Money saving expert thinks civil unrest is coming

ivykaty44 · 10/04/2022 19:13

There was a thread on mumsnet recently about civil unrest, views seemed to be it wouldn’t happen, the British don’t protest

Martin Lewis thinks hungry cold people will protest

I think he could be correct, what have people unable to afford heat and food got to lose?

@GellerYeller

One of the supermarket bosses was asked about losing customers to competitors like Aldi and he replied he was losing customers to food banks.
It's a nice soundbite and very sad, but surely someone's still buying the food from supermarkets so it's not lost custom.
Babyroobs · 10/04/2022 19:51

Silverclocks - Yes people are still buying from supermarkets and those who can afford it are buying more to put in the food bank donations trolley !

midsomermurderess · 10/04/2022 19:51

As David Simon (The Wire) said a decade ago, eventually, someone is going to pick up a brick. Eventually.

ohfourfoxache · 10/04/2022 19:52

I hope it’s coming

People are literally dying already and it’s going to get worse

Something has to happen. It just has to

MyCommentWasDeleted · 10/04/2022 19:52

The public were pissed off because of partygate, Boris was going to resign. The public forgot and moved on. Cost of living is up but has been going up for as long as I can remember, people just accept it.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 10/04/2022 19:52

@StopStartStop

If we have a run of hot weather - three weeks or so - there will be riots until the weather breaks and we have rain. Happens every time.
I said this on the last thread. Totally agree.

Yes, I don't dispute it's happening, but it was a stupid thing for the boss to say, as he hasn't lost any custom.

Not like this it hasn't. We've been used to very low inflation in this country for decades.
MoonminMummy9 · 10/04/2022 19:55

Crime will increase- fraud, theft

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/04/2022 19:56

I think he's right. The UK is in a state, confidence in public institutions is in the toilet and things will get worse and more expensive as this year progresses.

Soubriquet · 10/04/2022 19:56

Cold hungry people don’t tend to have the energy to protest either

They will try to savour what little warmth and food they have for when they need it. Not going out protesting.

Even though it’s badly needed

Narcoanonymoose · 10/04/2022 19:57

Nah. Johnson's got his Falklands moment so all the flag shaggers won't mind even if they can't afford to eat or heat their homes.
Middle class feminists are too caught up in trans self ID, can't vote labour, Johnson is their new saviour. Why rock the boat ?
Everyone else - more interested in Love Island, etc , but Jeremy corbyn lefty unions blah blah...

lightand · 10/04/2022 19:58

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

The unions have their hands tied, they can only do so much.

I think there will be riots. I remember the riots in the early 80’s and the Poll Tax riots. People who say it won’t happen maybe don’t know the history of the U.K.

I dont know much about unions nowadays. How do they have their hands tied please?
Justanotherlurker · 10/04/2022 19:58

There won't be riots because most people understand it is a world wide issue and not specific to the current gov, there was a lot of column inches around how lockdowns would cost us.

As is evident on this thread, the people hijacking the riots will be just the anyone but tory crowd without actually offering any practical solutions to a world wide issue.

Sbbhnfc · 10/04/2022 19:58

Yes. Why do you think Patel and her mates have been trying to get the Police Bill through? Why do you think the nudge unit and others have been practising psyops and mass obedience on us since at least 9/11? (not that it was called that then). The pandemic was just the dress rehearsal...as others have said, if this were France the riots would have happened long ago.

Generally if you look at history though riots start when basic staple foods get unaffordable and when the middle classes start being affected. (Mostly the genuinely poor are just too busy fighting to stay alive.)

We're almost there. And while I have every sympathy for the horrific scenes unfolding in Ukraine (one of the world's biggest exporters of wheat and sunflower oil) I really do wonder what Chamberlain, sorry Johnson, is really doing there and whether the Tory puppetmaster in the Kremlin issued some kind of edict. Or whether more than a bit of techno green screen smoke and mirrors has been applied. Wandering about the capital of Ukraine in a business suit? No flak jacket, helmet, just tor starters? Something literally isn't right with that picture. His devoted followers will continue to lap it all up though. All he was missing was the fat cigar....

That may sound a bit cynical and verging on conspiracy theory but BJ and his money worshipping chums long since sold what was left of their tattered souls to the devil...I'm just wondering at what point they're all going to start "disappearing" and heading off to their bunkers in New Zealand and the like...!

Buckle up - it's all about to get REALLY interesting.

SScoobiedoo · 10/04/2022 19:58

People are dismissing it but it's April and heading into summer, won't be so positive when it's October heading into winter and people are cold and hungry.

colosmbo · 10/04/2022 19:59

There is a lot of inequality though hence why lots of people are off on holidays & house prices are climbing. My home is sold to a cash buyer buying it for her dc, third one on the street to go like this in the last year. Wages are stagnant in some areas but some bankers have seen record bonuses. I know some friends getting 10/15% pay rises.

The 08 crisis didn't impact people equally & increased inequality. I expect this will be the same.

sophienelisse · 10/04/2022 20:00

Theft of gas and electricity will increase. Those who know how to re wire meter to the mains in the street will. Which will create more accidents and so on.

Fraud will increase.

People will do whatever means necessary to ensure their families can eat and remain warm.

House insurance claims will rise for lost items etc.

People will do what they have to and at that point I think civil unrest will happen.

As soon as we have one case of a person dying from the cold or malnutrition it will all kick off.

lightand · 10/04/2022 20:00

I think Martyn has his finger on the pulse.
So yes, I think it is.

It may not truly get going until Oct though.

MaryAndHerNet · 10/04/2022 20:01

"Even 10 years ago food banks were not needed as much?????"

From: 2009/10 ther were 40,898
In 2020/2021 there were 2,537,198

setting fires in the streets will keep them warm.

when I used to live in a rental with a communal boiler for the whole building that the tight arsed landlord only turned on in late november/early december and turned off in feb. I used to be out all the time hanging around shopping centres the cold drives you out and moving around warms you up, its often a case of better out then in.

colosmbo · 10/04/2022 20:02

doesn't this already happen?

dubyalass · 10/04/2022 20:02

I've got the telly on, and flicking through the channels I found 'Britain's Most Expensive Houses'. I didn't watch it, but it did strike me as totally tone deaf and vulgar. I'm fucking sick of having wealth and privilege shoved in my face, and I'm in a relatively stable financial position (for now). People are on the bones of their arses and it's only going to get worse - I feel like the rich are laughing at the rest of us plebs. "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche."

Narcoanonymoose · 10/04/2022 20:03

@Justanotherlurker I guess you are one of the 'never the fault of the tories despite 12 years to improve things' crowd Grin

And the October price cap hits as well.
