Money saving expert thinks civil unrest is coming

446 replies

ivykaty44 · 10/04/2022 19:13

There was a thread on mumsnet recently about civil unrest, views seemed to be it wouldn’t happen, the British don’t protest

Martin Lewis thinks hungry cold people will protest

I think he could be correct, what have people unable to afford heat and food got to lose?

@SucculentChalice

Woodhill Statistically, we have too many indigenous members of society who are net negative contributors to society. Eu migrants skilled and unskilled happen to be net positive.

There do seem to be quite a lot of lazy people around - I really struggle to get contractors to do all types of work for the going rate as a lot of them can't be bothered if its not a bigger job or one they are over-charging for. Local businesses report problems with staff not turning up etc..

But OTOH can you blame people if theres nothing to work towards and salaries are low? People in the UK have grown up with the cushion of benefits and the NHS and being told that being aspirational is "snooty" and everyone is the same. The personal tax allowance is so unusually high in this country that many lower paid people pay no tax at all, which isn't the case in other European countries. Not paying tax disenfranchises people.

Yes I can see that and some people don't have a very good work ethic but the wages are seriously rubbish especially the public sector

Often the EU migrants live in awful conditions here and don't have the same outgoings and perhaps are in 2 camps as they can use the money to go further in their country of origin at the same time so it's not always that simple

I think this is the case with Rishi's wife but that's another story

VelvetChairGirl · 11/04/2022 11:57

Is Jacob Rees Mogg landed gentry or “new money”

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Rees-Mogg

I'd say his family from what I can see have always been on the upper side of posh, weather they were landed or not I am not sure but these people often bounce around from one generation to the next still within the top bracket.

to me new money is the self made man/woman, JK for example, a footballer thats hit big, a actor thats become a hollywood star from a normal beginning like Vin Diesel I think he was a night club bouncer. new new, not passed down at all, no leg ups in childhood/youth.

desiringonlychild2022 · 11/04/2022 11:59

since when is being aspirational snooty? in what circles. And what benefits? You would starve to death on benefits. And as for NHS, good for emergencies and cancer treatment perhaps but I am so grateful for my private health insurance (courtesy of my employer) as it enabled me to see a GP and get my prescription. Immigrants (I am one) are net contributors because they tend to be younger and require less medical treatment. People who tend to move to other countries tend to be more enterprising, ambitious and in good health unless they are refugees (and even the refugees tend to be the richer half with the resources to get out of a life/death situation).

midsomermurderess · 11/04/2022 12:03

This is an interesting read on Rees-Mogg's roots www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jan/22/jacob-rees-mogg-roots-conservative-mp

midsomermurderess · 11/04/2022 12:05

And I remember hearing Matthew Paris on something, waspishly noting that really posh people 'never hyphenate'.

@RomansTheyGoTheHouse

Thing is how did we get here? In 2022? In a wealthy country?

I think we got here because we have long assumed the rights and freedoms that were fought for, and won, were permanent and could not be taken away. i.e. that a country can only progress and not degress.

This is not true and I have been worried for the last 5+ years that we (the West) are seeing the end of democracy and the rise of facism once more. But we've not been awake to it.

Now, I don't have a crystal ball and have no idea if people will riot, if fate will twist back in favour of democracy or if things will continue to get worse. But I do strongly believe, now, that our rights should never, ever be taken for granted or assumed to be permanent. I am now genuinely of the opion that the world remains full of people who would take them away for their own benefit and who do not give a shiny shit how much pain they cause others.

I also think it's time this country, specifically, ended it's subservient relationship with class. Too many of our PMs come from Eton and have never live the kinds of lives most people lead. And our Royal Family is the cherry on that particular cake and should go. Not least because the Andrew/Epstein and Charles/Savile businesses show how it nutures people with shocking judgement and then places them in positions of massive influence.

Well said.
SenoraMiasma · 11/04/2022 13:31

I think that regardless of the big things that seem to get our attention (Amazon/tax/Sunak, etc) we would do well to focus on the quality of service we get for every day things.

I have just spent twenty minutes on hold to HMRC at a charge of £4 to my phone.

These are the ways that money disappears - the last twenty or so years has seen such a huge shift from the corporate/institution in to to the individual so some people cannot breathe with the weight of everything on them. We do all the form filling online now when once that was someone’s job so a certain fatigue sets in after a while.

It’s this shift that is noticeable to me - I would really support a campaign that looked at putting some of the responsibility for this back on the sectors who generate it for example - no charge whilst you are on hold or the company is charged- free numbers for popular lines, etc.

Unfortunately I think the people who get listened to because they cause trouble otherwise are now quite well insulated from the problems.

great post @RomansTheyGoTheHouse

Ambermonkey · 11/04/2022 18:00

@Narcoanonymoose

Nah. Johnson's got his Falklands moment so all the flag shaggers won't mind even if they can't afford to eat or heat their homes. Middle class feminists are too caught up in trans self ID, can't vote labour, Johnson is their new saviour. Why rock the boat ? Everyone else - more interested in Love Island, etc , but Jeremy corbyn lefty unions blah blah...
Middle class feminists are too caught up in ‘trans self ID’??

Hear me out here, but what if (with a little bit of extra concentration with our tiny little minds) we’re allowed to care about more than one thing at a time. Radical I know, but I think I might just be able to manage it 🙄

Carpedimum · 11/04/2022 18:09

How old (& deluded) are the people who are saying civil unrest doesn’t happen here?!
We are at the cusp of an extreme change in society, anyone who doesn’t realise what is happening needs to do some research.

jade9390 · 11/04/2022 18:12

Martin Lewis creates panic to keep himself in the headlines. Look how he managed to crash energy websites. It might happen next winter. I wish it was directed at the energy companies rather than the government. They can afford to make less profit.

2bazookas · 11/04/2022 18:27

@colosmbo

I saw this but it's not really the English way.
Seems you don't know much British OR English history. It's littered with protests, marches, strikes, and petitions.

The peasant revolution of 1913 was very interesting, they didn’t even have internet to organise.

@woodhill That’s charming, you begrudge the lack of tax paid by minimum wage earners such as care workers, that’s just lovely.

Mfsf · 11/04/2022 18:32

Honestly , I hope so . I hate how most of the U.K. population just accepts things and suffers without fighting back . It’s time people open their eyes .

Yes, it’s like Stockholm syndrome or low self esteem, why so docile and submissive? Trained well, it seems like ☹️
DoorWasAJar · 11/04/2022 18:36

@Ambermonkey What a wacky concept 😃

Top tips on saving the pennies if you make £2k a
month only spend £500 go to food banks go
charity shops for clothes seek voucher deals. Turn your gas off only use electric. You will see
£17k in your bank year one. If you rent try to
move up north much cheaper

This isn’t realistic though. You need a referral to food banks and worse you are taking it from someone who needs it more than you.

It’s difficult to live on 500pm with teens

Some of us already live up north.

This, exactly. These companies are making profit, they should be targeted. They still earn their profits while people will actually die of the cold this winter.

Food bank in my area is desperately short of donations. Reckons those that once gave are now needing to use the facility. It’s a sad, sad situation
