Thanks for new thread, still lurking.

Thank you for the new thread. I don't have anything useful to add, but I appreciate reading those who do.

Peace talks are not being mentioned much ATM but they were entirely a PR thing for Putin anyway. Given the sheer number of lies in the first place and then the considerable number of "agreed" humanitarian corridors to Mariupol which were never held to, its clear there is zero good faith in any talks.

Zelensky has to be seen to be trying but i think there is no hope for peace in the coming weeks. Perhaps after that.

Alexandra2001 · 07/04/2022 07:36

Funded by and influenced are different things

Russia didn't fund the tories out of the goodness of their heart, there is always a pay back

What actual policy has Boris put into action that's directly benefit Putin?

Lets start with Brexit, toxic relationship with the EU, destabilisation of NI, support for Trump, slashing defence spending (and still doing it), opposition to an EU army...

UK allowed billions to be washed through london on a scale way above other countries, Billionaire Russians given citizenship and why was that? money buys influence, we all know that.

I think I heard on the news last night that talks are continuing at a lower level and via video link. Not to say that much will be achieved through them though.

Talks were always a PR exercise for Putin, i said that from the outset - Putin didn't commit 200k troops just to pull them out with no or little gain.

I think this war will carry on for months, if not years.

It will only be bought to an end if Nato does far more.

www.theregister.com/2022/04/06/darpa_hypersonic_missile/

DARPA announced a second successful test of its hypersonic cruise missile, adding that the weapon, capable of speeds in excess of Mach 5, is ready for real-world use.

Funny that - we've gone from "US has no working hypersonic weapons" to "look out commie scum !" in less than 6 days. I hope that hasn't contradicted anything the Russians were telling their leader last week.

Also, is heliograph and morse still a thing ? I mean crude and limited, but hey wow ...

HappyWinter · 07/04/2022 09:03
@ClaudineClare unfortunately on this one I would again have to say that I stand very firmly behind this and would suggest you read into this further. Corbyn has been calling for Ukraine to be demilitarised for years and has been a regular contributor on Russian propaganda channels.

Are you aware that within the last week Corbyn spoke at a 'all sides (ie Russians and Ukrainians) are wrong' event, were pamphlets were handed out claiming the US was the aggressor, and where a Ukrainian who tried to speak and say they had been invaded was dragged out? Have you seen the video of Diane Abbott this week?

Did you closely follows Corbyn's actions during the Salisbury fiasco? Have you seen his numerous RT appearances? Or show he hosted Kremlin-linked figures for years? And the stance he took on previous Russian actions?

Calling Corbyn a Kremlin-sympathiser is not just something I would stand behind but if I were sued for libel I would go for a defence of actual fact rather than genuine opinion. Please read about this topic in detail.

www.jewishnews.co.uk/corbyns-stop-the-war-speech-interrupted-by-cries-of-shame-on-you/

and if you look on Twitter you can see clips as well as the papers handed out at that meeting.
That's bad and explains why he has been so useless as an opposition politician - this makes it look like his sympathies lie with Russia and not the UK (or Ukraine). I think they've been putting people in place on both sides of the political spectrum for their own gain. He was pro-Brexit as well, which was more unusual for the left.

Any idea why the US seem to be provoking China like this? It seems like a mad thing to do

@kufc

Is there any hope from the peace talks - is this the route to ending this war or are we still hopping for Putin to get taken out?

Does anyone know where Putin is living?

No hope of any peace until we get to early may now. Thats the next realistic point.

Where is Putin living atm? In East Berlin in 1970...

RedToothBrush · 07/04/2022 09:22

Max Seddon @maxseddon
The horrific news of massacres in towns like Bucha has effectively derailed peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, Erdogan's top advisor tells @laurapitel and @cornishft.

And Russia wants sanctions relief as part of any potential deal

In Turkey's strongest condemnation of the atrocities, Ibrahim Kalin said they "make it more difficult for the negotiations to continue as before . . . these are really horrible, completely unacceptable, inhumane actions and whoever has done that should be brought to justice."

Kalin says sanctions work: "They suffered a lot of losses there [in Ukraine], but the economic losses are beginning to have an impact on the overall economic situation and policy thinking."

Russia wants them lifted. "That’s the only way they will probably make concessions."

Until now, I have pretty much ignored Jeremy Corbyn, almost viewed him as a joke but if previous comments are correct he is in fact dangerous.
I am off down yet another rabbit hole to research JC.

Because you don't defeat bullies by giving into them ? Or to use the perfectly correct term "kow towing" ?

It's tiptoeing around bullies that got us here.

Personally, this is the best time for such a visit. It underscores that while the West took it's eye off the ball with Ukraine, it will be "shame on us" if we are fooled a second time.

I suspect a similar thing happened with the stop the war coalition as happened to other campaign groups originally set up for one purpose (e.g. to campaign against section 28). The original objectives are either achieved (section 28) or stop being relevant (Iraq invasion) - at which point rather than disbanding the group continues and eventually becomes completely disconnected from its original aims.

Seems a lot of energy to expend on someone who isn't going anywhere near power anytime soon.

Still that's energy that won't be directed at looking at what Boris and the boys (who, let's remind ourselves are in power) have got up to, are getting up to and (critically) are planning on getting away with up to.

thereisonlyoneofme · 07/04/2022 09:53

when this is all over how can the Ukraine people ever live side by side with the Russians. The reputed massacres etc show how close we are to barbarism. The soldiers carrying out these atrocities are probably
"normal "family men

TheABC · 07/04/2022 09:54

That's a cheering comment from the Turkish negotiator that Russia has noticed the sanctions. I was beginning to wonder if it would have an impact on the policy makers, given how insulated they are with their wealth.

Given how much of Russia's army is now in Ukraine, if I were part of the West's intelligence, I would be quietly helping some of the separatist regions to kick back. Make it as painful as possible for Russia to remain committed to the war.

It's what happened in Rwanda, people live amongst the people that killed their family. There's lots of heartbreaking Interviews of survivors talking about forgiving and or living beside the murders on youtube. Horrendous to think about really.

Fat Freddys Cat !!!!

Vague memories (and those that know will know why Grin) of friends scouring "Dark They Were And Golden Eyed" for US comic imports, DM also used to pop in (although she preferred "Forbidden Planet") for Star Trek novels and more obscure Sci-Fi tomes.
