out of British politics, we are not that country anymore and Boris Johnson holds the greatest responsibility for that.

I agree KenDodd in terms of Parliamentary politics losing integrity, but I think out in the constituencies people really do care about fairness. Tory MPs will be putting themselves out of a job at the next general election by holding on to Boris johnson as leader. Boris will never sack himself, he doesn’t have the personal honour to do it. The party should make the decision for him and then they’d have the moral high ground next time we all get a chance to vote.

Livelovebehappy · 12/04/2022 19:49

I think he’s probably lucky in that at the moment people have bigger things to worry about - cost of living rises, potentially escalation of war, still covid around, so that in a lot of people’s minds, party-gate is small fry in the grand scheme of things.

Johnson has done far worse. But eating a piece of cake and meeting colleagues he works with week in week out is heinous? I can't get my head round it.
itsgettingweird · 12/04/2022 19:51

@theDudesmummy

Michael Fucking Fabricant's take:

"I don't think at any time he thought he was breaking the law... he thought just like many teachers and nurses who after a very long shift would go back to the staff room and have a quiet drink".

!!!!!!!!!!

What teachers?

Our staff room was shut and we had to eat in classrooms in our bubbles. The DFE advised it.

Wish I'd known we didn't actually have to follow the law let alone guidance for the whole time we worked through this!

Jakadaal · 12/04/2022 19:51

100% but he won't - too flipping arrogant

DuncinToffee · 12/04/2022 19:52

Tory MP's are lining up now to pat him on the back for apologising and paying his fine.
Is he a big toddler?

NETSRIK · 12/04/2022 19:53

Just a little reminder to any still not grasping basic common sense- IT'S NOT ABOUT THE FUCKING CAKE!!!!!!

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2022 19:53

@JaniieJones

'Starmer was investigated by the police and there were no fines. Boris was investigated by the police and there were.'

Yes we know that. The point is they were doing the exact same thing (indoor mixing wasn't allowed when Starmer did it either except at work which they both were) that is why these FPNs are a bit silly. I'm embarrassed for the Met.

Blackford wants BJ to go. Well what a surprise! 🥱.

But they weren't even the same.

One was a party where people from different departments, the PMs wife and personal employee (the decorator) all mixed together to celebrate a birthday.

The other was a group of people who were working together in a campaign having dinner together.

It's really not difficult to comprehend if you weren't so intent on trying g to compare apples and oranges.

theDudesmummy · 12/04/2022 19:54

There's another thread now about the Fabricant tweet, plenty of outraged teachers and nurses there. This is such a disgrace. But they are Tories. Not surprised anymore.

Peregrina · 12/04/2022 19:55

The lockdown laws were ludicrous and cruel.

Yes, they were but it behoves the law makers to obey the laws they make. Other people who didn't make the laws may well take a stand against them and take the consequences. A recent example - the four people had up for chucking Colston's statue in the harbour. They went to court, the jury acquitted them - but it could have gone the other way and a fine or prison sentence come their way.

It now makes me think - I am normally a law abiding person, but what laws should I regard as optional because I find them inconvenient?

cakeorwine · 12/04/2022 19:56

Johnson has done far worse. But eating a piece of cake and meeting colleagues he works with week in week out is heinous? I can't get my head round it

It's more than that - I wonder how many people were at the party? Who thought it was a good idea - in the middle of a pandemic - to hold this event? To bring cake, to have people there....

We had covid guidance at work. Who could come in. How we could meet each other. Staying apart. I can't understand how no one realised that this looked bad - and if it came out, then people would get upset.

People who made sacrifices. We all know the stories people have during lockdown. Who they couldn't see.

DowningStreetParty · 12/04/2022 19:56

It’s especially in times of crisis that we all need decent people to be running things. Johnson is the opposite of decent. He’s famously got no morals. How can we trust him to do the right thing on anything? He can’t be trusted to keep to his own rules. His job isn’t a game. It’s not about Boris fulfilling his PM fantasies.

We’ve got Ukraine and Russia, a cost of living emergency, climate change emergency, Brexit, COVID, plus all the other issues compounded by Tory austerity since 2010. We desperately need trustworthy, intelligent adults in charge.

Tiddlesthecat · 12/04/2022 19:59

I'm not a Tory voter, but not aligned to any party. However, were it not for the current situation with Russia, I would say yes, he absolutely should go. However right now I think that the focus should be on Russia with minimum disruption, at least for now.

cakeorwine · 12/04/2022 20:00

I wonder if the Opposition will use this to get a vote in Parliament on misleading Parliament. I know that the Opposition occasionally get their chance to put things to a vote.

Then you could have the sight of Tory MPs saying he didn't mislead Parliament or abstaining.

None of which is a good look.

cakeorwine · 12/04/2022 20:01

I wonder what Sunak will do?

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2022 20:02

i think i will stop banging my head against this wall as no-one seems to be able to explain why meeting up indoors with a load of people and drinking wasnt a criminal offence but doing it outside was. I know it was investigated.....i am actually not that stupid*

Plenty if people have explained over and over.

2020 - no indoor mixing and socialising.

2021 the rules were different.

Boris had a meeting inside as well as outside of people from different departments as a social gathering (email says this), a birthday party with his wife and designer (so not work) and I've just learnt today a goodbye Cummings Abba do as well.

The issue isn't that people aren't explaining. The issue is you don't want to see the difference and have Boris held account for breaking the law and lying as the PM.

My first post was about being here for the fun of whataboutery.

I've not been disappointed Grin

Roussette · 12/04/2022 20:03

derxa do you realise this is just the start?
You say, oh so what he ate cake
There's another SIX parties he is known to have attended

Workplace gatherings.

That's what it's about.

Sky is keeping a spreadsheet on which MPs are coming out in support

Grant Shapps makes it 11 on the spreadsheet of cabinet support (now upgraded with fancy Sky News branding). Plenty still to go.

The wait goes on for a response from Rishi Sunak. It's been 6 hours...
