Why are fish and chip portions so big?

If the price of fish and chips is going up couldn't they just start to make the portions smaller? One large cod and chips is enough to feed 3 of us for dinner round here!

@Leftbutcameback

The local chippy near uni used to do a small fish and chips which I’d quite often pick up on the way home. It was perfect for me!

I do tend to eat most of the fish now, but freeze most of the chips and last time I got three extra meals out of the chips

How would you reheat the chips - bake on tray like packaged frozen oven chips ? I imagine microwave would result in very soggy ( though that might be appealing to some )
TheChild · 05/04/2022 18:40

Clearly I'm a greedy cow because I can polish off a jumbo battered sausage, chips, bap and curry sauce to boot.

And now I'm hungry.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 05/04/2022 18:41

Here come the teeny tinies!

"I had one chip and I'm full till next Tuesday, how do people eat like this??!!"

What a miser you are sharing a poke of a bag of chips between three people Hmm

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 05/04/2022 18:41

Oh come on!!! Freezing chips from the chippy? I’ve heard it all now.
Mythical mums net fish and chips now. We’ve had the chicken to feed the five thousand now the cod and chips to feed a family of 12.

Either you all live somewhere that serves massive portions or everyone I know is a pig. We don’t have chippy tea often but when we do it a regular cod and chips each. Well dh has haddock and chips.
Might have a few chips left over but nothing major and not another meal worthy.

Lovinglife45 · 05/04/2022 18:42

My local chip shop charge £9 for a large cod and chips. Four of us require one large and one small chips. Rather have too much than not enough. It is our cheap take away compared to spending £30 to £40 on Indian or Chinese food.

OutingHobby · 05/04/2022 18:43

What a miser you are sharing a poke of a bag of chips between three people hmm that's my point though. It's massive. They could make a small smaller and then they'd save money and the Large can be full on large. I'm all for a large portion being massive but the small one should be small and they'd save so much.

I'm only here for the competitive chip sniffers and the stock from the fish bones.

Hmmm I went to the chippie last week and had fish and chips. Got home and opening them and was shocked at the size of them.

I was thinking “Good god who eats that much in one go ? How is that possible ?”

15 minutes later I looked down at my plate and it was empty Blush

NameGoesHere · 05/04/2022 18:45

Four of us require 4 cod and chips… no large portions here… not even with the chips

Vanderpump · 05/04/2022 18:45

I could easily manage one , it definitely wouldn't feed three here

cannotfindanickname · 05/04/2022 18:45

They are huge near me. I always share with my teen.

marjayy · 05/04/2022 18:47

I can easily polish off large fish and chips with curry sauce. Then finish what DH leaves. Grin

AlwaysLatte · 05/04/2022 18:49

My son (14) loves the occasional fish and chips. We usually get a large cod each for him and my husband, and a medium cod each for youngest and me. But one large portion of chips does the whole family!

That is a point once I start it's like mmm just a couple more chips, just a couple more and then there are the crispy ones.

Freezing chippy chips is not a thing now is it? That sounds more like atonement than frugality - "I spent two and a half quid on this greasy, soggy mess so I will damn well eat it. In three sittings!"

Exactly what I was thinking!!

Who on earth freezes chippy chips and makes another meal from them?

One fish and chips does one meal for one person here.

DockOTheBay · 05/04/2022 18:52

Leftover next day chippy chips? 🤮
Grim if microwaved, but if you spread them out on baking paper and spray with oil or cooking spray, then cook in a hot oven for 15 mins or so they crisp right up. Basically the same as frozen chips.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 05/04/2022 18:54

People freeze chip shop chips?

Only on Mumsnet!

cantbecoping · 05/04/2022 18:54

Can’t cope with reheating chipper chips the next day! Have never heard of anyone doing that in my life!

MrOllivander · 05/04/2022 18:55

This is a small chips from my local (battered sausage, scraps and Irish curry sauce)
Costs about £3

Left over chips can also be reheated in a frying pan with a lid

This also works a treat with leftover pizza

I could go that now
ParkheadParadise · 05/04/2022 18:57

When we go to the chippy everyone gets a Supper.
I wouldn't think about buying a fish supper and sharing it with dh & dd 😂😂😂

Lovinglife45 · 05/04/2022 18:58

I would never eat chips the following day.

At most I will eat them a few hours after they have been purchased and placed in a baking tray in oven to retain crispness.
