What can't you get in the shops?

I'm Yorkshire and DD Northampton, chatting with her yesterday and she hasn't been able to get Romaine lettuce for a couple of weeks now...my local corner Tesco and Sainsbury's have no white fusilli pasta and haven't done for the last week, the type of dog food my fussy one likes was not available for nearly a month. So I started to think and look. Yesterday between 4 shops there was one lettuce ...just one iceberg...I've photographed it to marvel at its rarity.

I also could not buy regular tomatoes, just on the vine, in any of the shops, or a single bottle of Guinness lots of multipacks but I only needed one.

What can't you get near you??

I live in Yorkshire - I got a really lovely romaine lettuce yesterday from Sainsbury's, also tomatoes. There don't seem to be any shortages at all, nothing that I've noticed, and I was in Tesco as well. Maybe it's just very localised?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/04/2022 11:43

Blackcurrant jelly powder. My mother and mil buy it and send it on... (South Yorkshire... have tried Asda, Morrisons, B&M and Lidl. They have all the other flavours... but DD likes this specific flavour in her school lunch.)

Tomatoes here (salad ones, cherry seem ok), I heard Tesco staff commenting on it too the other day.

But I know some areas of Spain have had the wettest weather for the time of year recently so it could just be that affecting ripening maybe?

PaulaTrilloe · 10/04/2022 11:45

Sunflower oil or in fact any veg oil. Loads of olive oil though

TempsPerdu · 10/04/2022 11:53

Salad/imported veg seem to be the main issues here (London) at the moment, although there are other random gaps in availability across the board. Supply chains are creaking in lots of areas.

We get all our fruit and veg from the local market, and know the traders there quite well. According to them it’s increasingly difficult for them to source what their customers want from New Covent Garden due to a combination of price rises, supply chain issues and the poor growing conditions in Spain. They also said that many Spanish lorry drivers are refusing to travel to the U.K. at the moment due to worries about getting stuck in the gridlock at Dover, especially over the forthcoming Easter weekend. They’ve advised us to arrive as early as possible to do our shopping over the next week as supplies are expected to be extremely limited until after the Easter break.

DesignMyRoom · 10/04/2022 12:08

Even the mcdonalds app mentions a shortage of tomatoes.

nearlyspringyay · 10/04/2022 12:12

Lettuce, cherry tomatoes and melon

CheekySwifter · 10/04/2022 12:12

I've been trying to find corn on the cob for 2 weeks in Aldi, Tesco and sainsburys.

TabbyMcTatBuskersCat · 10/04/2022 12:15

Recycled wood cat litter. Lemon curd. I'm East Yorkshire. Tbh it's Tesco's that seems to have the most gaps on its shelves, especially fruit/veg.

Autumn101 · 10/04/2022 12:19

Randomly sandwich bags, that section in my local Tesco has been empty for ages! Also very variable selection of crisps from one week to the next

TomRipley · 10/04/2022 12:20

Lemon curd and decent tomatoes.

Lemon curd is quite essential to me and I use about 4-6 jars a week, usually the own brand Tesco or sainsburys but they never have it.
The bon mamam is sometimes there but £2.60 a jar!

Crunchymum · 10/04/2022 12:21

Here is what was missing from my food delivery today

  • houmous ( apparently no sub available Shock)
  • glass cleaner
  • batteries (aaa - no sub available either!!)
  • non bio capsules (nothing was sent as a sub not even non bio washing powder or gel)
  • dental floss (yep.... apparently no type of dental floss available?)

I was quite surprised as all the missing items as in my mind there should have a fair amount of choice for substitute options? So essentially the Sainsburys my shopping was picked from had absolutely NO stock at all of houmous, small batteries, non bio detergent, glass cleaner or dental floss

We did get our lettuce and tomatoes though!!

BarbaraofSeville · 10/04/2022 12:22

I managed to get all the salad in Lidl yesterday, was quite surprised.

There might not have been Romaine lettuce, but there were many other types of lettuce and I don't think we're in a position anymore to be fussy about the type of lettuce we eat.

They didn't have any oil or tortilla chips though.

Every so often you see a post on here where someone innocently drops a comment that makes you go Shock

4-6 jars of lemon curd a week

Have you tried making it or ordering it by the bucket load?

BertieBotts · 10/04/2022 12:25

In Germany I haven't been able to buy neutral-tasting oil (sunflower, vegetable or rapeseed) or rice, or drink syrup (what we use in place of squash).

Nappies have been on and off stock wise and I need to replace my toothbrush head but haven't seen those anywhere either!

lunar1 · 10/04/2022 12:26

I went to Lidl on Friday. Couldn't get vegetable oil, the biscuits we normally buy, baking ingredients or catsan cat litter.

Maireas · 10/04/2022 12:27

Do you know, I don't think I've ever bought lemon curd!
I think I must be lucky living where I do, none of the above shortages seem to be the case here (although I haven't looked for lemon curd!)

Myahmoo1994 · 10/04/2022 12:27

Hi I wondered if anyone had any advice, last night the police were called to my property due to an argument between me and my partner, I have a 11 month old baby .. the police didn't arrest him or anything he just left the property but when they were speaking to me they found a large knife ( like a show knife) as my partner likes to collect them they didn't take anything any further they just sized the knife. This is the 3rd time since my son has been born than police have been called, I've never had social services ring me only my health visitor as she was informed by the police. What should I now expect to happen as I'm so worried. My son isn't in any danger whatsoever he is well looked after and very loved. Thankyoy for reading my post

Lightning020 · 10/04/2022 12:28

Not aware of any shortages.

Thursday37 · 10/04/2022 12:29

Cucumbers have been frequently out of stock here recently. Not 100% of the time, but quite often none at all in the shops. Toddler DD eats a lot of it so I buy one every few days usually.

Babyroobs · 10/04/2022 12:30

Our local Lidl has not had any strong plain white flour for a few weeks. I did manage to get some yesterday but it was the last two bags.

TomRipley · 10/04/2022 12:32

 @BarbaraofSeville Grin

Although I do love to eat lemon curd I wouldn't get through that much!

I'm a cake supplier and use lemon curd in a few of my recipes. I've thought about making my own but as it's made with eggs I'm a bit worried about the 'high risk' element that comes with it so prefer shop bought.

SniffMyQuiffyHair · 10/04/2022 12:32

No shortages of food here there is no diesel however

GettingStuffed · 10/04/2022 12:32

Ultimately in Wetherspoons in Manchester, thank God they had cucumber though
