What can't you get in the shops?

Scissor · 10/04/2022 11:32

I'm Yorkshire and DD Northampton, chatting with her yesterday and she hasn't been able to get Romaine lettuce for a couple of weeks now...my local corner Tesco and Sainsbury's have no white fusilli pasta and haven't done for the last week, the type of dog food my fussy one likes was not available for nearly a month. So I started to think and look. Yesterday between 4 shops there was one lettuce ...just one iceberg...I've photographed it to marvel at its rarity.

I also could not buy regular tomatoes, just on the vine, in any of the shops, or a single bottle of Guinness lots of multipacks but I only needed one.

What can't you get near you??

Although I do love to eat lemon curd I wouldn't get through that much!

I'm a cake supplier and use lemon curd in a few of my recipes. I've thought about making my own but as it's made with eggs I'm a bit worried about the 'high risk' element that comes with it so prefer shop bought.

Makes sense! Now I'm going to start looking out for lemon curd....

DockOTheBay · 10/04/2022 12:33

I haven't noticed anything, but I don't buy lettuce or tomatoes so maybe they're in short supply and I just haven't noticed.

No Massive Salads at yours then?

You're brave admitting to that on here.

I'm in SW France and on Thursday there was virtually no pasta in my local supermarket. Just like the beginning of Covid. However, the 500g blocks of cheddar are back.

Crinkle77 · 10/04/2022 12:44

The veg selection in my local Morrisons was a disgrace but the standard was low even before covid. Most of the produce I wanted was British with the exception of cauliflower which may come from abroad this time of year. The few that were there were going brown. But no loose carrots, savoy that looked really manky, no loose baking potatoes and the pre packed ones were reduced and starting to go yellow. I used to in the fruit and veg trade and we would have removed those manky items from the shelves but I guess they didn't want to have all bare shelves.

LaNozzeDiFigaro · 10/04/2022 12:46

I'm in Northampton too. Considerably less posh than your DD as I have not been affected by the great romaine lettuce shortage of 2022.

To be honest, the only thing I've noticed is diesel.

Dancer47 · 10/04/2022 12:47

NE England. No tomatoes or lettuce (strike in Spain I believe)
Shortage of bread products at supermarket every time I go so am giving up and going to start making my own. The main thing I am noticing is the prices - in 14 days Dolmio from 99p to £1.99p. Mayonnaise from 1.10 to 1.99 and Lurpak spreadable has risen from under £5 to £5.75 for the pack I normally get.
These price rises are unsustainable.

@Myahmoo1994

Hi I wondered if anyone had any advice, last night the police were called to my property due to an argument between me and my partner, I have a 11 month old baby .. the police didn't arrest him or anything he just left the property but when they were speaking to me they found a large knife ( like a show knife) as my partner likes to collect them they didn't take anything any further they just sized the knife. This is the 3rd time since my son has been born than police have been called, I've never had social services ring me only my health visitor as she was informed by the police. What should I now expect to happen as I'm so worried. My son isn't in any danger whatsoever he is well looked after and very loved. Thankyoy for reading my post

@Myahmoo1994

I think you need to start a new thread.

devildeepbluesea · 10/04/2022 12:53

No oil in Lidl yesterday- cooking oil I mean. Plenty of olive oil. Also no cherry tomatoes but plenty of other types. No issues with anything else. South Wales.

ShinyPikachu · 10/04/2022 12:54

Large multipacks of Quavers. I can get 6 packs but none of the bigger ones that they normally have on offer. There's not even a space for them on the shelf now, just loads of big multipacks of Wotsits which I assume they've filled the Quavers space with so there isn't a gap.

Qwaszx · 10/04/2022 13:06

I lucked out on tomatoes, spinach, pasta and cooking oil this week.

Paperyfish · 10/04/2022 13:12

Took the kids for a McDonald’s in Edinburgh and they had posters up explaining the big tasty would have one slice of tomato instead of two because of shortages. Luckily my two would never consider consuming a tomato- even a McDonald’s one- and happily ate their fish Fingers and chips! 🤣

andysgirl22 · 10/04/2022 13:23

I don't know why but the McDonalds tomato rationing has made me giggle. I'm glad they have taken such a fair approach haha!!
I am down in the rainy windy old south west and i must be honest haven't seen tomatoes!! Lettuce is definately about though and in fact two different places have given me some from a surplus for free this week. Lucky me. If anyone is interested in potential trading or collaboration to create the mumsnet massive salad let me know haha. Lots of carrots and onions also. Hehe

Horcruxe · 10/04/2022 13:45

Not too bad here, a d not been to the supermarket for a while.

But did notice there weren't any normal tomatoes. They had cherry tomatoes and had organic on the vine tomatoes, but no normal sized, cheaper variety.

**she hasn't been able to get Romaine lettuce for a couple of weeks now~

In the Home Counties and I managed to get some in Tesco last week, but it's not been in stock for weeks. Not much other lettuce either.
The ones I managed to get were labelled 'Produce of SPAIN'

VioletCharlotte · 10/04/2022 14:12

I've just been to Asda and I got everything I needed with no problem. I did notice sunflower oil has shot up in price (unsurprisingly), but I don't use it so it wasn't an issue.

CarrotCakeMuffins · 10/04/2022 14:15

Tissues seem hard to get at the moment. Very limited options have been available for several weeks now.

Gilead · 10/04/2022 14:22

North East. Can’t get salad tomatoes but managed baby plum tomatoes. Everything else on my usual list, cucumber, lettuce, spring onions seem fine.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 10/04/2022 14:27

Golden syrup.

ImAvingOops · 10/04/2022 14:32

Waitrose own brand ketchup seems a bit sparse. And their own brand kitten food pouches. Morrisons are out of organic butter but there plenty in Waitrose. Otherwise all seems normal at the moment. Plenty of tomatoes and lettuce. Am in South Wales

ButtockUp · 10/04/2022 14:39

Ready Salted and Cheese and Onion crisps are often scarce here, (Kent) but tons of feckin' marmite flavour crisps.
The sandwich bag/tin foil/grease proof paper section seems to be lacking as are bin bags.

The freezers seem to have lots of gaps too.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 10/04/2022 14:54

M&S have been out of pickled red onions for a while. I’m just about getting by!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/04/2022 15:03

I also want to know about the lemon curd.
