Random things that were big in the '90s.

I'm trying to make up a quiz for a friend's birthday based on things that were popular in the '90s, plus I was just having fun reminiscing with another friend. So I wondered, what random and lesser known things do you remember being popular back then?

Riverdance is one I remember. That was so huge back then and I was obsessed with it and Michael Flatley. I remember watching Eurovision live when they had Michael Flatley and Jean Butler perform and being blown away by it.

I love this thread. Amazing nostalgia.

I had the popper trousers. It was very annoying when they were popped.

I had the stars and moon bedding. I still have it and put it on the DC beds now. We still use the throw that came with it daily.

To add to the thread:
Adidas 3 stripe trousers
Reebok Classics with the stripes in a range of colours
Wax Lyrical shop

Impulse body spray

Collectible Spice Girls photo packs from newsagent, like football stickers

@StanleyTheCrane

I can't do Magic Eye pics either. That reminds me of Scholastic book fairs. You used to get books of them at those.
Apparently you have to have perfect binocular vision to be able to see magic eye pictures. Not necessarily 20/20 but your eyes need to be working together symmetrically. I remember a website explaining all this and very kindly giving us a picture that those of us with a lazy eye could actually see. There’s also a good chance that those of you who couldn’t see magic eye pictures are also no-hopers at ball games. Perfect stereopsis is essential to hand-eye co-ordination.

Websites…that reminds me now, free internet! Freenet or something like that? Great when you could get on, but it crashed frequently. And dial up internet, the whirrs and squeaks and whistles when you were connecting. And not being able to ring your friends because they were online.
@DobbyTheHouseElk, I hear that pain. I'll let you off.

DD is singing 'Living on a Prayer' with her school choir at the moment. All kinds of wrong.

@Maybeitstimeforachange

'Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin', all cool
And shooting some b-ball outside of the school'
That’s so weird, my DC have to learn “livin on a prayer” as well. It’s so wrong listening to 9year old singing it. DC teacher is a woman in her 40’s trying to recapture her youth.

howdyhey · 09/04/2022 08:05

The Mpeople advert 'Search for the Hero' was for Peugeot... 'the drive of your life'. I remember there was a lot of controversy about it for some reason

Peter Andre 'mysterious girl'
The X Files
Snatch bedding.. it really mattered if you were team pink or team blue at our school!
Spectacular nail varnish/ my favourites were baby blues, blue lagoon and ballet slippers
The babysitters club books.. I still have mine!

musicalfrog · 09/04/2022 08:09

You had to have your own geocities website, otherwise you weren't doing the Internet properly.

winewolfhowls · 09/04/2022 08:16

X files
Kinder eggs collectables especially the terripins
Bath marbles from body shop which had a silky plastic covering that dissolved in water and bath stuff inside .

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/04/2022 08:28

I had blue snatch bedding. My DM chucked it out years ago because it was all “bobbly” I’m not sure. She looked a bit guilty.

I’d love to have it now. I went to a boarding school and it really mattered what duvet covers you had.

Princetopple · 09/04/2022 08:55

Roll on body glitter.

Girls magazines mizz and sugar.

That advert that went "I feel like chicken tonight" and the milk tray man?

Princetopple · 09/04/2022 08:56

Oh god yeah, those collectable spice girls photos from newsagents were huge at my school! We'd all be swapping photos with our albums out in the playground.

Seahawk80 · 09/04/2022 09:08

Oh wow this is bringing up so many memories! I was at school in the 90s and everyone was obsessed with body shop white musk and dewberry!
I think most things have been mentioned but I remember at one point oatmeal being THE colour to wear - oatmeal bodies and waistcoats if you wanted to be really on trend!
I randomly went to see Michael Flatley at the O2 as my friend had tickets through work. My main memory is the fans were insane! Two women had a stand up row as one accused the other of blocking her view!

Turtletotem · 09/04/2022 09:23

Turkey twizzlers?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 09/04/2022 09:28

Sweater shop t shirts.
Warner brothers t shirts (those two were basically my kids wardrobes)
Animaniacs
Bogle-ing

FieryPitOfMordor · 09/04/2022 09:32

@WellBrewedNoSugar

Bamboozle - the quiz on teletext Pound puppy teddies Reverse charge phone calls to your mum/dad when you needed picking up because you’d spent all your money so didn’t have change for the phone box
Oh, that reminds me - BT Chargecards to call home from a phone box before mobile phones (and I think you could get pre-paid phone cards as well)
namechangeanonymous · 09/04/2022 09:42

Chatting to my 'mates' on Lycos chatroom, before it was wildly known how many weirdos were on there, didn't let mum know she wouldn't have allowed it.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 09/04/2022 09:58

Two bits hanging down at the front of your hair. Also sometimes people bleached only these bits blonde

Oh shit this is a 90s thing. I've done this for years.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 09/04/2022 09:59

Hdhsyegdhdj · 09/04/2022 10:29
@Hdhsyegdhdj I had jeans with him on and a t shirt but reckon that was right end of 80's / just 90's
Suprised my mum let me wear them
I started secondary mid-90s and they definitely had a renaissance. Unless my part of the world was about 10 years behind the trends!!!
Laughing about your mum! I think the teachers were perplexed at first, and then grouped and decided to clamp down en masse 😁

Sweetnhappy1 · 09/04/2022 10:49

Sorry haven't RTFT

Yin Yang jewellery
Mood rings
Dog tags
Watches with really wide elastic straps, Tikkers?

Crabbyboot · 09/04/2022 10:58

Vianetta ice cream

GellerYeller · 09/04/2022 11:12

Mac Spice lip liner with paler nude lipstick. Or in my case the Body Shop Beech lip liner because department store makeup seemed unbelievably lavish and prohibitively expensive.
Ditto Chanel Rouge Noir nail polish!

AlphaAlpha · 09/04/2022 11:33

@AncientofMuMu

Celestial bedrooms
I had this!!
StickyStickyStickStickSong · 09/04/2022 12:54

Drop dead Fred !!

Antarcticant · 09/04/2022 13:04

The book 'Wild Swans' - everyone was reading it, me included. I still have my 90s copy and re-read it occasionally.
