Why are fish and chip portions so big?

If the price of fish and chips is going up couldn't they just start to make the portions smaller? One large cod and chips is enough to feed 3 of us for dinner round here!

£13.95 buys all this in my local chippy, and it's lovely too that would be more that double the price at my local chippy.

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/04/2022 19:58

Thats impressive for under £15!

No way would it be that cheap here!

UrsulaBursula · 05/04/2022 20:00

Who in their right mind eats leftover chips, the following day!?!

Chips go stale so fast, sometimes within a few minutes.

You sound very frugal by the sounds of it as a standard cod and chips would be enough for me to eat. I would be stuffed but I could eat it. Couldn’t imagine it being split between 3 😳

ParkheadParadise · 05/04/2022 20:01

I have noticed that everywhere has started including chips and you can't buy just fish on its own.

Fish Supper or
Single Fish

doeadeeer · 05/04/2022 20:01

You should all just be thankful it's not £13 for one fish and chips like my local! 2 portions of regular fish and chips and one mushy peas is almost £30.

I can't enjoy it as it's so extortionate so rarely eat it anymore.

OutingHobby · 05/04/2022 20:18

[quote Savingpeoplehuntingthings]@cheshirecat99 those prices are ridiculous!😂

Nice! Needs those wooden forks that are a pain to eat with though. Actually.. maybe that's why it seems so big.

Blimey that's curry price territory around here

@Savingpeoplehuntingthings that is good value
Its about £9 for fish and chips here and pies about £3

chesirecat99 · 05/04/2022 20:28

Wow @Savingpeoplehuntingthings!

All the chippies have been gentrified around here now, the kind of places where you can have your fish fried in batter, matzo meal or panko, grilled, steamed or pan fried in olive oil with oregano. The only old school fish and chip shop that hasn't gone all fancy schmancey and added monkfish, burrata and avocado salad to the menu alongside the deep fried mars bars or kitted out their staff in trendy 50s style uniforms still has a recommendation from Heston Blumenthal on the wall! Although I think he grew up nearby so I'm not sure that has much to do quality of the food...

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 05/04/2022 20:32

@ToothGrinder

Agree there are loads of chips. Fortunately I have a couple of wee ukraineies living with me now so on Monday we all shared a small portion between us. We were still full!

I get a bit emotional thinking about it really.

First time I've genuinely laughed at a post ever on here GrinGrinGrin

My local one is so far away from that Grin Pie, chips and gravy is a lunchtime offer Scampi is the most exotic thing on the menu
Notanotherwindow · 05/04/2022 21:20

Ask for a large roll eel. That'll feed you for a week. They're massive.

felulageller · 05/04/2022 21:26

Last one was £13 and not big at all.

Mrsjayy · 05/04/2022 21:45

Rolled eel (large ) no thank you Envy I imagine eels to be spiney !

mumda · 05/04/2022 21:49

Ordered a large and standard portion last week and couldn't tell the difference. Disappointing and expensive.

chesirecat99 · 05/04/2022 21:50

Now you'd be hard pushed to find pie, chips and gravy here, @MrOllivander Grin Deep fried oysters, jackfruit fritters and samphire but no pies nor saveloys. One of them does do a rare breed pork battered sausage though and the one with the funky fifties uniforms has all the "traditional" stuff extra stuff, including jellied eels. TBF the trend for matzo meal is more authentic than batter made with flour. They always offered it around here, it just wasn't on the menu, you had to ask.

LowlandLucky · 05/04/2022 22:00

In our closest chippy you get 2 pieces of cod in each fish supper, you could feed a family of 4 with it.

MrOllivander · 05/04/2022 22:00

Here's a taste of the menu @chesirecat99

Why are fish and chip portions so big?
cushioncovers · 05/04/2022 22:03

Our local chippy's portion is a good portion but I can eat the lot no sharing going on in this house. Grin

Notanotherwindow · 05/04/2022 22:04

Rock eel is nice. It's like river cobbler but battered and enormous with 1 thick bone down the centre. Literally takes up 3 quarters of the plate.

ClaudineClare · 05/04/2022 22:04

We get one cod and one small chips between two and it lasts us six days.

Day one: eat the batter off the fish and two chips each.

Day two: eat quarter of the fish and 5 chips each (I know! Gluttony!)

Day three: same as day two (more Gluttony!)

Day four: chip butties with LOTS of sauce to hide rankness of aged chips.

Day five: still too full to eat a thing so use the lemon that comes with the fish to make a refreshing hot water with lemon, which keeps us going until...

Day six: when we roast the empty chip bag and fish box for dinner.

yellowsuninthesky · 05/04/2022 22:06

When we get fish and chips we get 3 fish and one large chips between three of us.

I could eat more, but it would be piggy.

I've been to a couple of places which do smaller portions - however, they are all in Devon where there's a big elderly population so maybe they cater for their generally smaller appetites.

ParkheadParadise · 05/04/2022 22:24

@ClaudineClare
I think you should be able to make that last a WHOLE week.
7 days instead of 6
Day 2 & 3 you come across as greedy IMO
😂😂

Flatbrokefornow · 05/04/2022 22:35

Our local one is excellent, but utterly ludicrously large portion sizes. I order a ‘mini’ fish and chips, which is more than enough chips for both of us and a sausage for DD. It’s a pretty cheap takeaway and a local small business. Wish I could do it more often (although my waistline is grateful)

ChristinePerfect · 05/04/2022 22:41

@Twolostsoulsswimminginafishbow

I live in a coastal Yorkshire town. It has to be Haddock, cod are vile bottom-feeding beasts. Most friends wouldn’t eat cod either. We do share a large haddock between two. I don’t eat chips but half of that with mushy peas is perfect.
100%, it must be haddock.
